...But it will take time to replace a term that has been used for decades. The first human monkeypox case was recorded in 1970. The virus was initially detected years earlier, in captive monkeys. "Both names will be used simultaneously for one year while 'monkeypox' is phased out," WHO said. The announcement drew a mixed response from Dr. Ifeanyi Nsofor, a global health equity advocate and senior New Voices fellow at the Aspen Institute who has backed changing the name. "Mpox is better than monkeypox because it still contains 'pox', which speaks to the physical nature of the disease," Nsofor told NPR on Monday. Meanwhile monkeypox numbers are actually way down. Because gay men listened to public health information, got vaccinated, and adjusted their behavior. Imagine how many people would be alive today if republicans responded to covid that way.

How is "monkeypox" racist?
Wanting to rename it to me is actually what's racist.
Leaving it alone isn't.
I'm just curious.
Anyone who thinks this is racist wanting it renamed must be associating monkees with a race.
What race would that be?
Just leaving it alone just leaves it associated with monkees but not a race.
Bringing race into it is what makes it racist.
#19 | Posted by BillJohnson at 2022-11-29 07:40 PM | Reply
Hey BillJohnson.
It's not that it's racist.
It's thar the word "monkey" brings the racist moths to the racist flame. They just can't help being themselves:
"The international monkeypox outbreak drastically raised the disease's profile in Europe and the U.S., affecting more than 100 countries in all. And as the disease spread, public health experts say, so did the use of discriminatory language and images online."

Good of WHO to remind us how people think blacks look like monkey's.
For those who didn't know...now they do.
Good grief...people are strange.

"Monkeypox" is not racist.
The word "monkey" has racist connotations among many in the Republican Party.

Does no-one recall the pictures of Bush the W posted various places with the face of a chimp? Just looked at some images on the web, they were not uncommonly from The Guardian, that nasty conservative rag from England. As for recency about 60 years ago I was in a country where many people were quick to be offended by any perceived comparison to monkeys.

Good question. In part due ro a few particular posts and my reaction to them, also a long standing bias or sensitivity to presentations which I see as as only presenting one side of an argument or neglecting contradicting evidence or opinion. This seems to me quite prevalent in almost any source I read .

Is it Christmas in Hell, because I'm predicting a foot of snow! I 100% agree with every point. Hmmmmpox indeed, this re-naming was performed by an authoritarian national, imo. Someone who doesn't use English as a primary language, I'm presuming, or someone who - as has been pointed out - is "fanning a flame".
The irony being that NPR uses "monkeypox" throughout the article, rather than the changed language.
