Respiratory illnesses are raging this fall, slamming children particularly hard. Cases of influenza-like illnesses are off to a startlingly strong and early start this season. RSV -- respiratory syncytial (sin-SISH-uhl) virus -- continues to skyrocket.

The parents may be home right now with the children but they will return to work soon enough. When they do, it is likely they will spread such infections among co-workers. This always lags what goes around in schools. With holiday shopping season going on right now, it means there will be far less workers out there at a time when they are needed most.

A friend of mine's four year old just spent a week in the ICU with RSV. When someone on her time suggested that this could be controlled with universal mask wearing, she went off about "muzzling children". Ya can't fix stupid.

And unfortunately Covid is not done with us either.

Our local high school football team just lost its last game of the season (a championship game) because too many players were out sick with Covid.

Same thing happened to a local girls soccer team. Six players apparently got Covid and couldn't play.

And several of our elders have died from Covid in the last few days in the hospital.
