proclaiming any racial or ethnic group is inherintly moral or immoral because of the actions of their ancestors is in it's self immoral.

and white washing the histories of such groups is just pathetic.

If people want to learn about slavery in America they might want to start by reading 12 years a slave rather than watching the pc crapfest film.

And if they want to know about the plight of black people in the south clear into the 1960's Black Like Me is a good staring point.

Historians should be deciding whatPt's cynical should be taught not politicians, such as Nixon with jis Southern Strategy who used white resentment of Civil Rights to propel him to victory in southern states, now it looks as though Desantis is hoping to use the same straregy. Want to see what bad public education gets you? Come to Okiehomie. Employers in the state are screaming for engineers, and the state's colleges cannot make enough of them. College grads are often leaving the state, either to return to their home states (most often, to Texas) or for a better quality of life. With a little luck and some effort, Florida could well become the Oklahoma of the Deep South, which is not something about which to boast...

"White people fought a civil war to free Black slaves."

Some white people fought a war to preserve states rights (to own slaves).

The rest fought a war to preserve the Union (and then later to end slavery).

And even though slaves were technically freed in 1863 they could not live freely until 1964.

Even then they were still subtly discriminated against.

Since CRT is the study of the disparate outcomes based on race. Do you agree that different races experience different outcomes?

We are not talking about the strawman you build. We are talking the factual definition of CRT.

In fact, CRT generally dismisses the cause as simple racism. It considers systematic causes, you know the remnants of the structural and legal racism enacted in the past (slavery, segregation, red lining as a few examples).

that is it. So either you don't think those systematic problems exist or you have a stake in protecting those systems

Yes CRT does study that.

For example:
It examines why certain Asian groups (Chinese 1st and 2nd generation, South Korean, Indian, Vietnamese, Japanese etc.) experience different outcomes-for example it examines how differing immigration policies from Asian countries impacts success rates-i.e. some immigration policies encourage inflow of familial groups and the educated vs. those fleeing war zones (causing less familial and community structure) and how those different immigration policies effect success.

Hint a group that is generally educated, with family structure intact, with wealth that immigrates will be more successful than a group that was enslaved, with their families destroyed (or prevented) for generations (until slavery was dismantled), then for 100 years segregated and legally denied economic opportunities.

Productivity vs Wages: The Curve that Ended the American Dream
therealignment.wordpress.com

Having lived through the heyday of 'good jobs', I have to ask- Was slavery ended, or simply expanded?
What's the difference, if one can earn only enough to survive?

Slaves were furnished with housing, food, medical care, family leave, and old age care.
Employees are furnished with a diminishing subset of these. Any shortfall is supposed to be adjusted by taking from other employees via taxes, thereby lessening financial exposure of the employer/owner.

The scare mongering and moral panic was centered on the FALSE notion CRT was being taught in high school. It's not and that quote you offered underscores this fact. CRT is typically covered at the graduate level. Again, this is nothing new yet you choose to push a false narrative. Why is that?

Then there is the visit by Africans to South America during the reign of Atlantis. There is also the contention that the human race originated in Africa. That's a completely different course you dolt.

This thread is about an African American AP studies course. Probably above your mental capabilities though as it is an "advanced placement" course. You'd have to be able to pass the regular courses first.

"Whiteness is white supremacy.

A couple thousand years of European imperialism is White Supremacy.

There is no white food,

Of course there is. Fish and chips. Blood sausages. Brain and kidney pie. Bangers and mash. Shepherd's pie. Corned beef. Haggis. Corn syrup ...

there is no white music.

There's polka, classical music, river dancing.

Whiteness is just the dehumanization of everyone else,

That's a result of European imperialism.

that ----- got to go.

Not if any of you xenophobic racists have anything to say about it.

Be a decent human being...

You MAGAts have proven yourselves to be anything but decent human beings.

Just stop ganging up in this oppressive whiteness and terrorizing the world.

Most recently we waged a war of terror on the Middle East. For 20 years.

There simply is no good way to be white. Just stop.

You poor poor victim.

I think every person graduating high school should at least know what CRT actually is, and what it is not. Seems like something we would at least want every fairly educated person to be to describe accurately, even if in only general terms. A person wants to go more in depth should be able to do so if they so desire. Maybe that is where college levels courses come in.

Part of the reason I write the above is that it is clear to me that so many of the people protesting the loudest against CRT do not even accurately understand what it is. They lack even the basic foundation of what the topic is about, without even getting into particulars or specifics. The term 'CRT' has become a dog whistle for right wingers.

The people who created this course are not "entitled" to taxpayer funding. They are trying to sell a product and right now Florida isn't buying. Cancel culture is where an online mob (usually woke and left wing) target an individual for their views and attempt to destroy them by lobbying to have them lose their employment and toxify them to prevent alternate employment. Further to attempt to make the individual guilty of wrongthink a pariah in their own community. It's turbo charged cyber-bullying.

Do you disagree with the content of the curriculum?
Or do you disagree with teaching it in a college-level high school class?
Or both.

(This should be taught in the standard high school curriculum, by the way.)

