Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Rather than killing off the virus we are all turning into incubators of variants one of which will eventually pose a threat far greater than the original covid-19. There are ways we can fight this though.

We've been helping bacteria evolve by over-using antbiotics for decades...

I appreciate what experts have to say.

And in that context, vaccines and anti-viral treatments, despite their obvious life preserving benefits, have created conditions under which the virus is evolving rapidly.

This is complete BS.

Antivirals only drive mutations that decrease antiviral efficacy. In the case of Paxlovid, a protease that isn't inhibited by Paxlovid.

Vaccines don't drive immune evading variants any more or less than infection-acquired immunity. The virus doesn't have any way of knowing what the source of immunity is/was in a host it's replicating in.

I think what we're seeing is the reaching of equilibrium. The virus' evolutionary space isn't unlimited and in the US we're seeing most recent waves are more like ripples.

The author may not think so. But the reality of human nature says that unless people start dropping at a substantial rate, humanity will not make the sacrifices necessary to do much about it. COVID may finally become the control in human population growth that the planet needs.

@#5 ... I appreciate what experts have to say. ...

I also.

As such, I'd suggest that the links in the cited article (to the what the experts say) be followed and read, as the author of the article seems to have some interesting interpretations of what the experts say.

Covid is smarter and more evolved than the GOtP apparently.

Let's be a bit more specific about who the "We" is in this article. Some of "Us" did our part to prevent the spread and mutation of Covid, while others intentionally promoted its spread and mutation. I think we all know who's who.

People mock gamers but the truth of it is they may be preppers for a real life "The Rest of Us" or "HalfLife"...

Since the annual flu also mutates from year to year.......

#14 The flu is also getting better at infecting other types of animals -- able to jump to more hosts than humans, birds, pigs, and horses.

There is no doubt that we are helping flu evolve through farming pigs and birds. "We" largely being China.
