Dead schoolchildren. MAGA's version of making America great again. An AR-15 in every household. Body armor for third graders. Money (and more money) for the gun industry. The moral fiber of this nation has not become this unraveled since the days of slavery. And it is pretty obvious that the American Right wing shoulders most of the blame.

The best day of my recent past (besides the birth of my son) was when my wife left her job as principal of a high school. She's the type of educator who wouldn't flee at the first sound of gunfire and would, at the very least, do everything she could to evacuate students before herself. I had zero doubt that if I ever got a call at work that there was an incident at her school, I'd probably be identifying a body.

I had actually investigated quite thoroughly good sources of body armor and had already picked a few items to purchase for her, including soft armor that could be put on her torso within seconds and panels that could be inserted into bookbags or messenger bags that were rated to stop handgun rounds up to .44 mag.

Luckily it wasn't necessary as she took our son's arrival as an opportunity to find 100% remote work.

Also, kudos to the Nashville Metro PD for showing how a proper response is conducted. Maybe that'll put a cork in the idiots who want Uvalde to be the standard so that they can advocate for teachers being gunfighters as well as educators.

The scene is in an upscale part of Nashville (pronounced: few, if any children of color). Someone is bringing a dose of reality to rich, white folks. I am very sorry about any loss of life, and the sudden reality of the danger of so many guns in this country presented to the families and neighbors of the victims might, just for a second, change the thinking of some folks. Or not...

America:
where many thousands angrily demand the right to a version of the Second Amendment that the Founding Fathers never intended or imagined.

America:
where the "right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" doesn't mean anything, because we could...any of us....be killed by people with guns any day. The "right to life" as one poster put it to me in 2016 online, was negotiable; if 30,000+ had to die by guns so he could own as many and any type he liked, he was ok with that.

No other country in the world has this problem, but please let's fool ourselves into thinking how superior we are.

Just today as I was driving past an elementary school, I noticed how it had a 10 ft. chain link fence surrounding it. That definitely wasn't the norm when I was a kid. All I could think about was how the money to pay for that fence could have been used to buy more books or playground or sports equipment.

NASHVILLE, TENN. -
Authorities say they believe the 28-year-old female shooter who killed three children and three adults at a private Christian school in Nashville on Monday was a former student.

It's odd how they keep mentioning she "may have been a student at the school."

She's 28.

The school only has students up to 12.

Seems weird that 16 years later she'd be angry enough to kill random children.

What percent of mass shooters are concerned with being arrested for their crimes? I'd argue it borders on 0%.

Further, in the time it takes a "sniper" to locate the source of fire, get into position, and take out a mass shooter, dozens or hundreds would still be dead thanks to herculean effort by Republicans to keep weapons of war legal and easily available to every psychopath in the country. And that's assuming the shot could even be taken without putting additional fans at risk.

Blackburn votes against Senate gun bill despite last-minute push for amendment

"I'm a no-vote on the gun control bill that would erode Americans' constitutional right to bear arms," Blackburn said, reaffirming her staunch belief in no legislation that would impede gun ownership.

"Enhanced funding for school security & mental health treatment is a good thing " but it's being combined with giving the left a foothold to limit the 2nd Amendment. I voted against the gun control bill because Americans' constitutional right to keep & bear arms is not negotiable."

Fellow Tennessee senator Bill Hagerty was also a "no" vote on the bill in all steps of the process, though he has not released a statement on his decision.

JEFFJ,

So the answer to ending this problem is outfitting every school, primary and secondary, with dozens of armed cops? Who's going to pay for that? The school system that is consistently being undermined by Republican policies? What about the private and charter schools? You expect them to front the bill for armed police officers? Dozens of them 5 days a week?

As of 2021, there were approximately 98,000 public schools and 34,000 private schools in the United States, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Of these schools, around 87,000 were traditional public schools, while the remaining were public charter schools. And you want DOZENS of armed cops stationed at these schools? Did you ignore the absurd arithmetic it would take to get that done?

