12:15 p.m. Sunday

Following a conference call with county officials Moore County Commissioners chairman Frank Quis said the county was unsure when power will be turned on or when repairs will happen. He said the county "will be declaring a disaster declaration this afternoon."

County Manager Wayne Vest said it could be Tuesday before some residents see power restored. Unlike in ice storms, where some regain power before others, this damage is confined to the substations, meaning large groups of homes will come back online at the same time.

More from the cited article...

...The sheriff did not suggest what the motive might be, but a local conservative activist who organized a protest against a drag show said on Facebook that she was visited by deputies.

"I welcomed them to my home. Sorry they wasted their time," Emily Grace Rainey wrote.

"I told them that God works in mysterious ways and is responsible for the outage. I used the opportunity to tell them about the immoral drag show and the blasphemies screamed by its supporters. I told them God is chastising Moore County, thanked them for coming and wished them a good night. Thankful for the LEOs service, as always."

Two hours earlier, Rainey had posted the message: "The power is out in Moore County and I know why." And around the same time, she posted a picture of the Sunrise Theater, which was putting on the sold-out drag show, with the caption "God will not be mocked."...

... I told them that God works in mysterious ways and is responsible for the outage. ...

So, she thinks she is God's spokesperson?

Summary of Terrorism Threat to the United States (November 30, 2022)
www.dhs.gov

...The United States remains in a heightened threat environment. Lone offenders and small groups motivated by a range of ideological beliefs and/or personal grievances continue to pose a persistent and lethal threat to the Homeland. ...

In the coming months, threat actors could exploit several upcoming events to justify or commit acts of violence, including certifications related to the midterm elections, the holiday season and associated large gatherings, the marking of two years since the breach of the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, and potential sociopolitical developments connected to ideological beliefs or personal hostility. Targets of potential violence include public gatherings, faith-based institutions, the LGBTQI+ community, schools, racial and religious minorities, government facilities and personnel, U.S. critical infrastructure, the media, and perceived ideological opponents....

More on Ms Rainey...

Officer resigns as Army investigates her involvement in Washington rally that led to U.S. Capitol riot (January 11, 2021)
www.cbsnews.com

...A psychological operations officer who the Army is investigating for leading a group of people from North Carolina to the rally in Washington that led up to the deadly riot in the U.S. Capitol had already resigned her commission, CBS News correspondent David Martin reports. Commanders at Fort Bragg said they were reviewing Captain Emily Rainey's involvement in last week's events in the nation's capital, but she said she acted within military regulations and that no one in her group broke the law.

"I was a private citizen and doing everything right and within my rights," Rainey told The Associated Press on Sunday.

A Defense official told CBS News the Army is investigating how many soldiers from Fort Bragg accompanied Rainey to Washington. Rainey had resigned her commission after receiving a career-ending letter of reprimand for her actions at an earlier protest in the Fort Bragg area, Martin reports.

From what I heard, this has nothing to do with race; and everything to do about a drag show in the area. I am surprised that the USA is promoting homosexual marriages. I watched the PBS news report last Friday and was surprised to learn that the African American man on the panel was married to a man. I can understand women marrying women. But a man marrying a man? Drag shows in front of kids? God cursed Adam for his sin. If it was just Eve who ate the apple, we would all be in Paradise.

During a news conference Sunday, Sheriff Ronnie Fields said the shootings were unlike anything he had encountered in his four-decade career in law enforcement. They were "targeted" attacks, he said, carried out by an individual or individuals who "knew exactly what they were doing."

No suspects have been named in the shootings, and investigators have yet to announce a potential motive.

With credit to Yav, because that old "Chicago" deflection gets so tiresome:

The cities with the highest gun murder rates per capita are:
1. St. Louis, Missouri
2. Baltimore, Maryland
3. Birmingham, Alabama
4. Detroit, Michigan
5. Dayton, Ohio
6. Baton Rouge, Louisiana
7. New Orleans, Louisiana
8. Kansas City, Missouri
9. Memphis, Tennessee
10. Cleveland, Ohio
...
28. Chicago, Illinois
Indianapolis, Indiana is 23rd, and I mention them because gun laws in Indiana allow Indianapolis to have a higher rate of murder by gun than Chicago, where a lot of Indiana's guns end up. Indiana is the highest contributor. Mississippi and Wisconsin also manage to have cities in the top 50.

In just under 10 minutes, they disabled 17 transformers and caused $15m in damages.

'Targeted' N.C. Substation Gun Attack Comes Amid Escalating Critical Infrastructure Threats
www.hstoday.us

...Two power substations serving Moore County, N.C., were attacked with gunfire Saturday evening, leaving tens of thousands of residents without power and prompting the sheriff's office to declare a state of emergency and curfew tonight.

