Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Friday, September 16, 2022

This is how anti-immigration MAGA Republican governors are currently getting their kicks - giving vulnerable immigrants one-way tickets from their states to "liberal" cities in a game of political one-upmanship, without regard for the human cost. This isn't the first time this has happened, either. In the early 1960s, another group of white supremacists, relying on the same racism-and-spite blueprint, and peddling the same lies about housing and opportunity, bussed vulnerable people - Black Americans living in the Jim Crow-era South - across the Mason-Dixon line to get back at Northern liberals involved in the civil rights movement.

The Reverse Freedom Rides were a racist prank in the same mean-spirited, pitiless vein we're seeing from MAGA immigration hardliners. And while Gov. Abbott has boasted that his "unprecedented" bussing plan is doing "what no state has done in American history to secure our border," it's hard to believe he hasn't cribbed every note from those racist originators.

It's worth noting that Abbott has also previously promoted talking points from the Republican Party's version of the Great Replacement Theory, a racist and xenophobia-steeped conspiracy theory which holds that global elites (which is often meant to invoke "the Jews") are attempting to wipe out white Americans with Democrat-voting non-whites.

In 1961, the Freedom Rides saw interracial groups of activists travel to Southern cities by Greyhound buses to protest racial segregation in interstate travel, which had already been ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.

In response to the Freedom Rides, ... they came up with the Reverse Freedom Rides, a plan to transport thousands of Black folks - via bus, no less - from the South to the North. It was an effort conceived to remove "surplus" Black folks from the South for the collective sin of demanding full citizenship, to reveal the hypocrisy of white Northern liberalism, to redeem the South via both-sidesism, to embarrass Democratic politicians perceived to be complicit in the Black Civil Rights Movement, and to propagate a very Great Replacement-like theory that white Democrats were using Black folks for their votes.

And so it appears the playbook for racists, xenophobes, and white supremacists remains almost unchanged. From the banning of books to the refusal to acknowledge Black history - to, incredibly, the bussing of migrants - the cycles just repeat.

The past may not repeat itself, but as is the case here, it definitely rhymes. And for those who take umbrage at the insinuation that the arguably illegal trafficking of undocumented migrants (8 USC 1342 ii...) isn't being done with both malice and disregards towards those being lied to and transported, ask yourselves one simple question: Has the US dealt with undocumented European immigrants in the same ways we've now reverted to mistreating black and brown immigrants (or even citizens - as it relates to the 1960s)? Ever?

Wait,

So you are saying, it's humna trafficking to bus them to other places?

Isnt that what the Democrats were doing as well? Shipping them all over the country? Now it's a problem since we are shipping them to the door step of Democrats?

#9 | Posted by Alexandrite at 2022-09-15 08:10 PM | Reply

So you are saying, it's human trafficking to bus them to other places?

Are they "humans"? Are they being "trafficked" against their will?

Here's what the federal law I cited says about it:

Title 8, U.S.C. 1324(a) defines several distinct offenses related to aliens. Subsection 1324(a)(1)(i)-(v) prohibits alien smuggling, domestic transportation of unauthorized aliens, concealing or harboring unauthorized aliens, encouraging or inducing unauthorized aliens to enter the United States, and engaging in a conspiracy or aiding and abetting any of the preceding acts.

www.justice.gov

These people weren't being transported for any official US governmental immigration action nor were they turned over to local immigration authorities. They were shipped and released for unsuspecting local officials and organizations to deal with. Seems like that's precisely what Subsection 1324(a)ii specifically outlaws while also making it a conspiracy to aid in committing the act.

My brain is far from rotted. That would be your soul - should you be able to find one for people who walked over 2000 miles for months to escape the scourge of communism in Venezuela.

#10 | Posted by tonyroma at 2022-09-15 08:12 PM | Reply

To further cite the law:

Domestic Transporting -- Subsection 1324(a)(1)(A)(ii) makes it an offense for any person who -- knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that an alien has come to, entered, or remains in the United States in violation of law, transports, or moves or attempts to transport or move such alien within the United States by means of transportation or otherwise, in furtherance of such violation of law.

www.justice.gov

Isn't the point of moving these immigrants to "sanctuary" states/cities to draw attention to the federal government's inability to stop the flow of "illegals" crossing over into border states with Republican governors?

