Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell's first proposed budget expands funding for the Seattle Police Department by $20 million " largely by transferring parking enforcement back to the department " and uses payroll taxes to help fill a $140 million-plus revenue shortfall.

I agree that defunding the police is not a good idea.

The problems law enforcement has will not be solved by decreasing their funding (as Seattle found out).

The problems law enforcement has will be solved by getting people on the force who really want to Protect and Serve, and Protect and Serve everyone, not just those they choose to.

For starters, the Blue Wall of Silence has to be eliminated. All that does is allow the behavior of bad officers to be hidden.

Next, I'd want the body camera videos to be given to the custody of a non-law enforcement entity. Do we give the security video inside banks to the person who robbed the bank for safe keeping?

There's more, but I'll start with those two.

And this is why Lamplighter and me agree on this subject while so many idiots hate cops with the anger of a teenager who got caught spray painting a library.

And Lamplighter not to take away from your good points but it's not like there can only be one copy from a police body camera we could easily give a copy to any number of groups and individuals.

Up the salary to attract more qualified individuals, as you just described, and reform the unions. It would be a significant start.

It won't come from increasing the funds either.

It will come from properly using the abundantly adequate funds they're already receiving.

Billions are already going to the police.

Instead of cops in tanks, we need to start funding mental healthcare facilities. Funding social workers to deal with domestic issues. Easier access to rehab and job training.

More funding for public education at the junior and state college level.

It's time to address the problem, rather than simply trying to control its results.

"largely by transferring parking enforcement back to the department"

You sure this is the victory you want to claim, Tor?
Twenty million in taxes for more meter maids?

Paid street parking generates $37 million for the city annually, with another $21.8 million raised from tickets.

Admittedly these number are 7 years old, but you're talking about spending $20M to make just over $20M.

This is a jobs program for high school dropouts with GEDs also known as Cops.

This again is real adult thinking as opposed to teenage hating.

Which is my point about re-appropriating more money towards salaries. Promise more money to be earned with the understanding that higher standards will be expected, more training will be implemented, and expectations in the field will no longer afford the "shoot first, ask questions later" philosophy legitimacy.

None of that incentivizes more qualified professionals to enter the force.

You're under the false assumption they're attempting to hire more qualified personnel.

I'm telling you, they like people who will break the backs they're told to without asking why.

It's a tale as old as time and it's not going to change.

Otherwise you would have insubordination and that sounds like an ineffective police/military unit.

That is some awfully big broad-brushing you are doing. You might find recruitment at some precincts that fit that mold but nowhere near all of them. Not even close.

Seattle PD had the most insurrectionist cops of any PD at the Jan 6 riots.
If you ever lived in Seattle, you know the cops there are notoriously racist.
Or even if you don't, you might know about it. Like the one time that one Seattle cop made national headlines for threatening to beat the Mexican piss out of that Army guy.

Will cops EVER say they have enough funding?

Cops stage work slowdown to prove "civilian" administrations can't tell them how to do their jobs.
