Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, March 07, 2023

There has never been a better time to live in Florida. Gov. Ron DeSantis frequently touts this fact, and under his leadership, the Sunshine State has become brighter still. As someone who moved my own family to Florida 12 years ago, I've witnessed this rise first-hand, and I wish every state would learn from it. If others states did half of what Florida is doing, they would no doubt experience some measure of Florida's seemingly nonstop rise. So, what makes Florida so family-friendly and so attractive a place to live? Here are the top 10 reasons, from my family's perspective and our own experience. Crucially, virtually all of these reasons can be replicated in other states.

And the author of this propaganda?

"The Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) is a right-wing advocacy group founded in 2011 and based in Naples, Florida.

It is run by former Maine legislator Tarren Bragdon. It is a member of the State Policy Network (SPN), a web of state pressure groups that denote themselves as "think tanks" and drive a right-wing agenda in statehouses nationwide."

The FGA has opposed Medicaid and other federal healthcare programs since it's founding in 2011, and has consistently fought on the state level to stop expansion. In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, the FGA maintains it's position that Medicaid drains state money, harms the truly needy, and has generally proven ineffective.[1]

At the 2020 ALEC Annual conference, Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel Jonathan Bechtle spoke to state politicians and other meeting attendees about how to fight medicaid expansion on the state level.

"I want to talk for just a moment about a new battlefield, one where shadowy organizations on the left are dumping millions of dollars into the fight. They're taking really complicated, expensive, failing ideas like medicaid expansion to the ballot."[2

@#4 ... education
education ...

From the cited article...

...Florida is filled with good public schools...

Gov DeSantis has worked and is working to change that.

... Florida's higher education system is affordable and accessible...

Gov DeSantis is also working to lower the quality of the state's higher education system.

... Florida keeps government small ... ,/i>

Small, yet very intrusive.

I'll also note that the op-ed's author does not mention voting difficulties, and how tGov DeSantis seems to target those who do not usually vote for Republicans.

More on the article author who is the CEO of this nutjob group

"Florida Welfare Drug Testing Controversy

A study funded and written by the organization contributed to Florida Governor Rick Scott's defense of his controversial welfare drug-testing law, requiring benefit recipients to take a drug test as a qualification for benefits.

The law came under fire from the ACLU and other groups, and a Bush-appointed federal judge threw out the Foundation's study as evidence, claiming it was "not competent expert opinion" and that "even a cursory review of certain assumptions in the pamphlet undermines its conclusions."

www.sourcewatch.org

the law, btw, cost FL taxpayers a ton of money... and was abolished after less than 3 percent of welfare recipients tested positive for drugs.

I just watched a video clip of DeSantis talking about a stupid bill a state Senator introduced calling for bloggers criticizing state government officials to have to "register" with the state. He correctly pointed out that legislators have the right to introduce all sorts of stuff. That it gets introduced doesn't make it law. He then went on to call out our corrupt media for using a picture of him in conjunction with reporting on the bill. He had nothing to do with it and in the process of our joke media trying to tie the bill to him he stated he didn't support the bill. That kind of deception is commonplace with our media.

On this place there are likely 12+ threads a week about what the Florida legislature has introduced either in a committee or whatever and the only name that gets mentioned is DeSantis.

It's the way it is. If anybody outside of Florida really gives a ---- they'd look more into it

Um... the fact is that NO GOP legislation passes the House in FL unless Gov Ron approves of it.

And House GOP Reps willing to even put forth legislation that he wouldn't approve?

They tend to disappear to the back row.

Gov DeSantis is promoting Florida as the model he wants to use for the entirety of the United States should be become president.

Gov DeSantis may not be personally involved in proposing those wack-o bills, but what he has done in Florida seems to encourage such proposals. So he cannot distance himself from them completely.

Look at what he did with Disney. The legislators are just following his lead with their wack-o bills...

Best of luck controlling the most intimate aspects of your life like family planning. Also live next door to Trumptards and watch you progeny get sucked in by Talibaptists.

Florida, it's a wonderland for the stupid and desperate.

Let's go down the list.

1. School Choice
Private Schools are still mainly for well-off families. You can choose the public school for your child but you have to provide transportation yourself. So you are really still limited to 1 or 2 schools. Most states actually allow this already. Worse, the school system is fairly poor. The SAT scores for the state are frankly awful and the vast majority of students aren't college ready.

2. Florida Colleges are Cheap
And ranked as some of the worst and least rigorous in the country.

3. Florida encourages teens to work
How? By doing what every state does, letting them work.

4. Licensing Requirements for Job Seekers
Literally this applies to 1% of the population and isn't a problem anywhere in the country.

5-6. Taxes: Income and Property
Florida jacks up its sales taxes on everything and relies on tourism. Sales Tax is 80% of Florida's government income. I don't think Mississippi or Wyoming could do this. So tell me how other states can emulate this.

7. Building a home is fast and easy because of easy approval process
Again not a problem in hardly any other state. However, that easy approval process means a lot of them are destroyed by the first bad hurricane because they are built in terrible places or not hurricane proof and most aren't insurable.

