They have been indicted.

The bodycam video is bad, maybe the worst we've seen. I expect there will be civil unrest all over the country.

It's not just the violence that sparks civil unrest, it's the institutional cover-up of said violence that really pushes people over the edge.

That factor is lacking here, hence I doubt people will burn and loot like you're so clearly hoping will happen

"Bury it in the weekend..."

It is an old tactic if you have to release news that makes you look poorly.

Release it late Friday when everyone is focused upon the weekend, and not focused upon the nightly news.

I won't be able to watch the video. Just hearing about it is upsetting enough:

Angry Staffer
@Angry_Staffer
I'm watching the #TyreNichols video, and this is absolutely disgusting.

Officers are holding his restrained body up while another officer punches him repeatedly in the head and face.

Give them all first degree murder. Every last one of them.

This wasn't an attempted arrest. This was a murder. They were actively trying to injure him.

I would recommend that a lot of folks don't watch this video. Absolutely brutal.

Please

Let's be honest about this BS:

If this guy hadn't died, it wouldn't be on the news.

It would be just another police brutality case that no one would be talking about except maybe a few lawyers in a civil case. It would just be another one of thousands of police brutality cases.

And Conservatives will bend over backwards to pretend this is an isolated incident by talking about race and justifying it any way they can. CNN and MSNBC will just ignore the prevalence of just-short-of-lethal police brutality and have a bunch of idiots talking about how wrong this is.

And this will continue to happen with police killing 3 people per day in the US, black, white or any other race. That's 3 times more people per capita than any other advanced nation.

As much as the effort was to bury the video, in this instance the video will survive.

@ElieNYC

This Memphis video of the lynching of Tyre Nichols must be awful. Basically everybody who has seen it is like "Please don't riot when you see this like you probably should." I've never seen a reaction like that.

I feel like people who are *surprised* that the cops who did this are black are about to learn a part of "the Talk" that my parents at least always emphasized: The race of a cop is "cop." *Never* be under the illusion that a Black cop is less likely to brutalize you or kill you.

My interaction with Black cops have always been as potentially fraught as my interaction with white ones. At no point does "help a brother out" work. Because if they were really trying to "help" me, they wouldn't have stopped me in the first place.

OK, let's talk about that aspect.

In some respects, I do not disagree.

Another view, if a brave person had not recorded and posted the video of George Floyd being killed, what would have been the outcome of that event?

Your comment seems to be hitting upon a theme...

Someone has to be documenting as dying before police injustice is brought to justice.

Is that a correct summation?

Gal,

I think this particular incident has something to do with it being Memphis.

Memphis has been ranked as the most dangerous city in the United States, according to a 24/7 Wall St. study using FBI statistics.

They acted this way knowing they were recorded!

Tyre Nichols did nothing wrong. Nothing.

There's no excuse for what happened. Prosecute these 5 to the fullest extent of the law and chase up the responsibility to those in power above them that gave them the impression they were untouchable.

Abolish Qualified Immunity now.

Also ANY police doing what these 5 did should get the same treatment - immediate arrest and loss of their job. None of this 3 years investigating, dragging feet, and maybe a slap on the wrist crap.

Police need to be held to a higher standard - not a lower one.

#1 | POSTED BY SPEAKSOFTLY

White cops executing black people = paid suspensions, gaslighting, lost bodycam footage and cover ups
Black cops executing black people = terminations, condemnation at every level in the media ahead of video release and criminal charges

If those cops had been white all we'd be hearing from the boot lickers is how Tyre Nichols tried to hug a classmate in first grade without their consent, got detention in Jr High and that he recently posted a link to a rap song on social media. They'd be telling us how Nichols reckless driving (that investigators found no evidence of) could have injured children (whiteness implied) so even though police over reacted it was mostly justified because he should have just complied with commands while they were being pepper sprayed and holding him up while they beat him.

#50 | Posted by eberly at 2023-01-28 09:20 AM | Reply

I watched the video. Horrid.

A few questions.

1. Why were they SO AGGRESSIVE on the initial stop?
2. Why did it take them so long to handcuff the guy once they got him? I kept hearing "Give me your hand". WTF...cuff him already. Keystone cops.

It's almost like something else was going on - as in maybe this kid knew someone that the police were not happy with, etc. and they were coming after him from jump street.

A point about police. They are hired/trained incorrectly and underpaid (for what they have to do). Ask any cop you may know and trust, he'll tell you there are guys doing the job that shouldn't be even close to the job.

#51 | Posted by brass30 at 2023-01-28 10:10 AM | Reply

#50 - It might from defense attorneys but at this point, for the most part, even boot lickers have been quick to condemn. They won't backtrack on that because angry black men. If anything they'll use this to justify future brutality by cops. Next time a white cop walks away free from a murder they'll tell us how it is justified and that the system must not be corrupt because the Tyre Five were quickly charged.

"They have to learn TMI about the seedy side of human beings."

So do doctors priests and lawyers and so do veterans of foreign wars and many many others.

Many humans learn about how cruel humans can be to other humans.

That does not excuse anyone especially professionals supposedly paid to serve and protect from treating others inhumanly as they may have seen others do.

The choices we make in life are our own. And we are responsible for those choices.

These men are being held accountable for their choices. Not what they may have seen in life.