WTF planet are you living on? Some fiscal conservative you need up being.

Swallow it.

There isn't a police precinct near there. Also, traffic is a nightmare in that area. The nearest precinct is 4 miles away, also on Harding Place.

There is a fire station just through the woods from the school, and some of little kids ran there when the shooting began.

The shooter lived on a nearby street of multi-million dollar homes.

This is just more "Constitutional Rights for me but not for Thee" that has become so common from the Right.

You asked for a Bible verse about ------- mutilation, I gave it. Sorry that it bothers you so much that you won't actually address how they're different.

Just kidding, I'm not sorry at all, since you can't.

Also, to claim that the trans community's suicide rate is due to mental illness rather than external societal pressures - pressures that YOU contribute to - is pretty self serving and gross. Look at suicide rates of other marginalized groups over the years and you'll start to see a pattern. Marginalized groups facing hatred from society tend to have higher rates of suicide.

But back on topic. As always, thoughts and prayers. That's just about anyone can do these days. As a parent, it horrifies me that this can literally happen at any school, any time, and we refuse to even pretend to address it.

While police have called the suspect a female and a woman, and used she/her pronouns during their first press conferences, on LinkedIn, Hale indicated the use of he/him pronouns. Nashville Police Chief John Drake said Hale does identify as transgender, per a later press conference.

Hale's family and friends have not commented if Hale was transgender or had transitioned from female to male or just preferred he/him pronouns. The LinkedIn also indicated Hale has used the name Aiden Hale, including links to a now-deleted Instagram page under the name "creative.aiden," and a Facebook page with the name "Aiden Creates," along with a still-active RedBubble site with the same name. Hale uses the name Audrey Hale on a personal website.

A broad term like mental illness isn't the problem either. There are millions of Americans who have some sort of mental illness who never become mass murderers. Being bullied growing up is often a common denominator for mass murderers, but we'll have to see if this woman was bullied as a kid. Maybe in that very school?

If there is a manifesto, we should find out her motive:

Drake said the shooting was a "targeted attack." He also said, "We have a manifesto, we have some writings that we are going over that pertain to this date of the actual incident. We have a map drawn out of how this was also going to take place. There is right now a theory that we may be able to talk about later, but it is not confirmed. We'll put that out as soon as we can."

Local news here in Nashville is reporting that the children had practiced active shooter drills on a regular basis (how sad they even had to).

They locked doors, hid in closets. When the shooter couldn't get access to any more of the first floor rooms, she/he went upstairs. The cops killed the shooter on the landing.

POSSIBLE REASON:

Local news just reported the manifesto they found said there was animosity for having to attend a Christian school. Covenant School only goes through 6th grade. Presbyterians are moderate. Not right wing at all like evangelical Christians.

My considered guess is that the shooter's parents probably sent him to one of the derth of evangelical, Bible thumping, you're-going-to-Hell Christian schools 7-12. A far different and probably traumatizing experience for someone with sexuality differences.

His mom was active at The Village Chapel, a "hellfire and holy ghost" evangelical church.

Like most evangelical churches, all about Jesus dying than anything He said to do while He was alive. Using guilt and the Old Testament/Paul (Paul, who never knew Jesus in His lifetime) to justify doing whatever they want to when they're at odds with the "red print" in the Bible (Christ's words).

A person wrestling with their sexuality would definitely feel like an outcast. And treated like one by these self-righteous "Christian" hypocrites.

Its tragic that conservatives can't take the same effort they are with the classroom woke BS and apply it to what is actually killing children.

But the truth is, dead kids can't grow up to vote democrat, so its not worth more trouble to even local conservatives than thoughts and prayers.

No doubt there is less murder because of the law.

The idea that we can stop all school (or otherwise) gun violence is ridiculous and just introduced by conservatives to muddy the waters.

No doubt, stronger gun laws would result in less child death. Maybe in this case, maybe not.

