Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The principal of Florida's Tallahassee Classical School is out of a job after parents complained that their sixth-grade children were shown Michelangelo's 16th century "David" sculpture, with one parent calling it "pornographic," the Tallahassee Democrat first reported.

Remember when John Ashcroft had facilities people drape sheets over the nude parts of statues at the DOJ?

As a progressive, I want to look at the headline and then cover my monitor in indignant spittle because it confirms everything I believe.

Just the headline, please.

I don't want to read this part..

The now-former principal, Hope Carrasquilla, told HuffPost the situation was also "a little more complicated than that," noting that the usual protocol is to send parents a letter before students are shown such classical artwork. Due to "a series of miscommunications," the letter did not go out to the sixth-grade parents, and some complained, Carrasquilla said.

And I certainly don't want to read this part:

In a call with HuffPost, Bishop emphasized that the nude sculpture incident was one of multiple issues with Carrasquilla. He declined to go into specifics, citing advice from the school's employment lawyers.

And that was fake, manufactured ---------, too.

Draperies were an aesthetic decision made by staffers that allowed the room to be changed for various functions because they looked good on camera.

Pretty sure I've heard this statue held up in the past as an example of technical nudity that Society finds acceptable.

In fact I think there have been debates about this statue and ones from the same era dating back to the 1900s.

And that's wonderful.

But do you understand that this Principal was not fired because she showed students the Statue of David?

She was fired because the school for whom she worked had a protocol for parent notification whenever minor children were shown "technical" nudity and she did not follow that protocol. There were apparently also other disciplinary issues with this woman, too.

So you were misled by the headline and lede above so that you might continue to perpetuate the outrage feedback loop.

You're firmly on the record you're indifferent to 6th graders having pornhub accounts.

First, half of them already do, according to you, and you're indifferent to that.

And if you had to make a choice, then sure....it's fine. It's a better way to raise kids by allowing pornhub accounts? Which means, of course, complete access to any and all kinds of pornography, including some pretty intense stuff.

Which I'm sure you knew when you referenced pornhub. You know what's on there.

Hell, even I've seen what's on that website.

I'm not indifferent. I have some pretty strong opinions on what 6th graders do and what is appropriate for them to be exposed to and what expectations should be placed on them.

Pornography is a bad bad bad thing for 6th graders.

I would equate it to alcohol, tobacco, and narcotics ... ..and firearms (mostly)

But as a parent and leader, it's my job to NOT be indifferent to such dangers. It's to recognize and address such things.

As a parent. You should be proud you raised your kids based on those opinions.

What's weird is you agree with me. But you're so desperate to find an argument.

Pointing out kids have access to the internet doesn't mean I condone or condemn what they're doing. It's a fact.

I offered an opinion about it because you wanted one.

I'm not sure why "Pornography is a bad bad bad thing for 6th graders."

But I'm not advocating showing 6th graders pornography.

Just pointing out they've most likely seen more explicit content than the statute of David.

And again. I don't consider the Statue of David to be pornographic.

"------, onanism, ----------, prostitution, ------- mutilation, --------, ------, rape, and even infanticide," the parent wrote in their request, according to the Salt Lake Tribune, which obtained a copy of the request. Couple of thoughts here. 1) Someone needs to show these parents examples of real pornography, so they can gain some perspective . And 2) I'm enjoying the irony of rightwing, Christian, pro-teaching of the Western/classical tradition bumping up against the reality of the Western/classical tradition. Chaucer, anyone? Or, hell, even Shakespeare for that matter:

The Tallahassee school is a public charter institution that focuses on classical learning, a teaching philosophy centered on a traditional Western liberal arts education that aims to impart critical thinking skills children can use throughout their lives. Classical learning is also popular within the Christian homeschooling movement.

The Tallahassee Classical School is affiliated with Hillsdale College, a conservative Christian institution that has sought to expand its influence over the last decade by helping set up public charter schools. Hillsdale briefly cut ties with the Tallahassee school in early 2022 for not meeting improvement standards, but it later regained affiliation.

Hillsdale has raised funds for the charter school network by pledging to fight "leftist" and "distorted" teaching of American history, such as the lessons about slavery contained in The New York Times' 1619 Project, the newspaper reported last year.

Hillsdale College is the college DeSantis wants to remake the New College of Florida into, right?

"If you get a chance to go to Florence, it's worth the wait in line to see the original."

Absolutely agree. I've seen it twice, and would go back in a heartbeat.

OK, so now your current has been reduced to spamming, apparently in an admission that it has little else to contribute.

Of course, that begs the question....

Why does a person, who may live here in the US, want to destroy a piece of art in another country, and call it a "fair" thing to do?

Statues are a part of history. Leave them alone.

Phester is still crying his favorite statues of confederate soldiers were removed.

Assuming you refer to the confederate statues which were destroyed or removed, I agree with you they should not be destroyed. They are historical symbols and cannot be replaced. That being said, there is also room for understanding of what they represent. They should be displayed in a place and context where their historical, artistic and educational value can be explained and interpreted.

I agree with you. They should be put in museums.

Were any actually destroyed? I may be mistaken, but I was under the impression they were all moved, not destroyed.

Statues have their places. This one is in a museum. As the confederate statutes should also be.

So it's ok for the children to go to the museum and see it? Or are we "grooming" them if we allow them to gaze upon it? Since you brought it up it Seems to me that placing a confederate soldier in a public square is grooming children to think that being a confederate rebel was a just and noble thing. I know I was convinced of that for quite a while as a child.

Was it ? Was being a confederate a just and noble cause? Is it something everyone should be aware of? Yes. But we should not have idolized them.

Is the statue of David a just and noble thing? Something everyone should be aware? I would think so!

Like Jake says there is something very wrong with a parent that thinks the statue of David is bad for children but idolizing the rebellion and violence of confederate soldiers in the list cause of slavery is not.

I believe some were vandalized or torn down and damaged. I found this article from 2020 with a list of damaged monuments. thehill.com

IIRC I believe a lot were removed to warehouses or other storage sites.

This society's hang ups about the human body are pathological. If David had a ------, maybe a cause for concern. Maybe.

For those not afraid of David, there's a 30-foot tall golden replica standing in front of the 21c museum hotel on Main Street in Louisville. www.21cmuseumhotels.com
