Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Jesse Wegman: There is another, less-known solution in our Constitution to protect the country from [Donald] Trump: Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which bars from public office anyone who, "having previously taken an oath" to support the Constitution, "engaged in insurrection or rebellion" or gave "aid or comfort" to America's enemies. ... So could Section 3 really be used to prevent Trump from running for or becoming president again? As a legal matter, it seems beyond doubt. The Capitol attack was an insurrection by any meaningful definition -- a concerted, violent attempt to block Congress from performing its constitutionally mandated job of counting electoral votes.

"Your table is ready, Mr President (best Marylin Monroe voice).

"Right over here in Section 3, please!".

90 percent of his aides and associated testified under oath to all the many facets of how exactly he, "engaged in insurrection".

The other 10th took the Fifth.

The Electors were intended by The Founders to keep someone like Trump from becoming President.

Since they didn't do that, we should scrap the Electoral College and go to a direct democracy to choose the President.

There are many Democrats and Republicans who hope so!

Be careful what you wish for. Disqualifying Trump only strengthens DeSantis. I don't think Biden can't beat DeSantis.

The best hope for Biden is if Trump loses the Republican nomination and continues to run as an Independent, splitting the vote Perot style. That is still a long shot.

Democrats need to focus their efforts on finding a viable candidate to replace Biden. Might be too late already.

DeSantis is a wuss onstage, and unlikable by most people in person... Trump will bully him out of the building.

Besides, Trump disqualified himself by breaking the law; political consequences do not, erm, trump that fact.

I agree that Trump disqualified himself, but efforts to formally disqualify him from running are likely to backfire. For one, he won't be "in the building" to bully DeSantis.

As for unlikeable DeSantis, he swept Florida, running against moderate Crist. Florida is a swing state, to do that he had to pick up Some Democratic voters, so somebody liked him.

Dems are working hard to tear down Desantis, but simply destroying the opposing candidate is not a sure fire winning strategy, nor should it be. Democrats need to field a better candidate themselves.

Between now and the 2024 election Democrats need to pound Desantis by talking about his extremisn which in most polls most Americans disagree vehemently with him. Whoever makes the case that Desantis is an extremist opposed to women's rights, gay rights and opposed to our long standing principle of seperation of church and state and we should nominate a candidate that press him on those issues and reveal what a religious extremist he actually is. America does not want to be a theocracy so religious extremists should be considered as we would consider a freak show, we do not want the Christian Taliban running our country.

Is Trump Ineligible to Be President?

I think he's already answered that question.

Trump whined to some of his aids that he was surprised Biden won so, in reality, his entire campaign to undermine confidence in our elections is a dishonest sham he doesn't even believe himself.
