President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia accelerated his war effort in Ukraine on Wednesday, announcing a new campaign that would call up roughly 300,000 reservists to the military while also directly challenging the West over its support for Ukraine with a veiled threat of using nuclear weapons.

In a rare videotaped address to the nation, Mr. Putin stopped short of declaring a full, national draft but instead called for a "partial mobilization" of people with military experience. Though Moscow's troops have recently suffered humiliating losses on the battlefield, he said that Russia's goals in Ukraine had not changed and that the move was "necessary and urgent" because the West had "crossed all lines" by providing sophisticated weapons to Ukraine.

Reaction from Western nations was swift, with British and European Union officials calling Mr. Putin's move a sign that his war is failing. China, which has been an increasingly important ally of Russia, issued a brief statement from its Foreign Ministry that called for all parties "to reach a cease-fire through dialogue and negotiations."

President Biden, in an interview with "60 Minutes" aired Sunday night on CBS, warned Mr. Putin against using nuclear weapons on the battlefield. "Don't. Don't. Don't," Mr. Biden said when asked what his message was to Mr. Putin. "You will change the face of war unlike anything since World War II."

All it would take to collapse the Putin regime at this point is for a majority of these people not to report.

No, I take that back. If a significant minority don't report then Putin is history.

You're dreaming. They will report and fight. This isn't over. Its just beginning apparently.

The Donbass will rejoin Russia. This is prelude
to a real catastrophe.
Possible nuclear war. It really, really, sucks to live in interesting times.

The way both sides are dug in it looks like this war is getting ready to become dangerous for everyone.

I see no peaceful solution.

This "partial mobilization" of people with military experience." is going to lead to Putin's downfall. These people were minding their own business and building a life for themselves. All of a sudden, Putin is calling them up to risk their lives for a war of his choosing; a war that doesn't threaten the Russian people! They are going to be pissed and the people that are going to bear the brunt of their anger will be the officers in the field. These officers will be dropping like flies from "friendly fire", fragging, etc.

Russian public opinion is turning against Putin. This call up of reservists will only exacerbate things.

Use of tactical nuclear weapons by Russia would put a target on every major piece of infrastructure in Russia; including the Kremlin itself. I have no doubt that Biden would authorize the sell and use of long range missiles, fighter aircraft, etc. to the Ukrainians. Couple that with precise targeting instructions and Russia is in for a real fight. But, before that happens, I suspect someone close to Putin will put him out of his misery.

A peaceful solution may be obtained after Putin is assassinated by his own people.

Look, I think this war is retarded. Putin is being incredibly stupid. But the Russians are not going to revolt. That's fantasy, not reality. How did popular revolt work out for US interests in Venezuela? Or just about anywhere it's been expected?

Russia made the same stupid mistake in believing the Ukrainian's would not fight either.

This ---- is getting really serious. If ever there was a time for dialogue and diplomacy it's now.

But I see no chance for that. Actually I think nuclear war is more likely than a negotiated settlement and cease fire.

And that,is truly,depressing.

No people need have any loyalty to a dictator.

That applies to Trump and DeSantis as much as Putin.

Yeah, that's why the Russian airlines are no longer allowed to sell plane tickets to men 18-65 years old. Because they were flying to the front lines.

@#1 ... Though Moscow's troops have recently suffered humiliating losses on the battlefield, he said that Russia's goals in Ukraine had not changed and that the move was "necessary and urgent" because the West had "crossed all lines" by providing sophisticated weapons to Ukraine. ...

It was Pres Putin who "crossed all lines" with his unprovoked invasion of a sovereign Ukraine for the purpose of annexing and eliminating Ukraine.

Before that invasion, the West was actually starting to interact with Russia both economically and socially, and tensions were lowering.

But Pres Putin's imperialistic aims, i.e., reclaiming the grandeur of the old Soviet Union, got in the way of that trend.

Now Europe is moving to increase its defenses after Pres Putin's unprovoked invasion of a sovereign Ukraine for the purpose of annexing and eliminating Ukraine.

Pres Putin appears to be gearing up for a major war, one that he started, and countries in Europe are now wondering ~who is next?~

From the cited article...

..."If the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will certainly use all the means at our disposal to protect Russia and our people," Pres Putin] said. "This is not a bluff."...

Once Pres Putin annexes the territory they currently occupy (about 20% of Ukraine), then any attempts to put that territory back under Ukraine's sovereignty will be viewed by Pres Putin as an attack on Russia and its people.

That is one reason why Pres Putin is moving so fast to annex the territory, he is looking for a reason to escalate the war he started.

How quickly can newly mobilized troops be trained? Will they be trained?

Russians are leaving because now they know that Vlad's Excellent Adventure in Ukraine has backfired... and they want no part of going there to try to put out the fire that Putin started.

Yeah it's so unfortunate the way one side is DUG IN to invading and seizing a free country and slaughtering innocent civilians, and the other side is DUG IN on continuing to exist.

Both sides are clearly the problem.

Then maybe you should switch your online propaganda efforts from trying to justify putin's invasion to trying to get your fellow countrymen to overthrow him.

Putin should take precautions.

Only use the newest of Russia's nukes.

Would be a shame if one accidentally malfunctioned and exploded during launch.

I Don't Want to Be Cannon Fodder': Panic and Fear as Russia Begins Mobilization
www.themoscowtimes.com

...Thousands of conscription-age Russian men appeared to be attempting to flee the country Wednesday as others planned how to avoid being sent to the front after President Vladimir Putin declared a partial military mobilization for the war in Ukraine.

"I don't want to be cannon fodder," one 30-year-old Muscovite who asked for anonymity to speak freely told The Moscow Times.

The most obvious way for men to avoid conscription is to leave the country and Wednesday's direct flights from Russia to Armenia, Turkey and Azerbaijan -- nearby countries that allow Russians to enter without a visa -- quickly sold out....

These people who don't want to fight should decide that if they are forced to fight, that they will do it in their own country on their own streets against their own government rather murdering innocent citizens in some other country's cities and towns.

More than 1,300 arrested in Russia yesterday as the word of this spread. Turns out Russians aren't happy dying for Putin's unwarranted war of aggression.

One-way flights out of Russia were rocketing in price and selling out fast on Wednesday after Putin ordered the immediate call-up of 300,000 reservists.

The Moscow prosecutor's office warned that organizing or participating in protests could lead to up to 15 years in prison.
