When were the merits discussed? I can't recall that. I mostly remember false Ukrainian victories being crowed about and the evilness of Russians in General being discussed as fact.

Step away from the personalities, look at the facts. The Russians had good reason To be upset about the civil war on their border.

The Ukrainian's knew they were pushing their luck. They only got brave because they had help.
Absent that assistance the civil war would have been contained by the Minsk accords and war averted.
Why are people here so against giving the Russians in Donbass civil rights?
This could have easily been done without any further bloodshed if the Ukrainian leadership had implemented the Minsk accords.
