"A Trump indictment would be a disgusting abuse of power," Paul said in the tweet.
The Kentucky senator did not provide any further details or context on the tweet, and Trump had not been formally indicted by the district attorney's office as of Tuesday afternoon."

I genuinely believe there are many, many Republican politicians who honestly believe that prosecuting a Republican politician should be a crime. The belief that they somehow above-the-law seems prevalent among them.

Okay. Then someone should call of Bragg because what he's doing isn't hurting Trump, it's helping Trump and I know you don't want that.

Hillary Clinton faced a similar situation with the funding of the Steele Dossier. Her team was hit with a fine.

Zed,
Here is the problem with your 'ends justify the means' approach - the pendulum power swings and then those who you oppose employ the same means with a degree of impunity because the precedent has already been set.

Is there any question at this point that Trump lied about his impending Tuesday arrest to gauge the level of protest/violence he could still whip up, to intimidate prosecutors, and/or to soften the blow by getting out ahead of the story and controlling the narrative?
Trump is a pathetic ------ in many ways, but his ability to manipulate media coverage is unparalleled in current day politics.

If you do lots of illegal things you can face lots of prosecution.
#29 | Posted by schifferbrains at 2023-03-24 11:13 AM | Reply
Thanks Jeff. But regarding #28, it implies you think Trump did not actually commit a crime worthy of arrest. Can you clarify your position on that?
#30 | Posted by JOE at 2023-03-24 11:20 AM | Reply
Sure, Joe.
I think the case that Bragg is trying to put forth is very weak. He's taking what is at worse a misdemeanor, which is past its statute of limitations due date and is trying to elevate it to a felony. When Hillary Clinton faced similar potential charges over the funding of the Steele Dossier she was simply hit with a fine. Now, that addresses the Stormy Daniels hush money.
The next case is the handling of classified documents - if that case pushes forward things will become very awkward for Biden and Pence. Granted, every case is different but in this situation there are plenty of similarities. So, again, that one is questionable. Maybe it goes somewhere but right now I have my doubts.
The third case is the one currently underway in Georgia. THAT is the one that should make Trump nervous. I haven't followed that case closely as of yet (Trump fatigue) but from what I have seen is it appears quite serious.

The point being, of course, that Trump never intends that pendulum to swing, ever again.
Here's the problem with you: Even an attempted coup doesn't convince you of that.
You coddle dictators. I think you're beyond convincing.
#32 | Posted by Zed at 2023-03-24 11:44 AM | Reply
I appreciate your detailed response, but i (predictably) disagree on several counts.
First, calling the NY case "at worst a misdemeanor" is simply false. Falsifying business records can be charged as a misdemeanor or a felony depending on the facts and circumstances of the case. So "at worst" it is a felony, not a misdemeanor. Similarly, claiming he's "trying to elevate" the case from a misdemeanor is misleading and manipulative characterization. It *can* be charged as a felony so this is not some sleight of hand or improper effort by Bragg, as your remarks would imply. Finally, statutes of limitations are tolled in New York for each day the defendant spends out of state, which Trump spent plenty in DC and FL during the period in question, so the SOL argument is likely to be overcome.

He needs to suffer. Tyrants need to suffer.

Who cares? The question was whether Trump committed a crime. The facts of the documents case point to several likely crimes. If other people did it too, in manners that meet the statutory elements, then charge them too. I don't view the cases as comparable but even if you do it is irrelevant to whether Trump committed a crime.
#35 | Posted by JOE at 2023-03-24 11:48 AM | Reply
Joe,
Despite all of that minutia (which I appreciate), I think the case has a low probability of becoming an indictment and an even lower probability of a conviction in spite of the fact that in New York the judge and jury pool would likely have a strong dislike for Trump.
That's how I see it based upon everything that has been reported and based on what appears to be setbacks this week.
The case that intrigues me is the one in GA.

Yes and no.
The nature of Trump's mental illness is that he creates a false reality in which he is omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent.
But he does this in order to compensate for a sense of self that is both pustulant and bleeding.
If you push him hard enough, he will fall down.
