The balloon has Hunter Biden's laptop in it.

The Chinese billionaire is sending it to DC for JFK Jr to use when he ushers Trump into the Oval Office to resume his second term.

China's foreign ministry has expressed regret over what it called a civilian balloon straying into United States airspace. In a statement on Friday, the ministry said the balloon suspected by the US of conducting surveillance was a civilian "airship" used for research, mainly meteorological purposes. The statement said the airship has limited steering capability and "deviated far from its planned course" because of winds.

Sec of State Blinken has postponed his trip to China to talk with Pres Xi.

Mystery balloon discovery over Montana cancels US China trip
apnews.com

...Blinken had been prepared as late as Thursday to travel to Beijing this weekend but the administration had begun to reconsider the trip following the discovery of the balloon on Wednesday, even before its presence was made public, an official said.

The official, who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, said the administration had " noted" China's expression of regret.

)The senior defense official did not address whether the U.S. accepted that it may have been a weather balloon instead of a surveillance one, as U.S. officials had previously described it. But, he said, the seriousness of the violation of U.S. airspace, sovereignty and international law was such that Blinken's trip could not go forward as planned.

The official called the presence of the balloon "unacceptable" and said that message had been delivered by Blinken to Chinese State Councilor Wang Yi on Friday....

Chinese surveillance balloon over US causes fearful gasbagging
www.theregister.com

...Floats over missile silos, shooting it down ruled more dangerous than whatever it's up to

A Chinese high-altitude surveillance balloon, spotted drifting over the US, has caused concern about national security " but the Department of Defense says it will not be shot down by F22s at this time.

"The United States Government has detected and is tracking a high altitude surveillance balloon that is over the continental United States right now," read a statement from Pentagon press secretary brigadier general Pat Ryder. Ryder said the balloon was carefully being tracked by North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and does not currently pose a physical threat.

"Instances of this kind of balloon activity have been observed previously over the past several years," said Ryder, adding that the US government had taken immediate actions to protect against collection of sensitive information....

Reaction to the balloon having hit the US military's radar has, predictably, generated much criticism of the Biden Administration's approach to national security and US borders.

But the Pentagon has pointed out the balloon is ... erm ... full of hot air.

"Currently we assess that this balloon has limited additive value from an intelligence collection perspective," said the senior defense official. Although the balloon is clearly for surveillance and flying over sensitive sites, the official position is it likely does not provide any more value that what can be collected from a Low Earth Orbit satellite, and its tech is not "revolutionary."...

Also in the article is a few citations of how the Internet is [humorously?] viewing the matter...

An update...

Chinese balloon now over central US as Blinken cancels visit
apnews.com

...A huge, high-altitude Chinese balloon sailed across the U.S. on Friday, drawing severe Pentagon accusations of spying and sending excited or alarmed Americans outside with binoculars. Secretary of State Antony Blinken abruptly canceled a high-stakes Beijing trip aimed at easing U..S.-China tensions.

The cancelation came despite China's claim that the balloon was a weather research "airship" that had blown off course. The Pentagon rejected that out of hand " and China's contention that the balloon, about the size of two school buses, was not being used for surveillance and had only limited navigational ability.

The balloon was detected earlier over sensitive military sites in Montana but had moved eastward over the heartland of the central United States by midday and was expected to remain in U.S. airspace for several days, officials said.

The development marked a new blow to already strained U.S.-Chinese relations that have been in a downward spiral for years over numerous issues. Still, U.S. officials maintained that diplomatic channels remain open and that Blinken was willing to travel to China at "an appropriate time."

President Joe Biden declined to comment on the matter when questioned at an economic event. Two 2024 reelection challengers, former President Donald Trump, and Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor and U.N. ambassador, said the U.S. should immediately shoot down the balloon....

Pilots flying at high altitudes have spotted the suspected Chinese spy balloon as it drifts over the central United States.

"Derelict balloon adrift," noted the crew of a Cessna Citation private jet in a weather report, which came into the Federal Aviation Administration around 11:30 a.m. ET.

