Jill Lawrence: If our political and legal systems worked, there wouldn't be a Donald Trump 2024 campaign -- We're running out of time to prove to Americans that our legal system can deliver impartial justice.

Certain very specific Republicans (persons who see themselves as Republicans and not Americans) refused to nail the man when they could and now they will have to suffer along with us. The only good thing is that they're suffering first.

It's always been a lie, Donald Trump is just more honest about that.

If our political and Legal systems worked, progressives would follow the constitution instead of whining about how old they are.
If our political and Legal systems worked, progressives wouldnt be talking about "living" documents and follow how our Constitutional Republic makes changes instead of trying to use judges to mandate things.

If "ifs" and "buts" were "dicks" and "butts", there would be a lot more gay sex.

So, perhaps you can explain how holding present day women and PoC to the laws established before they had any rights, is just? And further can you explain why the rights of women and PoC should be held hostage to the constitutional process you tout?

Mitch McConnell is a progressive? He'd find that amusing.

Look at it this way.

If our political and legal system didn't work, Trump would have declared himself President for Life by now.

Kudos to America's political and legal system. It won!

#10 I agree.. Unlike many here, I never believed the riot, insurrection, attempted coup, or whatever you want to call it was a real threat to our democracy. Our democracy is certainly strong enough to withstand that kind of attack, and our electoral system had built in safeguards to prevent disruption of the vote count from reinstating Trump.

More damage has been done to our democracy by incessant rhetoric and fear mongering, supporting an illusion that this "coup" was almost successful, that this merry band of nuts was *this close*. to overturning the election and overthrowing democracy altogether. The extremists have since celebrated this "achievement" and are emboldened by the attention and their elevated status as a threat "worse than ISIS".

After 911, virtually nobody was saying, "they almost destroyed America". Then again, some fools have short memories and like to suggest that Jan 6 was worse than 911.

It did?
What are they?

Snoofy, the system worked. It's why Biden is currently the President. But if you and the others want to continue on with the whole.. 1/6 was worse than 9/11 you're welcome to do that ...

"More damage has been done to our democracy by incessant rhetoric and fear mongering,..."

You see, right here is why our country is ------. Claiming that the righteous anger over the attempt to overthrow our government caused more damage than the actual attempt itself. Ignoring for the moment that the perpetrators nearly succeeded, despite being incompetent idiots and owing to the patriotism of a few republicans. The attack on the heart of our country, cause despite it's problems, congress is the heart of our nation-it is where our laws are created, was unprecedented and something I never considered possible in America. but that wretched scum that was our president sent his deluded army at it to overturn an election he lost.

The coup attempt was very large involving the president, his WH staff, some congress people, some senators, state level politicians, farking militias, propaganda media etc. The coup failed because of the actions of a few-Pence for not allowing the SS to whisk him away, the SS for not allowing ------- to go to the Capitol, the few state officials who refused -------'s wishes and threats, Antifa for not taking the bait and showing up for a fight on 1/6.

It failed not because our democracy is somehow immune to such things but because of the incompetence of the perpetrators and again, a few good republicans. The tactics of the coup were varied and are not immediately clear, but the goal on 1/6 was to sow enough chaos to permit delay, delay until ------- had achieved enough uncertainty to wrest control or declare martial law. Members of the coup were advocating for that and fortunately ------- shrunk from making that decision.

For me, that attack was a singular disgusting act and my anger at the perpetrators has only increased over time. This is not over republican or democratic differences but a hatred for someone that wants to destroy the very fabric of our country. ---- them.

What would have happened if ------- had a different VP?

What would have happened if Raffensberger made different choices?

What would have happened if the SS drove ------- to the Capitol and he waddled into the HoR chambers?

We dodged a coup by a ----- hair.

Past performance is no guarantee of future results.

Beyomd that, the system working doesn't mean much.

The system worked when the Supreme Court repealed abortion rights and the Voting Rights Act.

If it worked a whole lot of crap would be different.

The system worked in spite of the GOP trying to kill it.

The question is, is it strong enough to survive the next time . . and the next time . . . and the next time?

Because we know the GOP is not going to stop trying. We're never going to be safe again.

Trump was a bull in the China shop. Surely the GOP knows that and will pick more wisely the next time.

"But if you and the others want to continue on with the whole.. 1/6 was worse than 9/11 you're welcome to do that ..."

Ln no way has that happened. Not even close. Our nation's reaction to 9-11 was massive. Our reaction fo 01/05 was miniscule in comparison but 9/11 was a terrorist attack while p1/2021 was a coup attenot and it is inconcievable that the primary perpetrators are still mostly free, especially the ring leder....Trump, who should be serving a life sentence in a federal penitentiary.

The legal system isn't set up to deal with billionaires like Trump who can hire armies of lawyers.

#23 | Posted by Tor at 2022-11-21 01:17 AM | Reply

TOR

Trump isn't a billionaire. Plus, he never pays for anything himself. What the GOP doesn't pick up Trump uses PAC money contributed by taxpayers, specifically the Save America PAC.

Don't sell the DOJ short. They have more money than Trump and the means to outclass anything Trump's legal team throws at them. Remember also that Trump doesn't really have a defense, so his lawyers are operating just one thin hair short of sanctions for wasting the courts time . . . plus the fact that Trump doesn't listen to his lawyers, preferring to micromanage the cases himself.

He loses a lot of lawyers and cases that way.
