Republican lawmakers in Tennessee introduced a bill this week that would add a rape exception to the state's near-total abortion ban -- with the caveat that those who "lie" about being raped to access abortion care could be sentenced to up to three years in prison.

The bill, which Jessica Valenti first surfaced in her abortion news newsletter on Tuesday, would also require rape victims who do receive abortion care (which they can only get after an invasive forensic exam) to preserve and submit "a sample of the embryonic or fetal tissue extracted during the abortion" to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation for "investigation into the offense.

The scarlet letters, will they be sewn-on fabric, tattoos, or brands?

This absurdity will continue until this issue is again addressed at the Federal level.

"This absurdity will continue until this issue is again addressed at the Federal level."

Absent a constitutional amendment, which will never even get all the blue states to support, what kind of federal action would successfully get around Dobbs?

an amendment, which there aren't enough balls to get done.

but sooner or later we'll have to do something......unless America just decides they are okay with laws like this in Tenn.

And keep in mind, it hasn't passed yet but assuming it does....it's going to be complete insanity to enforce such laws.

"... it's going to be complete insanity to enforce such laws."

That only works in their favor. Increases women's fear of an inescapable pregnancy.

But seriously, I guess every petition for abortion must be accompanied with, at minimum, a filed police report? And how does one determine that a rape didn't happen? What legal standard for proof are we going to use? Who will be responsible for making that determination? How long will that take?

all good questions.

In Texas they don't have this problem since Hotwheels says he has eliminated all rape in the state.

You need to be a little more specific.

This absurdity is happening because your party just addressed it at the Federal level.

This absurdity will continue until this issue is again addressed at the Federal level by Democrats, over the will of Republicans, which likely won't happen during our lifetimes.

Congratulations, Republicans!
You Built That.

How many false rape allegations will this cause? Will the fake rapists be locked up for non existent rapes? So many questions. I don't think the Tennessee legislation is very well thought out.

This could result in a lot of one night stands ending up with prison time or serious legal hassles for both parties.

Asking Liberals to actually prove who they are or asking them to justify their actions (breaking the law) is a losing battle. The entire 21st century so far has proven that beyond any doubt. Laws to them are considered discretionary...except if they don't agree with you, then you are the devil and you should be locked up forever just for being alive.

Knowing that rape is an incredibly hard crime to prosecute, this is just a move by the creators of this legislation to placate those who have difficulty with the lack of an exception. Even if they pass it, they won't have to grant any woman such an exception. Because they'll find ways to tie the cases up in court until it's too late to get the abortion. Not to mention the added fear women will have of bringing such accusations.

#3 | POSTED BY EBERLY is absolutely correct. But changing it at the Federal level isn't going to happen without a far more liberal government.

Why do liberals have to prove anything to you? Why is that your business?

Why don't you prove that you graduated high school.

Laws to them are considered discretionary

Like election laws, trespassing on government property, assaulting police officers with flag poles, smashing windows of a government building, smearing feces on the walls of the capitol, overthrowing an election, etc on January 6, 2021.

More evidence anti abortion laws have nothing to do with "protecting the unborn" and is all about controlling women.

The rightwing Supreme Court has really taken what was well working settled law and turn into a cluster ----, - creating lots of new issues and problems that previously did not exist.

"creating lots of new issues and problems that previously did not exist."

They're only problems if you think access to abortion services are a good thing for those that want them.
