"Religion has convinced people that there's an invisible man ... living in the sky, who watches everything you do every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a list of ten specific things he doesn't want you to do. And if you do any of these things, he will send you to a special place, of burning and fire and smoke and torture and anguish for you to live forever, and suffer and burn and scream until the end of time. But he loves you. He loves you and he needs money."

George Carlin

"I think we're part of a greater wisdom that we will ever understand; a higher order, call it what you want. Know what I call it? The Big Electron. It doesn't punish, it doesn't reward, it doesn't judge."

For all Carlin's talk of atheism he sure was religious.

Religious about what?

#4 | Posted by snoofy at 2023-01-15 10:10 PM | Reply

The big electron.

Religious to you means nothing more than believing in something.

I'm religious about the order of the letters in the alphabet.

That's what you're saying.

"a greater wisdom that we will ever understand"

It's intelligent.

#7 | Posted by Tor at 2023-01-15 10:31 PM | Reply

What is intelligent, Tor?

#8 | Posted by snoofy at 2023-01-15 10:42 PM | Reply

Carlin thought the big electron was.

Some people are damaged to the point they can't handle the idea of God without picturing a white man who lives in the clouds.

It seems Carlin was and then healed.

Thinking something is intelligent means you're religious?

No you proved that.

Tor is worth talking to.

I picture nothing specific.

Astronomical events I guess?

Carolyn pictured a giant electron.

If you have no specific idea of G-d, what the ---- do you believe in, and accuse others of believing in?

#15 | Posted by snoofy at 2023-01-15 11:12 PM | Reply

Tell your G-d why.

I see no point in having a fixed image of a being who's shape is not fixed.

#17 | Posted by Tor at 2023-01-15 11:24 PM | Reply

You can't even say what you believe in.

That means you don't believe in anything.

#18 | Posted by snoofy at 2023-01-16 10:11 AM | Reply

No it doesn't.

What is the definition of work? A mom can relinquish her duties on Sunday? An air traffic controller does not have to work on Sunday? Firemen, cops and soldiers will not have to work on Sunday? What about good Friday no work then either? What about the other religions what days do they need off too? Not much going to get done if hyper religious folks fill all the jobs that entail working on the days they need off during the week.
If you do not wish to work on Sunday or any day of the week because of your religion then you should either change your religion or your job as some jobs require people to work on Sunday no matter what. The postal service seems to need people on Sunday especailly since they are now carrying much of the Amazon spill over packages as my brother the postal service worker tells me as he works Sundays all the time now because of all the Amazon stuff..

Good news everyone!

Because I believe in the letter Y.

So my beliefs require that I not work for anyone else on any days that end in Y.

I love it. The lunatic religious fringe is trying to insert their beliefs everywhere in our society and all Tor worries about is the opinions of a dead comic.

Mailmen, like pharmacists, get a veto on whether or not women get birth control, right?

Comrades! Let's be clear about one thing. Your profession is work only if you think it is work. You've got to get your mind straightened out like in the book "1984". The only people who can live a good life are the top capitalist 1%. The rest of you have to kowtow to your capitalist lords like they did in ancient China. And even the top capitalist 1% are suffering. You think Priscilla Presley, for example, had a good life. You have to face the music. You have to realize that in the USA it is "Trickle-Down!", "One up on YOU!", "The other side of the door", and "The back of the bus!" For example, who of you right now would want to be Biden, Trump, or Santos?

Nice. I'll take Biden for $400,00. What about Obama? Are you a racist Comrade? (Of course you are if you are Russian. Silly me.)

Obama is enjoying a great retirement being with his family and windsurfing in Hawaii and making documentaries and hitting the lecture circuit when he feels like it. No lawyers needed because he is under no investigations and has no court cases to respond to. Much to you Pooty Pants lovers chagrin.

One thing is certain. No one wants to you ... whining about democracy and blogging nonsensical crap all day for few rubles ... probably not even you.

#25 | Posted by donnerboy at 2023-01-16 03:59 PM | Reply

Obama only took a break from retirement to dunk on Herschel Walker and his bizarre interest in werewolves.

If you apply for a job as a sub mailman, don't be surprised if you end up being asked to work on a sunday.

This country has really lost its way. And it's going to get a lot worse.

I agree. Worker agrees to work on a weekend and once it includes a Sunday, then that's not okay?

go work somewhere else where you don't have to work on Sundays.

Interesting that separation of church and state has come to mean subordination of state to church.

Congratulations, Republicans!

My concern with cases like this is it can open the door for all sorts of religious accommodations.

Some of them are insidious and just an attempt to spread (force) their beliefs onto others.

Considering the amount of medications that are now mailed perhaps they should be given Sunday's off so long as there isn't a far greater need than usual.

Or they could just not get paid for not working that day.

#33 | Posted by Tor at 2023-01-16 06:42 PM | Reply

Snoofy,

I don't automatically agree with things just because they use the word Christian.

I'm surprised this would even make it to the Court. The poorly ran restaurant I worked at when I was 16 was able accommodate my frequent requests off for speed skating meets and baseball tournaments. I see no good reason why the post office with all of their resources can't make a reasonable accommodation for a regular day off for religious observation for an employee especially after they accommodated that need for years. It was dumb of USPS to let this case get this far. Now the face having to live with whatever ramifications may come from this case.
