I almost had to do the same thing some years back.

Laws exist to help society.

In situations like this do what you must let the lawyers argue months later when no ones lives are in danger.

I love that he left a formal apology letter.

Seems like this guy would have a shot at necessity defense. Not that he'll need it since the chief of police called him a hero, and no prosecutor in his right mind will go for charges.
