Explainer: Swedish and Finnish hopes of quickly joining NATO have run into an obstacle in the form of objections by Turkey, which holds veto powers over accession to the military alliance.

More from the article...

...The three nations reached an agreement on how to proceed in Madrid last June, but Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has said Sweden, in particular, is not keeping its side of the bargain.

This week, Erdogan postponed accession talks indefinitely.

Of NATO's 30 members, only the parliaments of Turkey and Hungary have not yet ratified entry for Sweden and Finland, which are worried about their security after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

WHY DOES TURKEY OBJECT TO SWEDISH AND FINNISH MEMBERSHIP?

Turkey says Sweden, in particular, harbours what Ankara says are militants from the banned Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which took up arms against the Turkish state in 1984.

The PKK is designated a terrorist group in Turkey, Sweden, the United States and Europe....

DOES TURKEY HAVE ANY OTHER GOALS IN BLOCKING ACCESSION?

Elections take place in Turkey in May. Some commentators see Erdogan's stance on NATO as an attempt to divert voters' attention from a cost-of-living crisis and to project an image as an international statesman.

Other commentators say he may want to use NATO ratification as part of a deal with the United States. Ties with Washington are strained by Turkey's conflict with Syrian Kurdish militants who have U.S. support in the fight against Islamic State.

Turkey also wants to buy F-16 fighter jets from the United States, but faces objections from some members of Congress....

Biden needs to read Erdogan the Riot Act. Boy is increasingly out of compliance.

I knew this would would happen. Turkey will never allow Sweden to join NATO.

That's been on obvious from the jump. All the reasons given are excuses.

He's in the bag for Putin. I've been saying so all along.

Throw Turkey out. Finland and Sweden are much better partners.

That is would be very dumb. Then Turkey would Ally officially with Russia giving them access to the southern black sea. Also a staging area for missiles aimed at Europe and the ME.

Other benefits would be the precedent of having fractured NATO for political reasons.

Just a real loser of an idea.

You're right. The best way to deal with Turkey is to remove Putin from power. Then Erdogan will have no one to split his allegiance. Erdogan's "in the bag for Putin" as you say, so Putin's illegal war against Ukraine should be used to hang both Erdogan and Putin by taking Putin out. Excellent idea!

#6 | Posted by YAV at 2023-01-26 07:17 AM | Reply

Erdogan is not in the bag for Putin. Erdogan is leveraging the situation to demand an end to US support for Kurds in Syria. It's entirely about self-interest.

A NATO hegemony requires both Greece and Turkey in its alignment to control Black Sea naval access into the Med. This is the consequence of that alignment and occupying a portion of Syria.

Erdogan is leveraging the situation
Ye, they just want their rusvet. And they will probably get it.

How much leverage does he really have, though? Is the Russian Black Sea fleet an actual thing to fear? Wouldn't it just find the bottom of the Aegean in short order? Turkey out of NATO would be bad for us, but it would be really really bad for Turkey. They'd be kicked out of the EU trade deals. The UN would still hold them to the Montreux Convention. Their NATO status is the only thing protecting them from the Germans, Kurds and Greeks.

@#7 ... Erdogan is leveraging the situation ...

Yup.

Throw in his upcoming re-election hopes, and he needs something to distract the public's attention away from the Turkish economy.

Turkey is holding things up because Russia wants them to and in their position their best interest is to try to triangulate an equilibrium position.

Turkey's pinterst is ensuring tipping that one way or the other will take a long time to happen, and by then things might have worked themselves out.

Turkey wants everything to just Simmah Dahn.

The fact that Erdogan is cut from the same ideological cloth as Putin is just circumstance.

#14 | Posted by snoofy at 2023-01-28 05:57 PM | Reply

Turkey is close to Russia. Erdogan is smart not to be dragged into a war with Russia on account of Sweden and Finland. He is one of the few people in the world with brains.

#15 | Posted by wolfdog at 2023-01-28 08:14 PM | Reply

Why would Sweden or Finland joining NATO result in Turkey being dragged into a war?

If Turkey is dragged in, it's because Putin attacked a NATO country. Which really means you don't think Erdogan wants Finland or Sweden to join because you think they are going to be attacked by the Soviets, and he would rather avoid that fight.

Is that what you are saying, pup?

I'd rather have and trust the Finns and the Swedes in NATO than Aragon's Turkey who seem more like our enemy.

I'd rather have the Finns and Swedes in NATO than this ass clown Erdogan's Turkey who actually seem more like our enemy. He came to Washington DC and had his goons attack people peacefully protesting his presence in the US. His army whacked hundreds of the US Kurdish allies in Syria who did the vast majority of the heavy lifting in our battle against ISIS where they lost thousands of male and female soldiers. If they had not fought his war, American forces would have had to do so instead. This Erdogan ------- is a fascist fake religious nutcase that would be better off in prison for his crimes against humanity rather than having a voice in deciding Finland and Sweden's entrance into NATO.

Unfortunately Turkey controls access to the Black Sea and Finland and Sweden do not.

I'm glad turkey is part of NATO and all but do they not realize that if Russia conquered Ukraine it will take control of the Straits as well?

Tor,

Protestors burned Qurans.

Everything comes second to worshipping the Quran.

Bill what did you think Muslims did with qurans that were damaged Beyond repair?

Tor,

I think Turkey won't be able top back down from resisting Denmark.

They alliance to Islam is greater than their alliance to NATO.

It appears they aren't put in the dump. They are given proper burials.

No kidding...what's what it says.

If you're read my posts, I've said I believe Christians sometimes elevate the Bible to a point is becomes an idol.

The Bible is not God. Worshipping the Bible should not be a substitute for worshipping God which I believe I have observed.

I believe the Christian God is alive and is not the Bible itself.

Erdogan might approve Finland's NATO bid, shock' Sweden
apnews.com

...Turkey's president has suggested his country might approve Finland's application for NATO membership before taking any action on Sweden's, while the Turkish government issued a travel warning for European countries due to anti-Turkish demonstrations and what it described as Islamophobia....

At one end turkey has two Maritime Neighbors at War and at the other it's got a neighbor which is experiencing unrest and another which is filled with American soldiers. It really is about time that turkey acts like it's part of Europe and helps drive out the invaders.

@#29 ... It really is about time that turkey acts like it's part of Europe and helps drive out the invaders. ...

I do not disagree, but with an election on the horizon, Turkiye may have different goals for its current Head of State seeking reelection.

How better to show the power of the current Head of State than to pick a fight with NATO?

#30 | Posted by LampLighter at 2023-01-29 11:40 PM | Reply

Why?

Because Putin wants them to.

It's not. It's muslim. And everything NATO is about is anti Islam. I dont know who thought it was a good idea to let Turkey into NATO.

I dont know who thought it was a good idea to let Turkey into NATO.

The US Military and the CIA were the biggest advocates.

NATO isn't anti-Islam... EU is.

NATO is anti-Russian. Always was.

what did you think Muslims did with qurans that were damaged Beyond repair?

Burial at sea.

Boaz,

Rather than anti-Muslim I think westerners are anti-sharia law. Well...that and them blowing stuff up.

Other than that I think there would be less concern about Islam.
