The guidelines would set action levels of 10 parts per billion (ppb) for lead in fruits; most vegetables; mixed meals, including grain and meat-based mixtures; yogurts; custards and puddings; and meats.

The government is getiing in the way of us feeding our kids lead! What kind of ------ nanny state BS is this??

Good thing we didn't dust the entire planet with lead for a half century with leaded gas.

That could have been a real disaster for future generations that our grandparents cast a blind eye to because of how convenient life is when you drive a car!

#2 | Posted by snoofy at 2023-01-26 11:15 AM | Reply

Just make it zero ppb and then no one could possibly comply. Win-win.

#3 | Posted by visitor_ at 2023-01-27 02:56 AM | Reply

Why do that, high lead does are healthy and nutritious, look what it did for Margie Trailer Queen, Heil Gosar and Boobert.

We all know you ate leaded paint chips as a child. It shows in your comments.

I'm pretty sure he's still snacking on them.

As you pointed out, there's no where on this continent that hasn't been contaminated with lead. In some areas the lead is natural. We can regulate any level we want, down to zero. But that doesn't mean that it's possible achieve or economically affordable.

#9 | Posted by visitor_ at 2023-01-27 01:01 PM | Reply

conomically affordable.

#9 | POSTED BY VISITOR_ AT

And the shareholders wouldn't like it if it wasn't "economically affordable.

Therefore, "nothing can be done..."

If you've perfected a method to remove background traces of lead from agricultural products at an industrial scale, you could own this market. Most parents won't be able to afford $500 dollars an ounce but that's not the FDA's problem. Joe will have to create more money from nothing and it will be free?

#11 | Posted by visitor_ at 2023-01-27 11:15 PM | Reply

@#11 ... If you've perfected a method to remove background traces of lead from agricultural products at an industrial scale, you could own this market. ...

Exactly.

Your comment does not seem to question the bad effects of lead upon our children.

So why haven't the agricultural corporations embraced that concept, i.e., reducing the lead content?

Or does Capitalism take precedence over the welfare of our children?

[serous question]

So what you're saying is that if sustenance was a human right and not a way to turn a profit is that it would work itself out?

You should write your congressional representative and tell them how you feel.

What did your mama feed you growing up? 10 ppb is near the limit of measurability. Only very large corporations will have a lab capable to measure lead at that level. Concentrating food production into fewer sources didn't work out for baby formula. But you do you.

@#15 ..What did your mama feed you growing up?...

Nice deflection.

I have asked your alias, directly,

...Your comment does not seem to question the bad effects of lead upon our children.

So why haven't the agricultural corporations embraced that concept, i.e., reducing the lead content?...

and all I see on your alias' next visit to this most august discussion site is ignorance.

Why does your alias seem to be so afraid of answering the simple question I posed in #12?

And now I have an additional question ... why does your alias seem to think that a display of ignorance is a valid response to a question?

[another serious question]

#16 | Posted by LampLighter at 2023-01-28 12:15 AM | Reply

I think you maybe ignorant of the difficulty in removing background traces of an element at the limits of measurability. You probably couldn't understand my comments at 11, 15 and this one.

"What did your mama feed you growing up?" Is a serious question.

#17 is seriously pissed because the government is trying to get in the way of parents allowing their kids to consume neurotoxins.

Because the shareholders.

Has it occured to you that complying with this regulation might not be possible? Did your mama remove all the lead from your strained carrots? What was her secret, it could be worth a fortune.

#19 | Posted by visitor_ at 2023-01-28 12:38 AM | Reply

Why isn't it possible, #19?

#20 | Posted by tres_flechas at 2023-01-28 12:40 AM | Reply

The answer isn't capitalism, is it?

The shortened answer, of course.

The long answer would be something more like "because of years of denial of the obvious through misinformation campaigns to preserve the bottom line", etc.

But that's just kind of how capitalism flows, in'nit?

How long have we known lead was toxic, #19?

What about arsenic, #19?

How long have we, as a species, known that arsenic would kill another human being, #19?

What about lead, #19?

When was the first known case of lead poisoning, #19?

#23 | Posted by tres_flechas at 2023-01-28 12:56 AM | Reply

#20 Because science? If there's lead in the soil, there's going to be traes of lead in what's grown in that soil. Capitalism has nothing to do with it, Communists couldn't remove traces of lead at that level either. If you don't want aresnic in your food, avoid cherries.

2000 BC, #19.

We've known for over 4,000 years that lead is toxic.

I understand that learnin' ---- isn't your thing so I figured I'd tell you.

Your lead addled ass is welcome, #19.

I wonder how many people in the land mass that is currently call the USA died from drinking water before capitalism.

I s'pose they just needed to capitalism more if they wanted the water they drink to kill them..

#30 | Posted by tres_flechas at 2023-01-28 01:57 AM | Reply

You've won me over. We should ban all the things. You should know that there is no way to remove lead from food to 10 ppb. So all of the cropland contaminated with lead will have to removed from service. That's about 15 to 25%. The farmers owning that land can learn to code. We'll use socialism to make sure the loss of farmland doesn't affect the food supply.
