FL is intent on alienating big swaths of American society which seems crazy for a state that relies on tourist dollars.

"It doesn't make any sense."

It's Florida Jake. It doesn't have to make sense. It needs to rile up the baser instincts of maga maroons. That's all.

If you don't like it they will gladly provide you with a bus ticket to Martha's Vineyard.

So one person gets to decide what is appropriate for every else to learn about?

Soon everyone will be just as dumb as the dumbest person in the state.

Good luck with that plan Floriduh!

yeah, I remember her in real time. about 1960 I think. It was the biggest civil rights issue since Little Rock in '57. Then there was James Meridith in '63 I think. On and On and On
Protest them going and now we shoot them to death when they get there

Florida is such a --------.

One of the radio stations here has a morning show bit called "fake news or Florida."

It's basically real headlines from Florida mixed with made up, over the top insane nonsense.

And it's usually hard to tell them apart.

How does learning history hurt anyone?

I don't call conservatives regressive for no reason.

They're on a crusade to bring the dark ages of anti intellectualism straight to modern day America.

So taking down a confederate statues is "erasing history" to republicans, but banning info that upsets white people isn't?

#10 | Posted by SpeakSoftly at 2023-03-27 06:50 PM | Reply

I'm sure one of the reasons they're waging this newer uglier culture war is that the confederate stuff was taken down.

I agree with you but I think you are underestimating the racism and homophobia that is normal for North Floida....Watch "Carol" on Netflix.

Sooner or later some parent will complain when it is reported to them that somewhere in a school a copy of the Holy Bible appeared. Hijinks will ensue when some school board disagrees and a local judge agrees, overruling the school board while invoking the legal dictum of "What's good for the goose..." while causing the Bible in question (and all others like it) are formally removed from schools in many Red states.

And that, kids, is how we got religion out of public schools...

Is this story up on another thread somewhere? I would've expected the usual suspects to come by to defend or minimize as is their habit.

Into the memory hole it goes. This is double-plus good.

You can't spell Florida without the duh! I just hope those morons stay there and don't flee for other states as sea levels rise.

... A Florida elementary school removed a Disney movie about Ruby Bridges after a parent complained ...

So, the complaint of one parent has affected all the students in the school, regardless of what other parents may want.

Please explain to me, how is this A Good Thing?

What if one parent objects to 2+2=4?

Will that also be banned in Florida schools?

Why is Florida actively pushing its schools to the lowest level of education by trying to please very single parent?

Florida seems to be intentionally lowering the level of education it provides.

But, I guess, as fmr Pres Trump has stated, "I Love the Poorly Educated" ( www.thedailybeast.com 2016 )

"Please explain to me, how is this A Good Thing?"

It gives DeSantis operating cover to micromanage the schools as he sees fit. It's only a good thing if you think DeSantis should be micromanaging schools, which JeffJ adores and Eberly can't make up his mind about. Generally speaking, Republicans here can't wait to vote for it in 18 months.

"Florida seems to be intentionally lowering the level of education it provides."

A better term for what Republicans and DeSantis are doing is: Whitewashing.
But they are also firing warning shots across the bow of academia, letting them know there's a new boss in town, and it's his way or the highway.

Basically, everything DeSantis is doing has parallels from Nazi Germany.

I wonder if DeSantis keeps "My New Order" on his nightstand like Trump, but actually studies it as a blueprint for Das Neue Reich?

If I were a minority family, I would be filing complaint about every single book, movie etc as a reprisal.

Bring it all out in the open.
