Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Monday, September 19, 2022

Steve Benen: One of points of the Martha's Vineyard stunt was to prove that liberals would reject migrants. That plan failed. Republicans are now pretending it didn't.

The day that DeSantis' chartered planes landed on the Massachusetts island, his political operation hinted at one of the motivations behind the stunt: They were going to prove that liberal rhetoric about welcoming migrants was wrong. The proof would come when Martha's Vineyard residents lashed out at the struggling people the Floridian had dumped in their community.

Those assumptions were quickly discredited when locals rallied to assist the human beings DeSantis exploited as political props. The migrants and their families were taken to a base on Cape Cod to be cared for because there were no comparable facilities on Martha's Vineyard. As the NBC affiliate in Boston reported, "Shortly after the arrival of the migrants, Martha's Vineyard residents joined with local and state officials to create temporary shelter and provide food and other necessities. But [REPUBLICAN Gov. Charlie] Baker's administration said the island is not equipped to provide ongoing food and shelter, so transportation was provided on Friday to bring the migrants to the new temporary shelter on Cape Cod."

Residents of Martha's Vineyard treated these migrants and their families with dignity and compassion, and they're now poised to receive additional assistance from the state.

Yep, DeSantis, Cruz and all the Republican gaslighters all showed that the libs actually put their money and hearts where their political beliefs are. They actually care about the displaced migrants and made sure their immediate needs were taken care of, albeit for the 48 hours they were on the island.

Republicans often make the mistake of thinking that liberals are just as selfish and mean as are Republicans. Time after time the facts show that is not a true assumption.

#2 As always, Ballsucker is a liar. Martha's Vineyard has no long-term lodging or amenities for REFUGEES. More importantly, it appears that the DuhSatin folks managed to re-schedule court hearings for these refugees to immigration courts all over the country; it's almost like they were trying to screw these people's chance of getting refugee status.

The fact is that these refugees have done FAR MORE to be in this country than DuhSatin or Dotard, his useless crotch fruit, or ANY GQP member of Congress who did not serve, so Pedo Gaetz, Madge Traitor Greene, Lowrent Boobert, etc., and you Ballsucker. Unlike you useless POS who won life's lottery by being born in a free first-world country, these folks risked terror, death, and worse, walking across something like ten countries to be here. If we give them an opportunity, they will be contributing members of our society because that's what immigrants do. The people in Martha's Vineyard made Jesus Christ proud; they turned out in droves and welcomed these strangers; they provided what aid and comfort they could, but the refugee's needs were better served in a larger population center with access to immigration lawyers and a court.

Announce to the world that you are a welcoming sanctuary and do nothing to prepare for any refugees that take you up on that promise. Can't get much more vacuous and empty than that. Lift not one finger to prepare one bed. In the words of of every bleeding heart liberal, "Let someone else do it."

CLOWN

There is a bigger picture playing out. What we've been watching since the day Trump was elected, and up to this very moment, is an overate attempt by DeSantis, a Trump wannabe, to accelerate America's very own version of Germany's holocaust.

I'm not surprised that Trump is fuming. Not because of any human rights violation or breaking of laws, but rather because the acceleration was supposed to be Trump's job when he regained power. It's rather obvious at this point that Trump and DeSantis are in a cage match for supremacy.

It almost doesn't matter who the GOP supports in the run up to 2024. They'll support the candidate who has the most juice to complete the G.O.P.'s mission. If either candidate is successful, I think we'll be looking at repeat of Germany 1933-1945.

It's hard for America to fathom that such evil still exists in the hearts and minds of America's leaders. We've been so comfortable with our Constitutional protections all these years. But it does exist and, not only that, its sneaking up on our innocent blindside.

More proof that American Cons have discarded every moral or idea they ever had.
These folks walked 3000 miles to escape Communism because they see America as a bastion of freedom. Isn't that one of the things that makes them so proud of this country? Republicans should be shouting their praise from the roof-tops instead of torturing and exploiting them. Have they no self-reflection? How do they think this story looks to the rest of the oppressed world?

But the budget isn't allocated for that purpose. Only in conservative states are the executives allowed to take whatever money they want (for example, money appropriated to ship unauthorized immigrants out of Florida) and use it however they want to (another hypothetical, using FL taxpayer money to lie to and ship authorized immigrants from TX to MA).

Now if they had TOLD MA they were doing this, then maybe MA could have properly allocated the money to take care of these people. But that would defeat the point (cruelty is the point... see the article about TX in it's contract banning bus contractors from talking to the governments of places they are shipping people to?).

It would be more accurate to say Republicans set up a catch-22 for "liberals". Shipping the migrants anywhere else lets them use the talking point of "rejecting" them. Openly welcoming the migrants lets them use the talking point of liberals encouraging mass migration caravans.