Donner, that quote ---------- posted is an opinion piece that has a good many interesting and valid points to make and use flaming rhetoric to get "attention"

Primary thesis is that white culture has been colonizers and oppressors (i.e. White Supremacy) and the definition of white culture is malleable to allow for the oppression of others and there is no parallel brown or yellow Supremacy. Underlying the inflammatory rhetoric is pretty standard anti-colonialism doctrine.

Keep something in mind.

this is an AP course, something that is essentially voluntary to students (an elective you might say).

An AP course on African American history should, in my mind, cater to the values and interests of the student body it will be taught to. I think of the Irish American history course I took in college. they discussed Irish American history with an emphasis on I-A culture, literature, immigration, assimilation, struggles.

Seems to me an AP course should be geared to the AA experience-and things like reparations and LGBTQ in the Black culture are certainly significant areas of interest.

nothing like a little perspective I suppose.

Correct (to an extent), (not of what you are aware of, I have no idea what that would be-seemingly limited), but yes the Bible is not studied as doctrine.

Now, let's consider CRT

1st of all CRT is a science so, that should be the end of the discussion.

but I will allow further discussion

CRT is not "indoctrinating" which is what you and others have advocated. It simply isn't.

It starts with a scientific truth. Different races have different outcomes.

It asks the question, why.

It recognizes additional truths, that there have been systematic racist policies in effect since the inception of our country and long before that-slavery, segregation, redlining.

It studies the complicated and interrelated impacts of these historic systems.

There is nothing in there that is "indoctrination", there simply isn't.

Reparations are a topic of consideration, as is Black feminism, as is the relationship between blacks and LGBTQ. These are areas of discussion and Florida has ruled them ineligible for discussion.

Based on what I read the criticism of the 4 th quarter material is it doesn't meet scholarly standards. Taking a political stance requires multiple viewpoints. Who should have control over school curricula?
#146 | POSTED BY BELLRINGER

There should be a Common Core, which is suitable for all students capable of mainstream education, to ensure students receive a worthwhile education regardless of where they went to school.

Of course, each individual school will also make their own contributions. But the public school system should be standardized enough so that when students move from school district to school district, as happens when their parents relocate for work, it doesn't keep them from graduating on time.

From Heritage again:

Taylor sees capitalism as synonymous with racism, and she argues that any successful struggle against racism must ultimately replace capitalism as well. Taylor also dismisses "colorblindness" as a ploy to disguise the racism inherent in the capitalist system. (This view of colorblindness is excluded from Florida's curriculum by law.)

I assume that there aren't pro-slavery and pro-segregation arguments in the 1st 75% of the curriculum.

Compare that to something that Florida rejected-The state says intersectionality " which refers to the way various forms of inequality often work together and build on one another " is foundational to critical race theory and "ranks people based on their race, wealth, gender and sexual orientation."

but you see intersectionality does not do what Fl is saying it does. Intersectionality is the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender as they apply to a given individual or group, regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage.

What does that mean? A poor black woman will have different disadvantages than a rich white man. Seems pretty straight forward to me.

So a poor black woman faces overlapping and interdependent impacts because she is poor because she is black and because she is a woman. That will be different for a poor black man, who may face the same impacts for being poor and black but completely different for being male-i.e. significantly higher incarceration rates.

So, no, there is nothing remotely controversial about teaching intersectionality, except it makes people like you uncomfortable, because then you have to acknowledge you as a middle class white male have advantages over a poor black woman. And people don't like that.

And don't bring the specious argument of the Obama daughters, this is about the general not specific individuals-point being the general experience of a poor black woman vs a rich white man.

What Florida has done is to limit these topics as part of a public school curriculum when other resources are deemed more valuable to the students such as reading and arithmetic. With public school education resources are finite and priorities need to be set. You may disagree with the priorities as I may. Nevertheless public schools do have limited resources and much to Joe's chagrin sometimes people be despises have been given some power by the voters to control some of these resources.

It's still very weird to even think about discussing sex or gender with a K-3 child. There are so many other things that would need to be discussed first. It could take years to get to teach that subject properly. I am sure it has happened once or twice where the subject has come up at that age but it's got to be extremely rare.

But I do wonder if a child asks a gender related question what's a Florida teacher to do? They have to tell the child that because they are living in Florida that question is illegal to answer? Call the parent for a parent child conference? Make the child report to the principal's office? How could a child even begin to understand any of that without thinking they did something wrong?

Its not even a problem yet they just made it one.

It's just plain weird. But that's our republicans!

Historians should be deciding what's cynical should be taught not politicians, such as Nixon with jis Southern Strategy who used white resentment of Civil Rights to propel him to victory in southern states, now it looks as though Desantis is hoping to use the same straregy. It's very cynical and dishonest as most Floridians know he is.

Tricky Dick Nixon, the Dbag to top them all, initiated a two-pronged attack, to wit, Black people AND White Hippies. Nixon was losing to anti-war protesters over Vietnam and back home to the Black Panthers. Hardhat Whites and Southern Segregationists were portrayed as the heroes, and Blacks and Hippies were the enemies of the people. I would be amused to find that grass ever grew anywhere near Nixon's grave. Nixon's final ignominy gives me a grin EVERY time it comes to mind.
