Garland assigned U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois John Lausch to find out how the classified material ended up at the Penn Biden Center. The review is considered a preliminary step, and the attorney general will determine whether further investigation is necessary, including potentially appointing a special counsel.

Lausch was nominated to be U.S. attorney by former President Donald Trump, and he is one of only two current Trump-era U.S. attorneys still serving. The other is Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss, who is leading an investigation into the president's son, Hunter Biden.

You know what else happened in February 2017 (actually January 2o, 2017)? Donald Trump, who is a proud graduate of University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business, became president:

You know what else happened after Trump became president? His daughter Ivanka was granted a bunch of Chinese patents:

The Chinese government granted a total of 41 trademarks to companies linked to Ivanka Trump by April of 2019--and the trademarks she applied for after her father became president got approved about 40% faster than those she requested before Donald Trump's victory in the 2016 election, according to a new book by Forbes' senior editor Dan Alexander.

On March 29, 2017, Ivanka Trump, the eldest daughter of President Trump, became an official government employee, joining her husband, Jared Kushner, as an adviser to her father.

The day before that appointment, Ivanka applied for 17 new trademarks with the Chinese government.

Over a span of two months in late 2018, the Chinese government granted 18 trademarks to companies linked to President Trump and his daughter. In October alone, according to the Associated Press, China's Trademark Office granted provisional approval for 16 trademarks to Ivanka Trump Marks LLC. The new approvals covered Ivanka-branded fashion gear, including sunglasses, handbags, shoes and jewelry, as well as beauty services and voting machines. In January of 2019, China granted Ivanka's company preliminary approval for another five trademarks covering child care centers, wedding dresses, and art valuation services. The applications were filed in 2016 and 2017.

"The flurry of donations may be related to first son Hunter Biden's business interests in China, the National Legal and Policy Center, a Virginia-based watchdog, alleged in complaints sent in May and October 2020 to the Departments of Education and Justice."

If we are going to have discussions and investigations about how the off-spring of presidents may have benefited from their fathers' positions, then let's do it, and let's include Jared Kushner and the 3 Trump siblings while we are at it, and let's expand the discussions and investigations beyond China.

What we know so far:

While both presidents may have mishandled classified documents, the Trump investigation-- which is now being handled by Special Counsel Jack Smith--involves potential obstruction of justice. At this point, it appears Biden is complying fully with investigators.

As Sauber noted, the National Archives hadn't requested these documents from Biden. Instead, his team quickly alerted NARA of their existence. In contrast, NARA reportedly spent more than a year trying to retrieve materials from Trump after he left office. They found 184 classified documents, including 25 "top secret" documents, in 15 boxes of materials retrieved from Mar-a-Lago in January 2022. Months later, the Trump team turned over 38 more classified documents in response to a grand-jury subpoena--but the Feds came to believe that that they weren't complying fully. The Justice Department obtained a warrant to search Mar-a-Lago in August and recovered hundreds more classified documents.

All we know about the Biden classified documents so far is that they supposedly cover non-nuclear topics related to Ukraine, Iran, and the United Kingdom. Trump reportedly had a plethora of extremely sensitive documents in his possession, including information on a foreign government's nuclear capabilities and intelligence gathered by secret human sources.

Trump's abject willful mishandling and obstruction clearly set him apart--and argue for criminal charges.

During the Clinton email investigation, we identified *every* time DoJ had charged someone with mishandling classified. Ever.

4 categories emerged: intentional mishandling, vast quantities, a foreign power, or obstruction.

None applied to Clinton.

At least 2 apply to Trump.

It must be exhausting having to constantly defend this administration.

Biden's lawyers found the documents, and what did they/Biden do? Tell no one and transfer the docs to a new box, then move them to a new location? Rip them up and throw them on the floor for others to discard? Flush them down the toilet? Toss them into the fireplace and burn them? Eat them? No, they/he turned them over to the NARA the next day. Realistically speaking, they didn't have to and no one would have been the wiser, but they did the right thing. It's not, however, what Trump would have done, did do. And, yes, all of the alternatives I listed are things Trump or someone on his team have been credibly accused of doing with his presidential papers. Apples to apples? I think not.

I didn't realize classified documents were found mixed with clothes in storage closet at MAL or that 2 classified documents were found in November, 2022 when Trump's lawyers searched a storage unit he owned in West Palm Beach:
