Why are CDs 44.1/16, and other things tha tkeep you awake...
Sony was originally proposing 44.056 kHz (NTSC - popular in Japan) with 16 bits while Philips was pushing for 44.1 kHz (PAL - popular in Europe) with 14 bits.

Ultimately, what I had heard at the time was that the 44.1/16 format was decided upon because a VHS tape could contain the mater digital recording. Audio quality seemed to take a back seat over convenience.