8. Home Based Businesses are easy to start
...the same as in every state...literally every state...

9. Low Regulations
...which hasn't worked out terribly well... Environmental issues, hurricane destroyed homes and businesses, and should we mention condo buildings LITERALLY FALLING OVER?

10. Small Government!
...until DeSantis apparently. Florida has the most big government policies of any state in the country now.

If an article can't point out actual policies in the state you love and the states you want to compare it to, the article is fairly worthless...like most of Jeff's posts.

The very notion that education is put on any list about anything good in any of the 50 states is hilarious.

54% of adults in the US have a literacy below sixth-grade level. 21% of adults are illiterate.

Did the policy about no gay penguins books pull it up to 22% of adults being able to read in Florida or was it the state's anti-candybar stance?

He gave you one big one already. Probably the biggest one of all: Tourism. Something DeSantis promoted big time when he threw the doors open for spring break and spread COVID throughout the United States. You know, you praised him for that. Disney's huge - the largest employer in Central Florida. The reason taxes are low here is we live off the taxes we collect from tourism. Disney is HUGE in that regard. I love that aspect of living here - that we get all these things to do, huge infrastructure, theme parks, activities, high quality restaurants, and Disney's a huge part of the community. Performing arts centers, great talent from Disney that entertains the public that lives here. There's a lot to like.

There's also a lot to hate these days. Watching this place slide into fascism really sucks. It has to stop. It has to.

But let's be honest about it. The people moving here are Redders that are taking the advice they're giving me: Pack up and move if you don't like it where you live. Red state conservatives are flocking to Florida because they want what the GOP here is selling. They love being told they're the downtrodden, and they love hearing that others that disagree are being shut up.

That and a lot of "White" hispanics and AM radio that has done an amazing job of lying about Democrats.

"It's become MAGA in exile," Amandi explained. "Florida is now the cradle for the MAGA movement. And then you have DeSantis, who is Trump's protege or his biggest competitor. The sentiment is if you believe in the MAGA philosophy, Florida is where you want to be."

2) "Florida's higher education system is affordable and accessible" So is arby's. Because both are ----. Neither is worth the money. No one wants that.

3) "Florida encourages teenagers to get into the workforce as soon as possible" because the adults are either dying retirees or high on bath salts. Also because children are still illegal to use as wage slaves, even in fascist florida. No one wants that.

4) "Florida has made it easy for jobseekers to find work no matter where they live in the state." Because the state is economically unviable now that they've gone all gestapo on Disney and they are desperate for any workers they can get. No one wants that.

5/6) "Florida is tax heaven, both on income taxes and property taxes." Because they need new money flowing in somehow. Ponzi style is all they've got. Why tax worthless property that the fishes will own in ten years? No one wants that.

7) "Speaking of homeownership, building a new home here is fast and easy." If you don't mind being literally underwater in 10 years or don't mind the 20 floors of apartment above you crushing you to death in your sleep. No one wants that.

8) "Florida makes it easy to work from home." Once again, it seems like florida is as desperate as texas when it comes to tricking people into joining their failing economies. No one wants to work in florida.

9) "Florida takes a light touch on regulation." When it comes to building codes, environmental protection, LEO and city oversight, and ethics" Not when it comes to education, personal freedoms, freedom of speech, or life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Florida is easily the least free state in the nation right now. It's a total -------- that will only be great once it's an entire Atlantis themed underwater park owned by the Walt Disney corporation. No one wants anything else from florida.

10) "Florida keeps government small." Not small like you would think. Just small in marketing and propaganda. The dainty hands of ron desantis will be grabbing you by the ----- the moment you set foot in that first layer of Dante's Hell. No one want's florida-style governance. Not even floridians.

All of that wasn't that long ago----The camps and the ovens, and there have been close imitations since.

ALL OF THEM STARTED with people like Ron and Donald.

Here are the facts laid out by you:

First: Someone you know living in Florida says come visit, and for that reason you claim Tourism is important for Florida.

If you can't see the issue with that, there is little or no help for you.

Second: My current alias is my only alias.

Danforth,

I'm going to give you this piece of advice because I care about your well-being. Don't travel to Florida. Ron will toss your ass in a hidden underground concentration camp. You will be worked almost to death. When your body is no longer able to move, you will be slow cooked at 225 degrees.

Just. Stay. Away.

I poke fun at you when you go off the rails. Which has been happening a lot lately.

Also, this little victimhood angle you are trying is not going to work. Are you aware that I've been accused of being a racist, misogynist, homophobe, transphobe, facsist, Nazi? On a frequent basis?

Don't ask for sympathy.

He's not a threat to anyone.

He's guaranteed to sit on his ass, blog all day about his ------ lot in life, who is governor is and how that guy is ruining his good time....and that's it.

And the very people who have accused you of being a racist, misogynist, homophobe, transphone, facsist, and a nazi haven't said jack ---- about that.
