In the 1820s and 1830s, a Pequot minister named William Apess took aim at what would become Thanksgiving -- arguing that the nation needed to rethink the colonization of New England, and view it through Indigenous perspectives.

"In the midst of a war in 1637 " less than 20 years after the famous Plymouth feast " Pilgrims and their allies set a Pequot town on fire and shot those who tried to escape. They killed 400 to 700 on a single night, including children and elderly people. They captured Pequot survivors and shipped them to the Caribbean as slaves. Forty years later, Apess' ancestor, Metacom, led multiple Indigenous communities to battle for their homelands in a conflict known as King Philip's War. From 1675 to 1677, Indigenous and colonial soldiers laid waste to each other's communities, and colonists again bought and sold Indigenous captives, creating a market in enslaved bodies. The colonists believed Metacom and his allies posed the most serious crisis they had ever faced. After Metacom died in Rhode Island on Aug. 12, 1676, English soldiers decapitated him, and colonists mounted his head on a post in Plymouth as a warning."

Who does this guy think he is kidding?

This is America!!

Land of the Free and Home of the Brave.

Where Nothing Can Be Done (tm) about the terrible decisions we have made in the past and we don't ever talk about them much less rethink them.

No rethinking is allowed here!! Once we make a decision that's it. No backsies!!

And definitely No CRT (Critically Rethinking Thanksgiving) allowed!

Russia thinks the same way about themselves.

We're not better than them. We justify, Vietnam, Cambodia, Iraq, Panama, Grenada. Also Libya, Serbia, Haiti.

Who's calling for American leaders to be executed over them?

America hasn't changed at all since 1676.

Not a bit.

- Vietnam, Cambodia, Iraq, Panama, Grenada. Also Libya, Serbia, Haiti.

Annnd... which one of those did we invade on order to own?

These two things are not the same.

But just because we were wrong in the past, or the future, doesn't make what Vlad did OK.

This is all virtue signalling,"I am better than you", but they don't do anything about it.

It's really hilarious, they don't give two ----- about indigenous people, but they give two ----- they can "proclaim" themselves more virtuous than a you or I, because they have some story 400 years old that says ... something or other.

"they don't give two ----- about indigenous people"

Indigenous people are incidental to the contemporary issue being raised.

This is giving two ----- about the truth.

It's no surprise The Usual Suspects hate it.

As for the plight of natives,

Voting pattern shows which side they think their bread is buttered on. So unless you're saying they've been hoaxed I think it's quite clear which side is on their side.

Totally correct. African chattel slavery is common place and only rich landowners can vote.

Wage slavery is ubituitous, and corporations are people, with all the rights personhood confers.
Except they are fabulously wealthy and immortal. Supercitizens with outsized influence and control over policy

Money is speech. The media is controlled by five corporations that don't have to disclose their political donations.

The more things change the more they stay the same.

Endless wars that are never accounted for feed the coffers of the biggest political donors.

We get the policies they pay for. In blood.

Thinking is hard werk!

Too hard for some. Apparently.

If you don't know where you come from and how you actually got to where you are how will you ever figure out where you are going?

Don't strain yourself.

Happy Turkey day you big Turkey!

#14 | Posted by donnerboy at 2022-11-24 10:53 AM | Reply least we have a good story for the day of Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, people still want to be "One up on YOU!" And so we've had all of these wars. The USA preaches righteousness, but has slaughtered with A-bombs, Napalm, Phosphorous, etc. Look at Ukraine! This is still going on. The attitude "It's my way or the Highway" has cost millions of lives. And all over a little bit of land.

My wife nixed my idea of a traditional thanksgiving this year. I wanted to invite the neighbors over then kill them and take their land. She disagreed, primarily because she didn't want to have to do the dinner and socializing part first.

If you're Ukrainian it isn't a little bit of land it's home and Putin is trying to steal it and murder the people that live there.

Most of the Eastern Ukraine is Russian speakers with varying loyalties to Russia.

It's not so simple as you make out. There has been open civil ear in the Donbass for nine years.

Are the Russian speakers there Ukrainian?

If so, do they deserve equal civil rights or to be oppressed by the government in Kiev?

Russia is protecting freedom fighters.

Life isn't all clear and orderly,it's messy and ambiguous.

Ultimately, does the Donbass have the right to self determination or not?

If they do,the Ukraine needs to cede territory for them to be independent. Not just kill them and take their improvements for themselves.

I believe Russia has claimed that territory.

So, when are you going to call for Russia to cede territory?

Native Americans should establish their own 1619 day of remembrance.

And why is such a big deal made of landing by the Mayflower at Plymouth in 1620? Jamestown was established in 1607. Heck, some of my American ancestors were in America before any of the Mayflower passengers set foot on ground at Plymouth.