It's really not a good look for Democrats if their chief criticism of their opponents appears to be that they're more sly at politicking than they are.

Don't be an idiot.

It's an island/resort area, where you get there by ferry.

Don't you think a proper sanctuary city would be a more responsible location?

And on top of all that, they were welcomed (and taken care of) there when people had zero clue they were actually coming.

So "kicked out" makes you sound dense, and zero feel for nuance.

Again, analysis is simply black and white, no nuance.

MV was surprised by the visit, and acted humanely. Refugees were embraced. Republicans lost that game.

Then, MV looked to get these refugees the proper help they desperately need. Lost the second game.

All at the same time ripping on Repubs for a political stunt. Lost the finale.

Where is it a catch-22? Seems like a three-game sweep to me.

The only way Republicans could have won is if they were literally sent back to Texas.

The problem is that DuhSatin and Hot Wheels have effectively changed the election narrative over the past week. Nobody is talking about abortion or the fact that their cult leader is being investigated for espionage and is likely a worse traitor than even Dems were willing to accuse him of. But DuhSatin is now answering questions about kidnapping and human trafficking as he pisses off swaths of the electorate in his state. He'll still have to answer the abortion question, as the vast majority of States, including Floriduh, are not really impacted by illegal immigration, seeing as he had to fly refugees INTO FL from TX in order to fly them out.

Or will it? Will DeSantis face legal consequences?

If he does, I believe the biden administration will take some ---- as well. As it was confirmed, we know DHS employees were who lied to the migrants in Texas before they flew to MV. Those folks work for Biden, not DeSantis.

And what is the real story DeSantis wanted out there? That he's mean and cruel? Of course that was assumed. That he'd be accused of cruelty.

But for every potential DeSantis voter who might be turned off by this stunt, how many folks are now aware of what we're doing with 10s of thousand of other immigrants being flown around in the middle of the night?

We know how lazy the American voter is especially the oh so coveted swing voter in a swing state. How are they looking at this?

DeSantis is mean

WTF is going on at the border? Are we really bussing and flying 10s of thousands of migrants all over the country?

Not for the hotel owners, unless they were going out of business already anyway and were kept alive by some government money for housing the homeless. But once they become a homeless shelter, they're kind of stuck that way.

Do you want to stay in a hotel that had a homeless person in it the previous night?

Do maids want to work at a hotel that has homeless people staying in it?

I just want to point out that comments like this is how we can tell you are not a good faith actor in the discussion. Much like DeSantis, who you seem to be going to bat for.

What DeSantis did, in moving refugees from Texas to Florida to Massachusetts, and without making plans for their arrival in Massachusetts, is far outside the nor of what most Governors do; perhaps unprecedented since they're asylum seekers and not simply homeless people. And it's a charter plane and not a Greyhound bus. And because it's a political stunt at the national level and part of the rising tide of fascism.

Whereas the President is bound by the Constitution to do thinks like DeSantis did.

DeSantis isn't.

DeSantis picked up this ball and ran with it, and thought it wise to spike the football in Martha's Vineyard, which coincidentally is Obama's summer home.

There's literally no comparison between these "teams."

In which the interest earned from unspent FEDERAL Covid relief money was placed into a discretionary fund at DeSantis' disposal.

IOW, the American taxpayers are funding these kidnappings and relocations of legal asylum seekers escaping from a brutal communist regime - which is exactly what Republicans have advocated such people do for decades - who'd never set foot in Florida until their planes landed and refueled there over the course of less than one hour.

I like how JeffJ is defending what DeSantis did by saying he's not defending it but it's crazy to call it kidnapping.

What's wrong with it, outside the kidnapping?

More proof that American Cons have discarded every moral or idea they ever had.
These folks walked 3000 miles to escape Communism because they see America as a bastion of freedom. Isn't that one of the things that makes them so proud of this country? Republicans should be shouting their praise from the roof-tops instead of torturing and exploiting them. Have they no self-reflection? How do they think this story looks to the rest of the oppressed world?

#11 | Posted by TFDNihilist

As most of us know, you included, they have every right under international law to seek asylum.

I hope DeSantis faces charges. And what the flying f*** does he have to do with goings on in Texas other than spending taxpayer money on buses and planes.

BTW, most Trumpers have no idea that over 2 million were arrested for sneaking across the border instead of presenting at a border crossing where they can seek asylum. That's a record. Trumpers wanna pretend Biden is just waving everyone in, which is a lie. But Republicans have taken lying to a whole 'nother level.

And let's see what DeSantis does when the next boatload of Cubans land on Florida's shores.

He'll be a different animal, seeking to gain points with the Cuban community. Venezuela and Cuba are almost twin countries. Both essentially dictatorships, both with citizens seeking to leave for the same reasons.