The pilot of the flight, which was at 43,000 feet, said the balloon was 20 miles north of Kansas City International Airport at about 50,000 feet. The publicly-available pilot weather observation is known as a Pilot Report or PIREP.

A source familiar with the situation tells CNN that other pilots are reporting seeing the balloon to air traffic controllers.

"All airspace above FL 600(60,000') is Class E airspace".

"Class G airspace extends from the surface to the base of the overlying Class E airspace. Although ATC has no authority or responsibility to control air traffic, pilots should remember there are visual flight rules (VFR) minimums that apply to Class G airspace."

You assertion that ADS-B is required is incorrect in the case of the balloon traveling in Class E airspace except where airports are concerned.

Regarding what height the balloon is at at any moment it is being tracked continuously by NOAA and the Pentagon. The only released altitude has been 66,000 feet at this time.

It isn't going to be shot down.

I love how conservatives are trying to have it both ways: oh, noes, Big Bad Biden shot down a weather balloon! Oh, noes, why did corrupt, wimpy Biden let a spy balloon fly around over our country for days without doing anything?

South Carolina GOP congressman says Chinese spy balloon fell right over hometown: I'm 'incredibly concerned'

Rep. Russell Fry, R-S.C., told Fox News that the Chinese surveillance balloon fell right off the coast of his district near his hometown and that he's "incredibly concerned" about why it took days to handle.

I heard someone say today on TV that China has 5 spy satellites over the US. Given that fact, I'm not sure how much of a big deal a spy balloon really is:

China has an extensive satellite network. In a Nov. 2022 report, the Defense Department said China's intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance-capable (ISR) satellite fleet had more than 260 systems, second only to the U.S., as of the end of 2021. A senior defense official noted on Thursday that, for China, the balloon flying over Montana "has limited additive value from an intelligence collection perspective."

Wait, what?:

The Pentagon has stated that there have been multiple spy balloons flying over the U.S. in recent years. So why do we know about this one?

Hmmm:

The public would have known about the ones under Trump, too, if he had the stones to shoot them down.

You mean this not only would have happened under Trump but in fact did happen? Exce[t for the shooting down part? Either Trump didn't care or his friendship with Xi and Ivanka's trademarks took priority. Imagine that.

Joe wanted a photo op and to take our attention away from the document fiasco.

Notable: US officials say they were able to block the balloon from gathering intel during its overflight of the US, while the US military was able to turn the tables, so to speak, to gather intel on the balloon itself and its equipment.

Here's an interesting tidbit:

The military jets using the call sign "FRANK" is significant. Frank Luke Jr. was an American fighter ace in World War I better known as the "Arizona Balloon Buster." He is credited with shooting down 14 German surveillance balloons

There is no way they definitely know their efforts to block transmissions were successful.

And now for your moment of Zen:

You wouldn't think a party filled with so many clowns would be this afraid of a balloon.

Enjoying the mainstream media and govt fashioning of yet another narrative. Most Americans, asleep, gulp down one side or the other, based on political affiliation.

Republican lackey or Democrat lackey, either one, the facts don't matter: only the narrative does.

Owning the narrative is owning a weapon more powerful than 100 Tsar Bombas. "Power" could be said to be the ability to control what happens, but "true power" is the ability to control what people THINK about what happens.

Joe is planning a prime time speech to announce a Manhatten style project to catchup and surpass the Chinese in balloon technology. The fifteen trillion dollar project is expected to take ten years. The goal is to circumnavigate the globe in 80 days.

Traitor Trump allowed free passage of 3 China spy balloons and hid that from the public.

Three Chinese balloons overflew the U.S. during Trump's term. Never heard a word about them, nor that they were shot down.

Biden was advised by the military to hold off shooting it down until it was over the ocean. And, as you said, they were gathering information from it all the while it flew. They had multiple military ships in place to pick up the pieces, which landed in 47 feet of water.