So, these governors know that these migrants aren't in this country legally, and then they transport these people across state lines into other states without informing anyone in those states of what they're doing?

Even if these actions aren't in prosecutable violation of the noted statutes, they certainly violate normal principles of simple human decency and the Christian command to take care of immigrants amongst you, not to lie to them and send them packing to be dropped off in parking lots and on street corners in cities they know nothing about nor have any connection to.

This thread is like a Dumb & Dumber competition with people trying to outdumb each other.

On one side we have the idiots who claim everything is about racism, with the implicit undertone that all racism is white racism. Never minding the fact that governors in Mexican states did and do the same thing with migrants. I've also seen this happen in other countries with internal vagrants and homeless people. Linking everything to white racism is just stupid and makes you look stupid.

On the other side we have the goobers who apparently don't care that these transports are obnoxiously violating federal laws, or are even cheering it on because think it's expothing the other thide's hypocwithy. I agree that the governors doing this are putting themselves and the transport companies they used in legal jeopardy based on the statute quoted earlier in this thread.

Tucker Carlson went on a racist rant Thursday night while celebrating what he called the "happy story" of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis sending two immigrant-filled planes to Martha's Vineyard this week.

"The Vineyard is going to need to construct shantytowns for all these new people," Carlson said. "But we can't call them 'shantytowns,' obviously that's demeaning. So we're going to call them 'townships' after Obama's favorite country, and then we're going to give them dignified names that suggests some kind of victory over adversity. Mandela, Cesar Chavezville, Kamalapolis."

Carlson also joked that the migrants should stay at the Martha's Vineyard property owned by Barack and Michelle Obama so they could have a "goat barbecue."

He says the authorities would disarm the island's residents so they can't resist the tidal wave of people. It is chapter and verse from white power tracts.

#19 | Posted by sentinel at 2022-09-16 10:46 AM | Reply

On one side we have the idiots who claim everything is about racism, with the implicit undertone that all racism is white racism.

Systemic racism (nee classism) is one-sided - it's wielded by those who have power and control over other people not of their class or race. In this case, white governors are using the power of the state given them by elections and legislatures to forcibly migrate asylum seekers with legal status to remote locations through coercion and lies. And what strawman is claiming "everything is about racism"? Can you name one single example of any state governor using coercive tactics to remove undocumented non-persons-of-color by furtively transporting them to other states? In the 1960s white city councils used coerced relocation of solely blacks as a reaction to northern Freedom Riders coming into the South trying to register blacks for voting. Anyone can be prejudiced, but only the empowered can practice systemic control or favoritism against others not having equal power or standing.

On the other side we have the goobers who apparently don't care that these transports are obnoxiously violating federal laws, or are even cheering it on because think it's exposing the other side's hypocrisy.

Now it appears that because these so far legal asylum seekers were specifically chosen for this particular Martha Vineyards' stunt, the federal law noted above may not be applicable, but DeSantis may have instead violated Florida state law that only gave him permission to spend government funds to remove undocumenteds from inside the state to outside locations.

In this case, both appear to be factually true based on the details of these specific actions.

Damn you're a moron and a complete gaslighting fool. You already know that transporting immigrants under US custody for official reasons is not the same as blindly shipping released asylum seekers and then dumping them onto the street in places not prepared for their arrival.

"This is completely consistent with the law and our responsibilities," said Jorge Silva, a deputy assistant secretary for public affairs at U.S. Health and Human Services, in a statement. "Our legal responsibility is to care for unaccompanied children while they are on our watch, and that includes connecting them to vetted sponsors."

Federal officials say that flights carrying migrant children happen at all hours, and that they don't release information about the children on board to protect their privacy. Even the contractor operating the charter flights hasn't changed since the Trump administration, they note.

These people were released from CBP/INS control to await their asylum court dates and heading to shelters for further services and processing. They were lured by a private "angel" with promises of receiving job opportunities, connections to distance relatives, and bribed with gift cards, then lied to about their ultimate destination.

