The 39th president's latest milestone comes as The Carter Center, which the Carters established together after their one White House term, marks 40 years of promoting democracy and conflict resolution, monitoring elections, and advancing public health in the developing world.

"His people that he feels sort of the closest connection with now are the folks in Plains, at his church and other places," Jason Carter said. "But, you know, his partner No. 1, 2 and 3 is my grandma, right? He has outlived friends and so many of his advisers and the people that he accomplished so much with in the past, but they've never been lonely because they've always had each other."

Happy Birthday to the most humane and giving President this nation has ever had.

As our President he certainly didn't have a record of great success. But as role model who leads by example, he and Rosalynn are peerless - both for their marked impact on the world and their own personal longevity.

Hands down America's greatest ex-president.

And if people who are turning 80 need someone to look up to I would recommend Mr carter.

Hollywood needs to hurry up and make a movie about young Jimmy Carter helping to prevent a nuclear disaster.

Hunter S. Thompson shares a candid, blunt assessment of U.S. President Jimmy Carter - calling him one of the "three meanest men I've ever met". Thompson says Carter "would have cut my head off" to win power but that he admires how he played the political game.

The reason Carter wasn't perceived to be a success was because he told Paul Volker to put the screws to the economy to beat inflation. He told everyone there was going to be pain, but voters took the easy way out and elected Reagan to loot the treasury.

Just a Class Act. Happy birthday, Ex-Pres. Carter.

You're one of the few good ones. At least post presidency?

As president you were part of the Blob.

Probably not entirely your fault, tho'.

"Hands down America's greatest ex-president." - TOR

I agree.

As a president he sucked. Even he admitted he vastly underestimated the Soviets.

But among former presidents, he's the absolute best.

What a wonderful human being and actual Christian.

Many parts of humanity aren't ready for Carter's level of Christianity.

Maybe when we start screening kids for psychopathology* we can get there.

I'm not suggesting they be harmed just prepared for a different life than the rest of us as firefighters, emt's, undertakers, and surgeons.

As a president he sucked.

C'mon... he brought us Billy! Imagine if you will... Billy with a laptop...

He's one of the better elder statesmen former presidents this country has ever had. Behind only Hoover and Trump.

Nixon, Bush II, and Trump were never president?

In your world, of course that's true.

Dark Brandon has earned the right to be called at least an average president.

You people have elected three Failures within one average lifetime.

I don't know about Hoover. I do know about Trump.

And because I know, I know you're stupid. Deliberately so, I imagine, so you can still fit in the cult.

If cats go missing around here come Halloween, it's people like you under suspicion.

Zed,

You took the bait.

Hoover's work on helping prevent mass starvation in Europe right after WWII was IMO the best elder statesman work by any former president.

Throwing Trump's name out there was troll bait.

Hoover is famous for being the repug thug who killed World War One Veterans in DC.

Hoover and Trumpy are rated as amongst the 10 worst Presidents in US history.

No wonder you like him.

This is why he can't help himself from defending Trump.

You're projecting your inadequacies onto Jimmy Carter.

You're one of the more miserable people here.

Rightfully so, as you look back on your dwindling life and see nothing worth bragging about.

President Carter is a great man and a president with a moral compass.

And even in his retirement continues to be an example for all.

Trumpers will probably never ever understand this being as they obviously lack any semblance of a moral compass.

Like I likely say every time Carter is the subject I am certain that c. 2006 I saw an article by a conservative wondering if Carter wasn't a conservative prophet so far ahead of his time other conservatives couldn't comprehend what he was doing.

I don't disagree. But he sucked at being President.

Carter was handed an economy with sky high inflation. Gerald Ford's campaign motto was "WIN" - Whip Inflation Now. Carter didn't create inflation.

Then there's the matter of Reagan telling the Iranians to hold off releasing the American hostages until after the election.

If lifespan was strictly the result of morality the end of the world would see the Carters (Jimmy and his wife) spreading the message of Christ to highly evolved cockroaches.

Bit of a micromanager as prez, but a terrific example of a decent person doing decent things. He will be remembered for a "retirement" life well lived in service to others. Kudos.
