We are on the edge of a spy scandal with major implications for how we understand the Trump administration, our national security, and ourselves.

If someone as important as [FBI special agent Charles] McGonigal could take money from foreigners while on the job at FBI New York, and then go to work for a sanctioned Russian oligarch he was once investigating, what is at stake, at a bare minimum, is the culture of the FBI's New York office. The larger issue is the health of our national discussions of politics and the integrity of our election process.

MFA:

The reporting on this so far seems to miss the larger implications. One of them is that Trump's historical position looks far cloudier. In 2016, Trump's campaign manager (Manafort) was a former employee of a Russian oligarch (Deripaska), and owed money to that same Russian oligarch. And the FBI special agent (McGonigal) who was charged with investigating the Trump campaign's Russian connections then went to work (according to the indictment) for that very same Russian oligarch (Deripaska). This is obviously very bad for Trump personally. But it is also very bad for FBI New York, for the FBI generally, and for the United States of America.

Another is that we must revisit the Russian influence operation on Trump's behalf in 2016, and the strangely weak American response. Moscow's goal was to move minds and institutions such that Hillary Clinton would lose and Donald Trump would win. We might like to think that any FBI special agent would resist, oppose, or at least be immune to such an operation. Now we are reliably informed that a trusted FBI actor, one who was responsible for dealing with just this sort of operation, was corrupt. And again, the issue is not just the particular person. If someone as important as McGonigal could take money from foreigners while on the job at FBI New York, and then go to work for a sanctioned Russian oligarch he was once investigating, what is at stake, at a bare minimum, is the culture of the FBI's New York office. The larger issue is the health of our national discussions of politics and the integrity of our election process.

A lot of Russians hanging around, here and elsewhere. Mar-a-Lago is one such elsewhere. Weak, greedy, narcissistic, and traitorous men (most prominently someone who was actually president) tried to bring us down and are still trying.

As I read the article, the first paragraph your comment quotes is one that came to the fore for me.

Again...

Could that be why Mr Manafort worked on fmr Pres Trump's campaign without a salary, i.e., he did that work to repay his debt?

This is why garland is such a failure. It was obvious to anyone with eyes that russia has its hands in the republican party and is using it to take own america. Garland was too worried about upsetting fascists to protect us from them.

Absolutely and unfortunately true. Biden needs to wake up and We executed the Rosebbergs appoint an aggressive AG to go after traitors and we, as a nation, need to demand the ultimate penalty from them. We executed the Rosenbergs. Execution should never be off the table for traitors.

And thanks to Gal Tuesday for posting probably the most important article ever posted here which most folks won't even bother to read.

Fact is that a lot of people are disappointed in the USA comrades. There are so many people voting today that your vote in this so-called democracy has little value. I vote anyway comrades. Why? Because it is something to do. But the USA politicians have their favorites. And the best jobs go to White Anglo-Saxon Protestants and the Hebrews of Israel. For the rest of us it is "Trickle-Down!" and "One up on YOU!" as we read the gossip magazines about the royalty of England. Yup! Sure must be hell being a Christian or a Muslim in Israel these days. Think it's unjust? Well if you voice your opinion; you'll get Einstein, Teller, and the Holocaust thrown in your face. Hey! I hear Iran just had drones from Israel thrown in their faces.

Your country is such a pathetic failure that your last resort is hiring losers to post nonsense on american news sites. Sad things is russians are actually intelligent people. What a waste of human potential. Overthrow your tyrant and give yourself a better future.

Just a tale as old as time.

Money is power and power corrupts.

We used to have safeguards against such things when you held a high level clearance. Someone (Trump?) probably removed them.