"where the "right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" doesn't mean anything"

what about the life, liberty and pursuit of happiness of those innocent children,
gunned down at the start of their lives?

you have the right to a gun, yes. You do not have a right to a machine gun that has
no other valid 'hunting purpose' other than to kill other human beings...

"The gun law should read, every household is entitled to one pistol, one shotgun, and
one bolt-action rifle. If you cannot defend your house or get enough enjoyment out
of shooting those guns, then you are not 'doing guns' correctly.

If you need to shoot a machine gun, either play a video game, or one can be checked out
(and checked back in) at the nearest gun range. Renter of said gun is responsible for
the purchase of all ammo."

Per the law, do not exist. Assault Rifles by definition are full auto.

You can't remove parts to make a semi automatic AR into a fully automatic one. You have to mill a new lower receiver, the only part of an AR that is legally a firearm, and is already illegal to manufacture.

You can modify an AK with a piece of rubber put behind the buffer. Already illegal.

All of it just makes you miss really fast. It feels like you've never been to a military firing range. Outside of crew served weapons or squad heavy machineguns, you don't shoot your carbine as fast as you possibly can. That's not a thing. You actually have to aim it. The DI will make you suffer greatly otherwise.

All the mass murderers before, the White Supremacists, the hate crimes, the alienated and bullied, the mentally unstable, and yet this one individual is singed out as some kind of example of the issue with transgenderism? All those other mass shootings had nothing to do with it. Shall we ban all humans from owning guns now because all those other humans were examples?

You anti-trans folks are absolutely unhinged.

Mental illness takes on many, many, many forms - and for a small percentage, retribution from being hated, alienated, bullied, made to feel like worthless, broken, wrong, mistakes, freaks is going to happen. That's only one part of the problem of mass shootings, though. The continued repetition of hate and blame on "THOSE people" and "THEM" when referring to Jews, blacks, hispanics, non-"christian", LGBQT, etc., builds hate - and motivation for violence and mass shootings. We've been watching it play out for years now. The difference?

The GOP has made damn sure that guns are ubiquitous, incredibly easy to get, and a solution to so many problems. They are the equalizer. Used to overthrow our own elections if they're needed. A right that is inviolable.

Stupid people focused on the insignificant. Just what the GOP and gun manufacturers need.

#342. Progress? Why don't we look at the actual issue - which is why in the heck are people engaging in mass shootings over the past four decades. During the 80's fully automatic weapons were legal and accessible. Remember the Uzi? Gun accessibility hasn't gotten more loose when we take a big step back.

#343 | POSTED BY BELLRINGER

Well gosh, genius, it's not that hard to figure out. Not many people owned fully automatic weapons in the 1980's. Nor were those types of weapons capable of mass shootings nor had they destructive power of current assault rifles.

Since the 1980's the number of hunters has fallen 50%. But the number of guns in the country has tripled.

US Gun Manufacturers are making 5 times more guns now than in 1990.

It's not rocket science, genius.

Every time there is a mass shooting the left immediately makes it political and broad brush blames ALL of their political opponents.

Who should they blame? When virtually every Republican in existence can't even bring themselves to support something as lame as universal background checks, it's not that out of line to say this is a Republican problem generally.

We could have meaningful gun regulations if it weren't for Republicans getting in the way. A person doesn't have a need for an AR 15. Republicans don't believe that someone like me shouldn't have a gun. By rights I shouldn't have a gun. Not because I am trans but because I am a suicide risk. We could stop a lot of shootings if we banned AR 15s. Even Ronald Reagan supported gun control.

Fully automatic guns were available in the United States in the 1980s, but they were subject to significant regulation under the National Firearms Act of 1934 (NFA). The NFA required that individuals seeking to purchase or possess fully automatic firearms, as well as other types of firearms such as short-barreled rifles and shotguns, suppressors, and destructive devices, to undergo a background check and obtain a special tax stamp from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The process was time-consuming and expensive, and many people did not go through it.

