...Aspen Skiing Company's vice-president of sustainability, Auden Schendler, who watches skiers as they walk in, says it's not enough for resorts to just change their on-site operations to become "green." They must also advocate for policies that combat climate change.

As global warming threatens to put much of the ski industry out of business over the next several decades, resorts are beginning to embrace a role as climate activists in the halls of government.

The industry contributes just a tiny fraction of overall greenhouse gas emissions, which cause climate change, but arguably has outsized influence on popular culture and in the business world.

While many resorts are focused on reducing their own emissions, others are going much further, leveraging their influence to shift public opinion and advocate for climate legislation....

...There are no surprises here for those who have read the individual reports in this cycle. Instead, it underlines the fundamentals. For example, "Human activities, principally through emissions of greenhouse gases, have unequivocally caused global warming, with global surface temperature reaching 1.1 C above 1850"1900 in 2011"2020," the report says.

That warming will continue as long as we keep increasing the concentration of greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere, and the consequences worsen as the temperature rises. There is no shortage of actions we can take immediately to limit warming and reduce those consequences....

There are interesting ways our knowledge has improved since the previous assessment report was released in 2013"2014. Projected sea level rise has become a bit clearer, for example, while trends in current weather extremes have been identified with certainty. But the new report's most important update is that progress on climate change remains insufficient to limit warming to 1.5C or 2C despite the fact that significant progress has occurred.

Scenarios that let us hit those targets "involve rapid and deep and, in most cases, immediate greenhouse gas emissions reductions in all sectors this decade," the report notes.

Compared to 2019, global emissions would have to drop about 21 percent by 2030 and 35 percent by 2035 to keep warming below 2C. To keep the rise below 1.5C, those numbers would have to strengthen to 43 percent and 60 percent. ...

Yes, Aspen is the perfect place for this green building to be located.

Because out of the dozens and dozens of ski resorts in Colorado.....take a guess on what Aspen ranks #1 with regard to their carbon footprint???

That's right......you guessed it....

@#8 ... Are you intentionally responding to sarcasm with sarcasm? ...

The sarcasm in your comments is often difficult to differentiate from those comments of yours that may not contain sarcasm.

Oh the constant hypocrisy from the activists. Private jets in and out from those screaming "lower your footprint." I still ski race and just heard that one of these resorts is banning wax on your skis.

That's not "Green," that's just business.

If it was better for ski resorts for us to burn more jet fuel, they'd be lobbying for that.

"Private jets"

Want to do a quick comparison on the carbon output of private jets vs commercial jets?
And don't forget commercial air freight!

"I literally just got back from a ski trip"

Dude, I was up skiing at Lee Canyon outside of Las Vegas two Sundays ago. They had a 217" base at the time. It's up to 235"

They are going to hit 20' of snow this winter.

I can't remember which resort it was, but I saw an article yesterday about a ski area in CA that had more than 600" inches of snow.
