"The Education Department did not publish that training until January, leaving school librarians across Florida unable to order books for more than a year."

Hahahaha.

The plan is for public school libraries to wither on the vine and only carry the narrow selection of right-wing books published by DeSantis cronies and whitelisted by DeSantis.

If books aren't on the whitelist, they are de facto blacklisted, and having them in school is grounds for felony prosecution.

Rom Desantis is a Nazi! I honestly hate him. His goal is to drag this state (nation) back to the 1950's. As if the 1950's were actually a better time in America. I wish COVID on that anti-vaxxer idiot, I sure as hell don't want that fool to ever occupy the WH. Never elrct anyone who wants to rewrite history, that is usually the goal of tyrants like Hitler and Stalin.

Here in OKC employers struggle to attract talent from outside the area, because schools in Okiehomie stink on ice. Boeing engineers, data scientists and other smart folk are loath to move here. Children of university faculty folk end up in the local charter schools for the really smart, away from the local high schools. With his actions in Florida, DeathSentance is creating a similar economic environment. All those smart finance folk moving to Florida will soon enough have a hard time attracting employees, for the same reason i see out my kitchen window. Florida's economy is starting a long downward slide ...

STOP LYING!!!!

THE "CONTENTIOUS" NEW LAW HAS NO CRIMINAL PENALTIES. PERIOD.
What they are talking about is books that violate PORNOGRAPHY statutes, which ARE NOT NEW.
If you are a teacher, and you have a book on your shelves which just might be PORN, you just might want to take it off your shelf. Not that complicated. Not new.

Now, to clarify, the new law does require books in classrooms to meet district guidelines, and that process is undergoing and not proceeding smoothly....BUT THERE ARE NO CRIMINAL PENALTIES! Prior to this, there were NO guidelines, teachers were allowed to bring in whatever books they wanted. I beleive most teachers would employ good discretion in choosing appropriate books to share with students, but I don't think it is unreasonable to have guidelines, and again, there are NO CRIMINAL PENALTIES!

Unless the books qualify as PORN. Also, the porn statute has exceptions for books with educational materials, so the bar is pretty high.

Is Gov DeSantis intentionally degrading Florida for his short- and mid-term political aspirations to the Oval Office?

Asked differently, s Gov DeSantis selling the future of Florida down the road for the benefit of his own hoe to occupy the Oval office at some time?

OK, good, something more specific.

Does the law in question specify exactly what those guidelines are that have to be met?

The reason I ask is that the law dubbed "Don't Say Gay" was notoriously ambiguous in what did and did not pass muster according to the law.

... BUT THERE ARE NO CRIMINAL PENALTIES! ...

So this law seems to be intended with harassing teachers with legal fees?

More importantly, if there are no penalties, what is the real purpose of the law?

How about be a grownup and acknowledge that the headline is a lie, yes, the premise of the thread is a lie, because there is no need for teachers to hide their books to avoid a felony charge. Unless those books are PORN, in which case that has nothing to do with the new law or Desantis's picture, because the PORN law was passed before he was BORN so yes, the entire thread is a lie.

Does it even bother you a little bit that mainstream media has no hesitation to spread stories that are easily proven to be completely untruthful? It bothers me.

There are hundreds of articles repeating the same lies about what the law says. But not a single article that provides a link so you can read the bill yourself. Why do you think that is? I dunno, you read the article and decide. This teacher said it was to "make a statement"

Don Falls, who teaches government and economics at Manatee High School, told CNN that teachers were told they could box up their personal classroom libraries, cover them up or enter the books into the district's cataloging system in order to check their approval and keep them on shelves. He has opted to cover his books up with chart paper. "I think it's a stronger statement to cover them up. My students have asked me what's going on, and while I did not go into a lot of details, I let them know about the restrictions that have been placed on the books that have come from the district by way of the state."

Wow, I never realized how dishonest you were until this moment.

This month school officials instructed teachers in Manatee and Duval counties to either remove books from classrooms or cover them up with paper sheeting until the districts come up with a way to ensure that none of the reading material ran afoul of the new law.

It's a 5 year sentence if they do run afoul of the law, and DeSantis has made it pretty clear he doesn't mind making an example of voters or companies that annoy him.

#37 | Posted by Alexandrite at 2023-02-02 12:56 AM | Reply

Teachers who don't make sure their books pass DeSantis's muster are risking up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine for displaying a forbidden book, which is a third-degree felony.

Read the source material, whcih includes the relevant state statutes, the websites from the relevant counties, and the video from Duval County which is informative (though it also contains a couple inaccuracies about the law). Only then will you realize how many glaring errors there are in this poorly researched article, and outright lies.

Let me be clear. I am not fully in support of this new law. There are parts of it I disagree with. But the media misinformation campaign about it is pretty horrifying and damaging in its own right. From YOUR quoted article, teachers have deliberately covered up or removed their books in lieu of following district guidelines to "make a statement" and told kids their books were taken away resulting in the children crying and writing protest letters to the principal asking to please give back their books. That is emotional blackmail. This process began in July and teachers have had opportunities to have books pre-approved, or to select books from an approved list. This month they entered a new phase requiring those approvals and some of the schools and some of the teachers got behind the eight ball

Here's the paragraph:

School officials in at least two counties, Manatee and Duval, have directed teachers this month to remove or wrap up their classroom libraries, according to records obtained by The Washington Post. The removals come in response to fresh guidance issued by the Florida Department of Education in mid-January, after the State Board of Education ruled that a law restricting the books a district may possess applies not only to schoolwide libraries but to teachers' classroom collections, too.

House Bill 1467, which took effect as law in July, mandates that schools' books be age-appropriate, free from pornography and "suited to student needs." Books must be approved by a qualified school media specialist, who must undergo a state retraining on book collection. The Education Department did not publish that training until January, leaving school librarians across Florida unable to order books for more than a year.

The new law comes atop an older one that makes distributing "harmful materials" to minors, including obscene and pornographic materials, a third-degree felony " meaning that a teacher could face up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine, a spokeswoman from the Florida Department of Education said Tuesday. She suggested violating House Bill 1467 might yield "penalties against" an educator's teaching certificate. Still, because of uncertainties around enforcement and around what titles might become outlawed, school officials have warned teachers that their classroom libraries may expose them to the stiffest punishments.

Where is the "lie"?
