He shouldn't be charged. Everybody involved knew they were playing with guns including the person that volunteered to stand in front of it. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

That's like saying everyone in the car knew they were riding with a drunk driver, so the driver shouldn't be charged in the death of their passenger who was killed in the crash.

Pretty much. I don't think they have much of a case. The AD already signed a plea deal.

Does it really matter? Many criminals who commit a crime bad enough to be covered by the media has past violent arrests and they are out walking the streets. Nothing will happen to him since violent crime has not been normalized and accepted. He may go to jail for a night but then he will be out free forever after that.

No, a weapons specialist concluded that the gun Baldwin used could not have been fired without pulling the trigger. Baldwin is a liar.

I'm glad people are being charged in this killing. We should do the same with all "accidental" shootings. When it comes to guns there are no accidents, only negligence.

I tend to agree.
Playing with guns has very predictable consequences.
Those consequences deserve actual consequences, not just thoughts and prayers.
I see no problem with charging the shooter -- even as in this situation it sure seems like someone else needs to be charged, and hopefully that is the eventual outcome here.

I think if anyone gets convicted of anything it will be the armorer. She has a few good arguments, but it was ultimately her responsibility to be sure the gun was safe.

You roll the dice, you take your chances. It's like saying if two people engage in mutual combat, and somebody gets 1 punched killed, oh well. Don't engage in mutual combat. Don't play with guns. Don't ride with drunk drivers.

#15 | Posted by sitzkrieg at 2023-02-01 01:51 PM | Reply

It's not accidental like, I was cleaning it and killed a neighbor next door. It was a completely predictable event when people intentionally play with guns where all involved were consenting parties to playing with the guns and trying to make it look cool on camera.

#16 | Posted by sitzkrieg at 2023-02-01 01:52 PM | Reply

where all involved were consenting parties

Much like on Yellowstone, where you have a bunch of actors that had never been on a horse before pretending they are cowboys.

Oddly enough, the live ammo that found it's way to the Rust set likely came from the production of 1883.

"It was a completely predictable event"

Including the part where the person hired to be responsible on the set told the actor he was handing him a prop?

Check your firearm is the #1 safety rule because so many people have been shot or shot something or somebody that it became the #1 safety rule. So many things and people have been shot because somebody didn't check a gun they were handed that it should be treated as a universal constant, like gravity.

You can make all the protocols you want to lower the frequency, but empirically, somebody on occasion will die from a gunshot wound during television and movie production.

Unless we stop fetishizing guns, but I'm super uncool and thing gunfu movies are stupid, so what do I know.

That's a question that has bugged me since this occurred...

How in the world did a loaded gun get on the set? Was there a need for a loaded gun anywhere on the set during thie scene being filmed?

Why was the loaded gun there?

No. Live rounds were banned from the set, but some still got there. They have not determined how. The supplier was requested to provide them with 3 different blank loads, and dummy cartridges.

That day's shoot called for dummy rounds in the morning (when the incident occurred) while filming close-ups, and then blank rounds in the afternoon when they filmed the actual "gunfight".

"Check your firearm is the #1 safety rule "

In 99.99% of the places and cases.

Now do on a movie set, after the armourer has shown you the gun disassembled, assembled it, called "cold gun", and given it to the actor to shoot you. For extra points, tell us if you'd ever get a callback for a movie again after demanding a review like that each time.

The person responsible has already taken a plea, admitting he didn't do the basic requirements before making a pro-active proclamation as the set's chief safety officer. Basically, his statement was, I checked the gun, but I didn't check all the cylinders.

(Narrator: Boys and girls, that means he didn't check the gun.)

"You can make all the protocols you want to lower the frequency, but empirically, somebody on occasion will die from a gunshot wound during television and movie production."

A lot less often than the general populace, in large part because of the protocols.

One idea doomed to fail: leaving safety decisions up to the dumbazz actor hired for the role.

before making a pro-active proclamation as the set's chief safety officer.

As a follow up, he is now saying he didn't. He says someone else called it a "Cold Gun", not him. Others say it was him and he is the only one that ever used that term.

LOL

That reminds me of the time Pinche said when a retaining wall fails at some fracking site and spills fracking water, the pollution wasn't caused by fracking.

In Second Amendment terms it's okay we can't ban guns, so we will ban bullets!

Having read the Assistant Director's statement in admission of guilt, he who certified a "cold" gun, I would say Baldwin is clear. Armorer - not so much.

I would put my money there. The armorer's main argument was that she also had secondary duties as a general prop assistant that took time away from looking after the firearms. She raised that concern to her superiors and they basically told her to just suck it up.

#33 | Posted by REDIAL at 2023-02-01 05:36 PM | Reply

All she had to do was prioritize. Armorer job first.

I heard when they got back from lunch, the guns hadn't been locked up.

"They" made it quite clear she was not to do that. The set was pretty messed up from a gun safety standpoint.

Problem with that on the set is if you unload the gun it goes back to the armorer to get reloaded and you are right back to where you started.