Sheriff Ronnie Fields said at an afternoon press conference today that the FBI is assisting in the investigation and security has been beefed up at substations. While the sheriff said a motive had not yet been established, electricity infrastructure is frequently cited as a prime target in domestic extremist materials and online posts.

"Folks, we're living in some challenging times," Fields said. "Challenging times that -- I never thought in my 40 years of law enforcement we would be seeing things ... and dealing with the things we are dealing with."...

Yeah, but I would say that unknown (or not) rampaging criminals (are they criminals before they shoot up schools?) shooting up schools is a very significantly more pressing problem than being shot by a family member (~a man's home is his castle~).

Two different types of problems.

I suspect, two different causes of the problems.

And I also suspect, two different types of solutions.

Let's not try to trivialize the destruction of our children in schools where they go to learn by equating that horrific crime with family disputes.

Probably more expensive, but possible.

Huh?

Please explain how, say, 40 vital units at one location could be destroyed with a knife, from outside the fence.

Genie Lift or a bucket truck. Really big knife on the end of a hydraulic ram. He did say it would be expensive.

Drones are just as much of a risk.

WHat do you do with religious people who are never wrong, armed with guns, and think they are more American than you?

True. But there have been over 600 mass shootings (4 or more injured/killed) so far in 2022.

How many were stopped by a civilian "good guy with a gun?" One? If that.

America is flooded with guns. Cities like Chicago, with a lot of cartel action, get flooded with guns stolen from irresponsible gun owners, or bought by straw buyes in any of the surrounding states with lax gun laws.

We need to arm sub-stations so they can shoot back. Kidding aside, I hope they catch whoever is doing this no matter what their ideological reason is and, I could be wrong but this does seem like an act committed by a fanatic of some kind. Perhaps a wild eyed liberal upset about the Don't Say Gay Law down here in Florida?

There are a number of ways to cause damage to equipment without being next to them or using guns. Some have already been alluded to in this thread. Do you think we can put all these genies back in the bottle?

"Seriously though our water and energy are wide open for an attack. There really is no economically viable way to prevent an attack."

Building opaque walls around power stations that serve this many people is probably a lot more economically viable than building ones across the borders.

Of course your guess is to blame liberals, despite all the facts against you, despite the law enforcement agencies concluding that right wing terrorists are the greatest threat to america right now.

You know that attacking the power grid is one of the favorite fantasies of white supremacists right? They chat about it online and have already done it in other places.

#106 | Posted by SpeakSoftly at 2022-12-06 01:37 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

I'd say it was likely to be some of the conservative far right militia groups or a loner. People get unhappy when their power is cut off, especially from acts of sabotage. It has long been a target (the infrastructure) for those groups plotting rebellion. Make the people unhappy with the new status quo. That's the aim.

This is why the FBI is on it. It threatens the government power base; it's authority, if it can't protect. The supposed consent of the governed becomes far weaker under these circumstances. Of course in any real threat to the authority, you'll see government branches showing up as well as the police force and if needed the National Guard. f

Face it, the country has been headed this way for a while. Two opposing ideological parties, neither willing to agree or compromise with the other side. In the end, this is the result. The hot heads will get out there and try it first, then hopefully more regulated yet supporting the same idea will come join.

We've been seeing a lot of violence lately, in schools, malls, public meeting areas, which have mostly been chalked up to the mentally unbalanced. Crime is rising in the big cities. People are starting to leave the same areas because of crime, inflation, and the huge overhead that cities charge to keep their infrastructure running, in the form of taxes. Not to mention that the cost of living in cities is much higher for much less.

Yeah we've been headed that way ever since rupert murdoch and roger ailes created a news network that fed delusion to suckers, and turned half of america into brainwashed suckers who live in an imaginary alternate reality where obama was a secret kenyan muslim and trump is a patriotic self made success story.

You can't have a coherent peaceful nation when billionaires like murdoch are brainwashing morons to hate their fellow citizens, instead of hating the billionaires who are actually causing the suffering.

I hope the people responsible are found and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. If anyone dies due to the power outage then charge them with murder.
I'm not going to venture a guess on who might be responsible for it. There are many groups that would have interest in committing such an attack.

I will add that Moore County is heavily republican. If it is a right wing group responsible as some have speculated then they are attacking a community full of people who likely share many of their goals.

A liberal with an AR-15, the right ammo, and with access to the information right-wing white supremacists groups share could have done this at the same time the drag show was going to start because that liberal wanted to create a false-flag operation to discredit the right-wing hate mongers!

Could be a right winger, could be a left winger, could be something else. The investigation will run its course. Or should we just scrap the investigation and demand a knee-jerk response based on an initial correlation? That's what you seem to be advocating.