Additionally, the Firearms Owners Protection Act of 1986 (FOPA) placed additional restrictions on the sale and transfer of fully automatic firearms. Under the FOPA, only firearms registered with the ATF before May 19, 1986, may be transferred to individuals or entities that are not dealers or manufacturers, and the supply of such firearms is strictly limited. As a result, fully automatic firearms became much rarer and more expensive after the FOPA was enacted.

So while fully automatic guns were available in the United States in the 1980s, they were heavily regulated and subject to significant restrictions under federal law.

Seriously, these atrocities occur on a regular basis, but nothing can be done.

So, the logical conclusion is that people simply DGAF.

I mean, there is the show of GAF, but not GAF is really at the heart of it.

nothing can be done.

Let's break it down a tad, 1st you strike 50% of Americans who are republican or conservative=they REALLY don't GAF. I mean look at their XMAS cards and lapel pins. ----, right here on this thread, there is some serious DGAF vibes.

Republicans REALLY DGAF about 9 year olds being blasted with military style weapons. I won't even bother with their "excuses" which invariably break down to "I am a selfish baby and no one can tell me what to do". Oh they have their Rambo fantasies of blasting down bad guys left and right, but the sad fact (you know those things) is that if is far more likely their depressed teenage son will use the gun to blow their brains out in fit of pique.

Then there are the dems, the other 50% or so who DGAF. Similar to the 1/6 insurrection, nothing can be done. Oh, they can talk a better game, but in the end, like in so many ways, they are useless and ineffective. So, they really DGAF either.

But it all comes down to driving past an accident on the road, a temporary "well isn't that a shame" and soon to be forgotten, when in reality looking at the tragedy is FUN in the "Glad it didn't happen to me, but ohhh the feels, that is some really good feelings by proxy"

So just ------- stop acting like you care, Americans simply don't care. ---- I bet you can't remember the last say 5 mass murders at schools, ---- last 3, no 2!?

So, stop lying to yourself, I would respect you more, you DGAF.

"So, the logical conclusion is that people simply DGAF."

It's not that people don't care.
It's that people can't do anything about it.
It would take a majority of both houses of Congress to GAF. But even then, it probably would get shot down by the Supreme Court.

I think we should consider radical ideas to the solution.

How about, say combine the Purge with the Hunger games. Every year Americans can shoot as many children as they want for one 24 hour period.

Maybe that would satiate our blood lust!

We can even sell balloons with babies faces on them with a look of terror-it'll be extra funny when they explode!

Literally MILLIONS of Americans have died by gun violence. Literally MILLIONS, far more than every war (including pre-1775 wars like the French and Indian war) combined.

Nothing can be done.

So, no, I don't believe you.

You're welcome.

What is your solution?

Thoughts and prayers?
More guns?
Give police tanks?
Arm teachers who are busy grooming our children?

Lean into the violence, it certainly couldn't get worse.

Or at least try a small step-Show pictures and videos of children gunned down by assault rifles, I mean really good clear high def pictures of mutilated baby corpses.

You think that is extreme? Well there is precedent.

towards the end of WW2, the western allies dragged every german they could get their hands on and made them walk through concentration camps, made them clean up the bodies, bury the thousands of dead, wash the dying camp denizens.

You know why they did that?

So, germans could not deny it happened and were forced at the barrel of a gun to see the fruits of their country's actions.

So, Americans, nut up, look in gory detail at the literal baby blood and guts spilled because some greedy ----- want to sell yuo more guns and there are way too many man childs with fantasies of grandeur.

Statistics about having guns at home
Statistically, having a gun in your home is more dangerous for you and your family, especially if you have young children or teens. A 2014 review in the Annals of Internal Medicine concluded having a firearm in the home, even when it's properly stored, doubles your risk of becoming a victim of homicide and triples the risk of suicide.

But then, you don't really think suicide should be prevented, do you, Boaz.

Sure. With muskets and bolt action rifles and shotguns and revolvers.

