Two Republicans team with a Democrat to introduce this bill. Civil asset forfeiture is egregious. It's likely unconstitutional and is rife with abuse. Hopefully these three can appeal to the civil libertarians in both parties. While I'm not holding my breath I am happy to see this introduced as a bill.

Well, since nobody else is posting on my apparently ------- thread, I will.

This is a very good thing. While I don't think this will go very far, the fact that lawmakers from both parties are even willing to address this is a start.

This should never have been allowed in the first place.

The Roberts Court has had several opportunities to end this practice or at least severely curtail it. They've had plenty of cases they've refused to hear over the years that they could have used to put an end to the practice.

forfeiture and the radar gun are time honored methods of keeping the constabulary solvent in many parts of the country
along with using convicts for virtual slave labor

I remember a local sheriff doing to everyone.

He would wait outside the local bar and find a nice truck for one of his buddies. Then he would stop the person driving home and make damn sure they got a DUI. He got in trouble for pushing DUI cases without a breathalyzer showing intoxication but it didn't stop him. For those he got, he took their vehicles if he could. Then the vehicle would "go up for auction" but it wouldn't be posted. So his buddies could come get a new truck for next to nothing.

He finally got caught when people put it all together...and one of his buddies bragged about his constant new trucks.

Don't worry though! Happy Ending: He just retired with full pension rather than getting in trouble.

A friend had his car taken after cops found a small roach in his ashtray.

Police and their stans will say this impedes their ability to fight crime.

Does anybody believe that? I sure don't.

If this bill should pass, does this mean that Trump would be exempt from forfeiting his personal residence in Palm Beach, Florida unless there was clear and convincing evidence that Mar-a-Lago was used in the process of a criminal activity?

I wonder how many strategy meetings to overthrow the government are still taking place there.

It's been sorely abused.

Just another republican sponsored attack on civil liberties (from the "radical right" though Reagan Republicans would not be considered radical at all these days!) on the war on drugs that has had unintended (or maybe they were intended) and negative and potentially unconstitutional consequences. Especially for the poor and disadvantaged minorities and low income individuals.

As usual.
