Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Friday, January 13, 2023

Kit Walsh: According to leaks reported last week, the company that owns Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) is planning to revoke the open license that has, since the year 2000, applied to a wide range of unofficial, commercial products that build on the mechanics of Dungeons and Dragons. The report indicates that this wouldn't simply be a change going forward, but would affect existing works that relied on the license. The old license would be revoked for existing uses, and people who have used on it will be forced to adopt new terms or renegotiate with the company, Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of game giant Hasbro.

Never have understood Dungeons and Dragons. Sounds really goofy to me.

#4 - Laura, I'm with you on that...until very recently.
I was part of the wedding party for a friend who got married this past fall. Instead of a typical bachelor party he wanted a cabin & kayaking weekend with the groomsmen. The first night there he sprung a surprise on us. He broke out a pro wrestling themed version of D&D. Most of us had no interested but he insisted because it was his party, plus we were in the middle of nowhere with nothing else to do. He was the only one of us who had played a D&D game before. Turned out we had a lot of fun. Creating these fictional characters and then roll playing them really encourages imagination/creativity. After a couple nights of D&D he said now that you guys seem to enjoy it how about a reoccurring session. Now we all meet up a couple times a month and I get to forget about all the work stress and home obligations, hang out with close friends and escape into the world of Groucho Man Dandy Ravage. OH YEAH!

Kids who grow up playing dungeons and dragons are infinitely more imaginative than kids who grew up playing video games and watching tv.

Dungeons and Dragons is the basis for almost the entirety of the role playing game industry, including video games. Leveling, classes, inventory, stats, spells, it's all there.

Top tier titles like Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic are essentially D&D in space.

You still know how to play a game don't you?

It's an adventure game and all it requires is an imagination and willingness to play together with others in an actual group (not virtually).

I haven't played TTRPGs with actual physical people since 2015. Technology has moved past it, now you can play the game with anyone, anywhere in the world, from the comfort of your own home.

I'm ticked. I'm sending my 18th level assassin. I'll sort this out.

Virtual is just not the same. And did you used to play in uncomfortable places before 2015? That was probably not really necessary. But maybe it added a different dimension to the game.

I started playing D&D in 1976 at the age of 9, 2 years after the game was created by G.G. in 1974. My brother gave me the original boxed game set for Xmas that year. One of only 2 decent gifts he ever gave me
(grin).

Anyhoo, played it for about a decade (until becoming more interested in girls in high school). Then droped it for 25 years, and now just started
playing again with my son (now in college), my
nephew (45 and a happily married father of 2 daughters), and one other local player. We play online,
once a month. It is probably one of
the most maligned and harmless games in history.

Although the Netflix series Stranger Things does
it justice. Most overly Christian types are still
crazy scared about it. Which is okay, because I feel the same way about zealous 'Nutter' Christian types.

It is pretty goofy. That's the fun part. The only limit is your imagination.

It's not much different than playing with little green army men. But since there are multiple players, there needs to be rules.

It is part strategy, part creative thinking
(thinking on your toes), and part character
acting. I think it's a great game and
entertaining. However, there are examples
where people have become addicted to it,
and spend far too much time, effort, etc...
on it. As with most things, moderation and
diversity of interests in life are a good thing.
