Iowa Bill Would Ban SNAP Recipients from Buying Meat
A bill introduced earlier this month in the Iowa Legislature -- the country's top red meat-producing state -- would ban people on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) from buying meat and a lot of other typical grocery foods as well.

...The bill, House File 3, has 39 co-sponsors in the Iowa House and is led by House Speaker Pat Grassley, a Republican. Pat Grassley is the grandson of Iowa U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, the longest-serving member of the Senate Agriculture Committee -- the committee that writes the farm bill, including SNAP rules, in Congress. Under the bill, SNAP recipients would be restricted to buying foods that are approved under a separate USDA food-aid program, the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. WIC requires aid recipients to buy from a specific list of approved items that includes staples such as infant formula, cereal, milk, bread, juices, canned foods and baby foods. The problem with the food stamp program is that some people live in food deserts and the only place they can get food are convenience stores and liquor stores that charge an arm and a leg.
The funds they need have to also be distributed equally to people that don't live in food deserts.

Well they aren't buying surf and turf with SNAP so you don't have to worry about that.
40 cents of every SNAP dollar is spent on basic items like meat, fruits, vegetables, milk, eggs and bread. Another 40 cents of every dollar is spent on cereal, prepared foods, dairy products, rice and beans. 20 cents of each dollar is spent on a broad category of junk foods that included sweetened beverages, desserts, salty snacks, candy and sugar.
Gracie is the exact type of cruel individual that Jonathan Swift had in mind in 1729 when he satirically suggested that poor people sell their children as food for the more economically privileged.

ChatGPT, Do republicans have proof of extensive SNAP fraud to buy filet mignon and lobster?
No, there is no proof of extensive SNAP fraud to buy filet mignon and lobster. While it is possible for some SNAP recipients to misuse the program, the vast majority of SNAP benefits are used to purchase healthy, nutritious food. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which administers the SNAP program, also sets strict limits on the types of food that can be purchased with SNAP benefits.

ChatGPT, What is PETA's stance on preventing SNAP recipients from buying meat?
PETA does not take an official stance on preventing SNAP recipients from buying meat. However, PETA does support the idea of providing healthier, plant-based options on the SNAP program to give people more access to affordable, healthy food. PETA also supports initiatives to help people transition to a more plant-based diet, such as providing resources and education about healthier alternatives.

I was never on SNAP.
When my dad was almost killed by a drunk driver we landed on food stamps until he could get back to work.
Let me tell you, people on SNAP are not buying lobster and filet as those benefits are a set dollar amount per week and if you use it up on one meal you don't eat for the remainder of the week. It barely buys the bare necessities to survive. Name brand baloney is too expensive for it.
"In fiscal year 2023, after the likely end of temporary measures, we estimate SNAP benefits per person will average about $186 per month, or $6.10 per person per day, "
So do tell me who is buying a $20 per pound lobster or $40 per pound filet?
This just more b u l l s h o t from the GQP... the "cadillac welfare queen" baloney of 2023.

It comes down to a question of how wisely someone is spending the SNAP money. If you buy a lot of candy and soda, you might not have enough money to spend on more nutritious options like eggs and milk, and with the price of eggs and milk these days, that's probably a given. Likewise if you spend a lot of money on lobster and porterhouse steaks, you likely won't have enough money left to buy hamburger and chicken for the rest of the month. That said, if someone wants to splurge as Laura said for a special occasion and is willing to eat rice and beans or PB&J for a week to compensate, that is their decision. The potential problem would be selfish parents who might buy the good stuff for themselves and skimp on what they buy for their kids.

And it is extremely clear that none of you volunteer with any organization that deals with underprivileged children. Because if you did, you would be well aware of the rampant abuse of snap benefits by the adults left in charge of these children. They are sent home with backpacks on Friday filled with canned goods so they can eat over the weekend when the school cafeteria is closed. It got so bad with one organization. I never said all recipients of snap cards abuse the privilege. is no abuse is ludicrous and quite frankly, if you think there are no abuse is going on with food stamps there's really no point caring on this conversation.

Its not already state by state, what you can buy with SNAP?
Feels like Republicans would never have agreed to that...

WIC is definitely more restricted than SNAP, that's for sure.

Gracie I'll make you a deal. If you can faneggle a ring on It then and only then can you demand what I do. And if I am so stupid as to allow it I'll deserve your ire. Until then Buzz off.

SNAP Is a federal program, like WIC, and not mandated state by state.

Who gives a shht what they buy?
Conservatives represent the literal worst qualities in a person.
Shut up Gracie and go back to spending your husband's money.

I think I was thinking of the supplemental food security program in California. Where most fast food restaurants have signs WE TAKE EBT.

I care what they buy.
Why should my tax dollars go to pay for soda when they're likely to consume too much of it and I will have to pay a second time when they end up with diabetes?
Frankly I'm more at peace with their being able to buy steak every other month.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which administers the SNAP program, also sets strict limits on the types of food that can be purchased with SNAP benefits.
Well, that's exactly what's happening, what are you whining about?

Ironic that Gracie, who lives off of her ex-husband's pension, is whining about someone else who gets benefits.
I mean, if she didn't spend his pension money ... OMG! She'd have to get a job!!!

I don't understand the issue snap and wic are both finite benefits distributed monthly as I understand the program. Who in the sweet Jesus cases if they spend every dollar of it buying a porterhouse and a lobster tail then spending the rest of the month eating ramen noodles? Maybe it's their granddad's birthday and they want to get him a treat to eat? It doesn't drive the cost up, it doesn't take any more tax money to fund. They are given money so they don't starve because this country treats its poor and ESPECIALLY its elderly and poor, like hot garbage. Let them be.

#5 | Posted by gracieamazed at 2023-01-31 08:18 PM They get $XX/month to supplement their diet. How they use it and when they run it out are up to them. I'm certainly not going to deny someone a nice special occasion meal. If they want a couple of steaks, but have to eat beans and rice the rest of the month, it's on them. Stop with the nanny state crap you folks allegedly loathe.

The Sad Hag doesn't care about "the children" she cares about shaming and controlling the choices of poor people she doesn't know. She's a sick bitch with no life and no class. Her " gratitude" is virtue signaling of the most tiresome and stupid variety.
I hope she chokes on her own vomit.

In reality, the FNS will permanently disqualify any retailer from the program whose transaction data even shows a whiff of any indicator of fraud, including repeat transactions, high dollar transactions, transactions out of scope with other retailers in the area, etc. In the real world they are overdisqualifying retailers who haven't even engaged in fraud, merely for not fitting a pattern. And yet ------- like you continue to scream about "abuse."