I'd characterize it the same way the civil rights attorneys who sued DeSantis over this characterized it:

Plaintiffs have led lives inflicted by violence, instability, insecurity, and abuse of trust by corrupt government officials that most Americans could hardly conceive of. They fled to the United States in a desperate attempt to protect themselves and their families from gang, police, and state-sponsored violence and the oppression of political dissent. To put it simply, Plaintiffs, and the class of similarly situated individuals they seek to represent, are vulnerable in a way and to an extent that almost defies verbal description. They are as deserving of dignity and empathy as anyone among us.

In or around September 2022, Defendants and their unidentified accomplices designed and executed a premeditated, fraudulent, and illegal scheme centered on exploiting this vulnerability for the sole purpose of advancing their own personal, financial and political interests. This scheme involved the unidentified Doe Defendants, acting in concert with the named Defendants, identifying and targeting class members by trolling streets outside of a migrant shelter in Texas and other similar locales, pretending to be good Samaritans offering humanitarian assistance.

To gain the Plaintiffs' trust, and to induce unwitting cooperation with Defendants' scheme, the Doe Defendants provided items such as $10 McDonalds gift certificates to class members suffering from chronic food insecurity. After luring Plaintiffs by exploiting their most basic needs, the Doe Defendants then made false promises and false representations that if Plaintiffs and class members were willing to board airplanes to other states, they would receive employment, housing, educational opportunities, and other like assistance upon their arrival. Next, the Defendants put class members up for free in hotels, sequestered away from the migrant center, and from the possibility of actual good Samaritans finding out how the class members were being abused.

On information and belief, the Defendants procured and paid $615,000 for private chartered planes ($12,300 per passenger), transported class members to the aircrafts, and told them they were flying to Boston or Washington, D.C., which was completely false. Instead, the chartered airplanes dropped Plaintiffs off on Martha's Vineyard in the evening, with no food, water or shelter. No one on Martha's Vineyard"or, on information and belief"anywhere in Massachusetts"knew they were coming. The Doe Defendants disappeared and did not answer alarmed calls from the class members to get information about what had gone wrong after they landed. But nothing had "gone wrong." Instead, the scheme worked exactly as the Defendants intended.

These immigrants, who are pursuing the proper channels for lawful immigration status in the United States, experienced cruelty akin to what they fled in their home country. Defendants manipulated them, stripped them of their dignity, deprived them of their liberty, bodily autonomy, due process, and equal protection under law, and impermissibly interfered with the Federal Government's exclusive control over immigration in furtherance of an unlawful goal and a personal political agenda.

The next day, Governor DeSantis claimed credit for the ruse, and the class members and their plight became front page news across the country. As set forth more fully below, the Defendants' inhumane and morally repugnant conduct (i) violated protections afforded to the Plaintiffs by the United States Constitution, (ii) violated federal statutes including 42 U.S.C. 1983 and 42 U.S.C. 1985(3), and (iii) was tortious, entitling Plaintiffs and other class members to monetary, injunctive, and other relief as set forth herein.

#75. I read that and honestly cannot stop laughing. The equivocations and the sheer horror of the "kidnapping" is seriously hilarious if it were an op Ed at "The Conservatives are Evil Tribune". That it's actually a lawsuit is side splitting funny.

Throw in the ridiculous allegation that it was done for personal, financial and political gain. Political gain? Yes. Personal gain? Harder to define. Financial gain? Absurd.

Have fun being outraged over this. I'll stand back and point and laugh. All this is accomplishing is elevating DeSantis.

"The left is acting like they were duped into being sent to Auschwitz."

^
The manner in which they were duped is much closer to the Reverse Freedom Rides of the Civil Rights Era.
Were the Reverse Freedom Rides of the Civil Rights Era wrong?

Reverse Freedom Rides were attempts in 1962 by Southern segregationists to send African Americans from Southern cities to mostly Northern, and some western, cities by bus.[1][2] They were given free one-way bus tickets, and were promised guaranteed high paying jobs and free housing. Those promises were intended to lure African Americans in. In reality, there was no guaranteed free housing or jobs waiting for them. Some of those arriving were able to find work; most could not.[3]

Given the days long sheer outrage by the left and the exposure of astounding NIMBY hypocrisy and shining a spotlight on an issue - illegal immigration - that is politically harmful to the left, I'd say this has been a huge political success.

#82. The lawsuit is a risible joke. Lefty Dem lawyers are exploiting these people for personal, financial and political gain. They are being used as pawns. I'm quite confident that when these migrants arrived at MV they weren't screaming to see their lawyers. Far more likely they were approached by ambulance chaser hacks and were promised riches if they signed onto a class action lawsuit that they probably don't even understand.

Here is some legal analysis and it delves in a bit:

"However, most of these claims are highly dubious and will require substantially more factual support to survive a threshold challenge. The first challenge will be to show that the waiver was secured by trick or fraud"
