High School Tour Shows the Haves and Have-nots
When Carlotta Berry viewed two TikTok videos of students giving a tour of their affluent high school less than 45 minutes away from her home in Avon, Indiana, she was speechless.

Local funding of schools was designed to preserve exactly this kind of inequality. It's the American way, praise Jesus. Why should my kids have to compete on a level playing field with my lessers? So what if those kids are going hungry and their schools are dilapidated and their text books are out of date? Their parents are probably junkies anyway. Now excuse me while I go pat myself on the back for having concrete proof of the existence of a righteous god who cosigns my perspective.

Haggard, more money is spent per student in Baltimore than anywhere else in the country and yet look at their situation? It's not about money but what those in charge do with it and apparently in places like Baltimore they're not doing the right things with it.

If its not about money, then you won't mind if we decouple school funding from the local tax base!
But somehow, you and the rest of the Republicans will never agree to that.

"Local funding of schools was designed to preserve exactly this kind of inequality"
How so?
School boards, state representation, etc. all democratically elected and decide that funding.
How is it "designed" for inequality?
What about places like New York?
It's designed to preserve inequality?
Im not arguing it's equitable. Im asking where and how is it designed to be unequal

Half the funding comes from the local tax base.
As a result, poor neighborhoods have cheap schools.

It's true that local taxes are a factor. Low property values means less money.
That's completely true.
But that formula exists everywhere. Liberal and conservative and many states constitutionally have to adequately fund public schools. And the courts enforce this.
So if it's by design then a crapload of people are in on this conspiracy with no desire to change the formula.

Also, there's the matter of students having an interest in utilizing and willing to take care of things.
To be perfectly frank that could be a factor where they are willing to investment in education.
Is the problem only haves and have nots?
At what point does will and will nots become a consideration factor.
I think we've seen time and again just throwing money at people and problems doesn't create motivation.

So you think private, for-profit, schools are going to provide a better educational experience, eh? And before you say that those vouchers will be usable at parochial schools, what about children of families whose religious beliefs are not the same as the schools that are getting all the money? This could lead to even more problems.

Actually it would give black parents a choice to remove their children from substandard public schools.
With vouchers, more private schools would spring up to meet the needs of a growing interest in attending them.

How much of the tuition do the vouchers cover? Versus the non-tuition of public schools?
That aside, why do Republicans seem to be so against the funding of public schools to provide the level of education they express they want for all students? Republicans seem to deny funding for public schools, then go on to say how bad the public schools are. Is that an intentional strategy of Republicans? Underfund something, then blast out how bad that something works?
Is it just their way of transferring public money to wealthy Republicans?

Why not just make public schools better?
Stated differently, why do Republicans seem to want to destroy the public school system?

Speak,
Like I said, it would lead to more private schools coming into existence. It wouldn't happen overnight but it would happen.
It would be up to the parents who are involved in their children's lives to make things happen.
Those sort of parents wouldn't be the type to sit back waiting on the government but would utilize whatever resources they had to improve the lives of their children.
That may be a concept you don't comprehend if you didn't have those sort of parents.
My children certainly did.
They weren't raised in a broken home and had parents who were both college educated and very involved.
I suspect a big problem now with inner city school children is a lack of parental involvement and looking for the government to provide the guidance parents should be providing.

#38 | Posted by LampLighter at 2023-03-18 10:10 PM | Reply
Like I said, I've pretty well written off public schools.
At my age and seeing public schools go through so many programs and experiments to motivate children yet today things are worse than ever, the problem is far worse than simply not enough money.
It's the cultures of certain public schools.
Offer school vouchers for parents who want to get their kids out of that.

@#37 ... It would be up to the parents who are involved in their children's lives to make things happen. ...
And those parents want public schools to be better. Yet Republicans seems to argue against that goal. Why?
So why give the education of children over to for-profit corporations?
Health-care was given over to for-profit corporations, and the average lifespan has been decreasing.
So, yeah, you're gonna have to give many more reasons for the attempt of Republicans to kill public schooling than you've done so far.
For example, why do Republicans seem to want those who cannot afford private schools uneducated?

I'm not sure I'd hang my hat on that causation. The reason the average lifespan has been decreasing is based on two statistical blips: the opioid crisis, which shaved 20-30 years off an average lifespan per death, and Covid, which killed a lot of people a few years ahead of their life expectancy.
These macrostatistical blips will smooth over time. My prediction: within 5 years, you'll be seeing headlines touting spikes in human longevity.

Yeah, I focused more upon what was being taught, as opposed to judging the quality of parents. We're talking about schools, not parents.
Why does that seem to be a bad thing for you?
Why do you seem to be so against public schools teaching students how to have an open mind, and query?
Your comments seems to prefer that you send your children off to school to be indoctrinated (in private schools), as opposed to schools that open the minds of students.
