A navigation app that illuminates public land within privately held property has supercharged the question of who gets to go where.

Came across this problem all over the American West. Rich turd buys two acres near national forest, builds McMansion on the road and cuts of the access. Or, builds their property right down to a river or lake and cuts off access to the water. These people(the rich) can be parasites on public spaces. I use to live in Montana and on my weekend trips to find new unexplored places to explore I kept coming across these vampires on the public. One time seeking access to a national forest some woman came racing out to me on a quad and said I was trespassing on private property. I had a map that said this road, that the giant house was blocking, led to the National forest and showed her it. She said, "Mr. Mentos owns the mountain!" I said, "The candy guy and she said "yep"". It's funny though when a fire comes racing through they are more than happy for the serfs come through that road to fight the fire from burning down their ugly houses. Then, it is right back to, "piss off you locals that wish to go fishing, hunting or hiking to take a picture" once again. Funny how that works eh?

in my county there's a great piece of public land that's perfect for hunting.

problem is the public land is surrounded by privately owned land and the owners don't want anyone other than themselves and their guests setting foot on it.

We use this app to fly into remote locations to fish and hunt, the hoi polio just can't reach.

Wonderful app.

Rich turd buys two acres near national forest, builds McMansion on the road and cuts of the access.

Yeah this is a problem. But keeping this land, national forest is better. I keep seeing RWingers complaining about how much land the government owns, but keeping it public lets us visit it. Once infrastructure comes in, it's over, it becomes a Sims, Orvis Model show room.

So while I am against it, I am also a fan.

You can legally walk up the river, does cut off direct access to it, but its legal in most states to walk up stream, just can't go ashore.

If its big enough, fly into it... thats hat makes a good hunting, if it was easy access the hunting wouldn't be good.

Public access laws are a possible answer. Make access to public lands mandatory. The beaches in California are like that. A carefully crafted law could help a lot with stopping this kind of abuse of public resources.

Rich people often suck, they think they own the earth itself sometimes.

Private property is the basis of capitalism and the American way of life.

That's what will destroy us all if it goes too far.

The Commons are gone.

Access to everything is by the leave of our betters.

I'm sure the SCOTUS will affirm that soon.

They will be well compensated,I'm sure.

That's on the county planning people. They should have dedicated easement prior to letting land be bought all the way around.

Do you want people driving through your yard anytime they like? Now what will have to happen to settle it is the county will have to take land away from someone who paid for it and declare it ROW.

lived in Newport, RI while in HS many years ago. There was a beach called Bailey's Beach, probably the best on the island, Wealthy people claimed they had owned it for decades and kept it strictly to members of their Beach Clu. Turned out they did not own it but had just claimed it years before. Boy were they pissed when the court ruled that it was again a public beach. Sometimes, not often enough, the people win against the sekfish, greedy rich.

Here in Florida the rich can't claim beach below the mean high water line and have to allow access for the public to get down to the beach and yet we are still not a Communist dictatorship and capitalism still thrives gere.

Happened at Panama City Beach in the Florida panhandle. The rows of expensive townhouses pretty much have blocked off public access to the beach there.

The moment some redneck drove his truck across your lawn to put a duckboat in a technically public but completely surrounded by private land lake, and started transferring their shotguns from vehicle to boat, you'd go full karen and call the police. You'd even be within your rights, the firearms make it felony tresspassing.
