Explosions have rocked two Russian airbases far from the frontlines as Kyiv appeared to launch a pre-emptive strike on bombers that the Kremlin has used to try to cripple the Ukrainian electrical grid.

Sabotage by Russian citizens. Putin has a target on his back.

@#1 ... This war will only end when Putin croaks. ...

I would not put too much on that.

I've read that there are people lined up behind Pres Putin, people who have even more extreme Russian nationalism views than Pres Putin has.

Rise of Russia Hardliners Sows Fear In Putin's Elite
archive.ph

...The rise of outspoken hardliners in the Kremlin is alarming insiders fearful the Russian president will heed their calls for even more confrontation abroad and sweeping repression at home.

Senior business executives and government officials have watched with growing worryas players they once considered marginal like Yevgeny Prigozhin, known for his Wagner mercenary company and recruiting of prison inmates to fight in Ukraine, have become the public forces behind Vladimir Putin's push to step up his increasingly all-encompassing war effort.

Prigozhin's public calls for "urgent Stalinist repressions" against business tycoons who aren't sufficiently enthusiastic about supporting the war effort have led some rich Russians to fear for their own safety and that of their families, they said. Prigozhin's open attacks on top military commanders - some of whom have been subsequently removed - and the prominent Putin ally who is governor of St. Petersburg, have added to worry within the bureaucracy about the Kremlin's unwillingness or inability to defend its own....

And, fwiw, I know absolutely zero about the workings of Russian politics.

This was a warning.

Russia needs to pull it's forces far beyond the reach of these rockets or they will wipe out every Russian in reach.

@#5 .... This was a warning. ...

Indeed.

Russia says seized Ukrainian lands are under its nuclear protection (October 18, 2022)
www.reuters.com

...Russia said on Tuesday that four Ukrainian regions whose annexation it proclaimed last month are under the protection of its nuclear arsenal.

The statement from the Kremlin came at a moment of acute tension, with both NATO and Russia expected to hold military exercises shortly to test the readiness of their nuclear weapons forces.

Asked by reporters if the regions were under Moscow's nuclear umbrella, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "All these territories are inalienable parts of the Russian Federation and they are all protected. Their security is provided for at the same level as [it is for] the rest of Russia's territory."...

Russia doesn't have nuclear weapons any more than it had a terrifying army.

A fake country created from other real ones.

How are 'real' countries created?

Ukraine's borders have been internationally since 1991. Ukrainian de facto political entities struggling for their autonomy or independence had existed long before that.

Try not channeling your inner Vladislav Surkov. It's embarrassing to those that recognize Russian propaganda for what it is.

@#8 ... A fake country ...

So, your alias is going full Pres Putin propaganda now?

Apparently admitting what I have said of Pres Putin, that he does not think that the country of Ukraine should exist.

While it is good to see your alias (and the talking points issued to it) admit that, I gotta ask.... what took you so long to admit that of Pres Putin's intentions?

I mean, all that garbage about fighting Nazis in Ukraine, now your alias seems to admit all that was garbage.

That the real reason for Pres Putin's unprovoked invasion of a sovereign Ukraine for the purpose of annexing and eliminating Ukraine was exactly that.

Your alias has come a long way.

But the question lingers, will your alias be of the same opinion tomorrow? And the day after?

Or is this just yet another of its feints?

Yes askin'

Effete does on occasion offer his belief that Ukraine is full of Nazis and shouldn't have the right to exist. Probably after a cocktail or ten. That's when people tend to be the most truthful.

Not a super successful attack. The only thing visible from satellites is firefighting foam deployed on a single Tu-95. One turned up on Ebay once with a Buy It Now of only $5 mil.

I've always said Ukraine is an Ethnofascist state.

Why these -------- are a cause celebre is a mystery to me.

Like most fads this one will end too. Then the Ukraine will be left to the wolves.

The West is doing them no favors.

They're being used as bullet catchers in a game they don't even understand. Their whole country is being destroyed to help the West "contain" Russia, whatever that means.

When they wake up to to how they've been used they will realize Iraq has been used in a similar way by the US in the past.

That's because in case anyone forgot, you're either stupid or paid to pretend to be.

It's super hard for your brain to figure out why the world is rooting against the fascist tyrant who's been funding fascist movements and trying to destroy democracies across the globe, who locks up or poisons his rivals, who murders or vanishes reporters, who jails homosexuals and installed a russian agent in the white house.... and YOURE still struggling to see why everyone took ukraine's side.

A Tu-95 was on ebay?

I think the takeaway from this, at least from the RUS perspective, is that what they considered the "rear" can still be ranged by UKR weapons.

"I've always said Ukraine is an Ethnofascist state."

I didn't really know what that was, so I had to google it.

Ethnofascism is a system where race and ethnicity are the sole determinants of whether one is a legitimate member of the state.

Where do you see this occurring in UKR?

I think you'll need to find another reason to keep justifying the Russian invasion.

I almost feel like you once had a Ukrainian girlfriend or boyfriend who broke your heart, and that is where this is all coming from. You seem to have a new excuse daily about why UKR is bad, but none of them really make any sense.

A fake country created from other real ones.

All countries are created from other ones.

The US was created from British, French and Spanish land.

Those were created from Seneca, Iroqouis, etc nations.

If that is true then the Russians are justified in destroying Ukraine now. We did it to create America. Why can't they do it to enlarge Russia? If all countries are a product of violence then violence is appropriate now.

"Make the Russians in Ukraine pay for speaking that mongrel tongue."

I don't know that the government of Ukraine ever tried or cared to wipe out Russian culture in that country's borders.

In fact one of the largest Russian speaking regions is Odessa, over in the far west of Ukraine. And those Russian speakers have been outspoken in their support for their country.

As have the Russian speakers in Estonia. And I suspect Latvia and Lithuania as well, although I have not seen it myself.

Yet I doubt that would stop Putin from using the pretext of protecting Russian speakers as a pretext for invading...even if those Russian speakers wanted no part of Russia.

I can't say fer sure, but I doubt there are many Spanish speakers in the US who would prefer that they be governed by Mexico. And Mexico isn't a fraction of the monster that Russia is.

There are hundreds of thousands of Russian speakers that fled Russia during the mobilization.

Now he has the pretext to invade Georgia, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Kazakhstan...

...There were even a couple of Russian speakers who fled across the Bering Straits in Alaska.

Putin has his work cut out for him protecting all these Russian speakers...

"Power to the Etnhofascists. Go Zelinsky, you're the Man!"

Why is it you're still here and not supporting your team on the battlefront?

Are you too poor to buy a plane ticket and the equipment required to be a combat soldier? I mean, the fact that Russia is too poor to properly equip its troops means the costs fall to them.

Check this out bro, I'm sure you could crowd fund your way into a first-class ticket to whatever Russian jumping off point you wanted, with money left over for some world class kit. And that's just by soliciting from the people who post here.

But as best as I can tell, the ones who are the most pro-Russian are the ones sitting behind keyboards. The ones in the trenches are the ones who would prefer to be somewhere else.

...so trade places.