Saying that this is analogous to the government transferring people to other destinations with resources and programs to help them is the height of false equivalence and emblematic of the vileness of those spewing these types of garbage comparisons geared towards those who don't know any better.

You wanna know what's most vile about DeSantis intentionally picking Venezuelans?

These Christian refugees traveled through 10 countries - by foot - to seek legal asylum from their communist leader who was murdering and persecuting them within their former country ... and Ron DeSantis decided to use their tragic misery, despair and desperation by turning them into pawns to own the libs - who immediately sprung into action and welcomed and provided for these people and set up resources to help them assimilate.

If you have evidence they were coerced or even deceived, then by all means post it. Otherwise, there's absolutely no reason to assume that. It's reasonable to infer that many who supposedly journeyed that far on foot to get to a southern border state would jump at the chance to go further north. They're not really facing any more uncertainty in this situation than when they put their fates in the hands of the coyote caravans; arguably, far less.

The migrants on Wednesday's planes did not know they were being taken to Martha's Vineyard specifically, according to the legal group helping them.

They were induced to board the planes with "representations of work assistance and immigration relief in Boston," the Lawyers for Civil Rights group said in a news release.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis speaks at a rally in support of Pennsylvania Republican gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano on August 19, 2022, in Pittsburgh.
Analysis: Ron DeSantis is getting *exactly* what he wanted

"Mid-flight, they were informed they were not going to Boston after all, but to Martha's Vineyard. They were dropped on the island without notice to anyone in the community," the news release reads.

Biden has been flying illegal immigrants all over the country for over a year.

So did Trump, you make it sound like Biden has a started something new.

It's per HHS and it sends people to places where they are readily prepared and properly setup to handle this.

It's NOT sending them to places as a SURPRISE SUPRISE and make a stunt out of it.

Donald Trump's entire (2016) campaign was centered on fear of illegal immigrants. For two years the GOP had the White House and Congress yet did not even hold a vote on an immigration bill much less pass one. Why?

They don't want to fix illegal immigration. They want to exploit it.

If they can provide compelling evidence, then someone will go to jail for that. Very unlikely that it would be anyone high up, though. Just like with hiring undocumented immigrants, politicians are good at shielding themselves from how things are implemented as long as it gets the end result that they asked for.

That said, it feels like outrage grandstanding. Any claims appearing to be used to evoke an emotional response should always be taken with a huge grain of salt, no matter who they come from.

Nope. The money came from interest earned by banked federal Covid relief funds sent to Florida that weren't spent. The legislature gave him a $12 million bag for relocating undocumenteds coming into Florida, moving them to other states.

However, the legislative language does not allow him to use such funds to remove immigrants from OTHER states - which is precisely what he's done in this instance.

Ardenis Nazareth, newly arrived from Venezuela, was standing in a McDonald's parking lot across the street from a San Antonio shelter a few days ago contemplating his next steps.

After a monthslong odyssey through seven countries he had finally made it to the United States. It was time to banish from his thoughts the worst moments - when he was robbed at gunpoint and people dropped dead of exhaustion beside him as they crossed a lawless jungle, and when he watched helplessly as his friend was swallowed by the turbulent waters of the Rio Grande, just before touching U.S. soil in Texas.

Now Mr. Nazareth had one objective in mind: make money to support the two young daughters he had left behind.

That is when a well-dressed woman who introduced herself as Perla handed him and about 30 other migrants gift cards for the fast-food restaurant, which they gladly accepted. Then she made an enticing offer: a free flight to a "sanctuary," he recalled, where there were people to help them get on their feet. The place was called Massachusetts.

Was that close to New York, Mr. Nazareth asked. She assured him that it was, and that onward travel would be available, if that is where he hoped to settle. Yet he was surprised when he found himself on Martha's Vineyard, a small, picturesque vacation destination in the Atlantic. "I thought I was coming to Boston," he said. "I ended up on this little island."

Mr. Nazareth recalled that the woman he met at McDonald's went table to table making the same offer. Before long, Mr. Nazareth and seven other Venezuelans climbed into a van driven by the woman to reach an airport hotel. More Venezuelans checked in over the following days, until about 50 were placed on charter flights on Wednesday that delivered them to Martha's Vineyard.

Carlos Guanaguanay, 25, said that he and two friends were strolling through the aisles of a supermarket near the shelter in San Antonio a few days ago when a woman approached them.

"She asked us what we were doing here," he recalled. "We said that we were looking for work." Three days later, they were traveling on a bus from the La Quinta hotel with other Venezuelans to board a Massachusetts-bound flight.

"We faced hunger, slept in the streets but we have arrived," said Mr. Guanaguanay, a motorcycle mechanic.

He had a 4-year-old daughter and wife back home. "I want to get to work, that's all I want now," he said, "and if I can do that here, I'll stay on the island."

Cont.

A man named Luis who had journeyed from the northern Venezuelan state of Lara with nine family members " including his wife, brothers and cousins - said they traveled through seven countries before making it to San Antonio and boarding the flight to Massachusetts.

Luis, who did not want to share his surname out of concern for his safety, said that after spending three days in San Antonio, his family also encountered a blonde woman in the street who said her name was Perla. The woman, he said, told them she was affiliated with a foundation that helped transport refugees to sanctuary cities and could book them on a flight to Massachusetts. One caveat: They could not take any pictures.

When the pilot announced they were about to land on Martha's Vineyard, the migrants were shocked, Luis said: "That's the first time we heard that." He broke down in tears when he got to the island.

Like other migrants, his family has paperwork from border authorities informing them to report to an immigration office within 15 days, and the man said he feared that his family had been tricked into flying to the island to then be deported.

Luis Amador Castillo, 34, recalled that he and a friend, Francisco, had crossed the street to the McDonald's near the shelter.

A woman handed them bottles of water and gift cards from the restaurant. Are you interested in a free hotel stay and a free flight to Massachusetts? she asked with a smile.

There are people waiting for you with food, shelter and ready to help you with whatever you need, the woman told them, Mr. Castillo recalled. Francisco jumped at the idea.

We now learn that "Perla," the woman who coaxed the migrants on to the DeSantis Air flights under false pretenses, paid another migrant, a 27 year old Venezuelan named Emmanuel, for the contact information of the migrants Perla would eventually coax onto the plane. Emmanuel gave her contact info for about 10 migrants he'd met at the migrant center where they were saying.

Emmanuel told the San Antonio Report that he was at first hesitant to give Perla, who he described as a blonde driving a white truck, the migrants' contact information. Perla told him the money came from an "anonymous benefactor" who was also paying for the flights.

Emmanuel showed the reporter, Raquel Torres, a picture of Perla's business card which included her first name and a phone number that went unanswered Thursday evening.

What seems clear now is that "Perla" was tasked with organizing or procuring Venezuelan immigrants in Texas for the flights to Martha's Vineyard which Ron DeSantis says was organized and paid for by the state of Florida.

Ron DeSantis may have just sunk all his ambitious dreams with this immoral - if not illegal - stunt. We'll soon find out just what how many Christians actually cheer on those doing exactly the opposite of biblical teachings and the commands of historical Jesus.

(for kidnapping, the term inveigle means to lure, lead astray, or entice by false representations or other deceitful means; as such, a person who entices another to ride in a car with a false promise to take the person to a certain destination has inveigled the passenger into the car). www.armfor.uscourts.gov

I watched a MA prosecutor say that MA is one of only a handful of US states that do have KIDNAPPING BY TRICKERY OR DECEIT (INVEIGLE) laws on their books under which all of those involved in the conspiracy could be charged.

Now, she didn't definitively say that it would happen, but she opened the door to that possibility. In the short term, I think putting the spotlight upon GOP governors actively involved in re-election races using government funds to relocate asylum seekers with current legal status only places another cherry on top of their anti-abortion, anti-minority, and openly white supremacist machinations that may energize base voters but are turning off most everyone else.

I truly believe that these people are convinced that they comprise a majority of American voters and that anti-humane policies and demonization are winning stances. Guess we'll find out in a few weeks whether they're right or hopefully proven fatefully wrong.