High powered assault-style weapons like the AR-15 are able to turn a 9-year-old's insides into hamburger, eliminating the chance of survival. They were designed to kill enemy combatants, not little kids and innocent families at parades or out shopping.

The North Carolina bathroom bill' HB2 explained
April 1, 2016
By Kaye Foley

North Carolina has been drawing national attention for new legislation that blocks cities and local governments from passing antidiscrimination measures that could protect gay and transgender people. Here's a closer look at how this law, which is seen as a major step backwards for LGBT rights, came to be.

On Feb. 22, Charlotte, N.C., passed an ordinance expanding North Carolina's antidiscrimination laws so that LGBT people would also be granted protection in places of "public accommodation" " which, among other things, would allow transgender people to use the bathrooms of the gender they identify as. This ordinance was to go in effect on April 1.

But in response, at a special session on March 23, North Carolina's General Assembly proposed and passed the House Bill 2 (HB2) " or the "bathroom bill" " and Gov. Pat McCrory signed it into law that same night.

The new law did more than repeal the Charlotte ordinance. It made the state's law on antidiscrimination " which covers race, religion, national origin, color, age, biological sex and handicaps " the final word. Meaning cities and local governments can't expand "employment" or "public accommodations" protections to others, such as on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

1) the shooter also thought about murdering strangers at a local mall so those trying to victim blame Presbyterians can shove it.

3) The shooter tried to murder cops as they arrived which explains why it took them so long to get into the school but just a few minutes to end the rampage once inside.

The Nashville music community is giving our Republican politicians the scorn they deserve for offering nothing but "thoughts & prayers" after they've any and all sensible gun control measures, for recently enacting a "no permit required" law, and another gun loosening measure in the legislative queue. Our own recently elected congressman (after a GOP gerrymander), Andy Ogles, is a gun nut whose Christmas card was a picture of his family holding assault-style weapons.

Melissa Joan Hart, the former teen star of the original Sabrina the Teenage Witch television series, was going to a parent-teacher conference at her young children's school a block away when she saw 4 and 5-year-olds running out of the woods, fleeing the shooter. I read an interesting article last night about the advent of assault-style weapons as a fetish. It made a lot of sense as it traced the origins of the explosion of assault-style weapons sales to 9/11. How the gun lobby preyed on people's fears of terrorists running the streets, etc How it appealed to the wannabe cops and soldiers pretending to "defend themselves."

My 106-year-old great aunt never felt she needed more than a shotgun behind the hallway door to protect herself on a farm a mile from a prison for the criminally insane.

All valid arguments. Here is my question: In the last 2 centuries has this country had any kind of meaningful ban on guns?
#493 | POSTED BY BELLRINGER

Yes. Georgia banned blacks from owning guns in 1833. Deadwood Dakota required the mayor's consent to fire a gun. The 1994 assault weapons ban outlawed many specific guns and magazines.

But if you are trying to imply that the (more than) two centuries of jurisprudence requiring a weapon to have a nexus to a well-regulated militia for the 2A to confer any rights would somehow not apply to some kind of gun ban, i would posit that the jurisprudence was/is unambiguous and anyone who reads the case law with an independent mind would disagree with you.

That turned out to be impractical, but not until World War I. As a technicality it still exists. It's why we have to fund the military every two years. Sitzkrieg knows all about it, he just chooses to ignore how it relates to the origins and the need for the militia.

Sure. Sadly, a distinction without a difference in light of Heller and Bruen, the latter proclaiming "The test that the Court set forth in Heller and applies today requires courts to assess whether modern firearms regulations are consistent with the Second Amendment's text and historical understanding."

and

"To determine whether a firearm regulation is consistent with the Second Amendment, Heller and McDonald point toward at least two relevant metrics: first, whether modern and historical regulations impose a comparable burden on the right of armed self-defense, and second, whether that regulatory burden is comparably justified."

Please shut them down, then re-evaluate 'gun' crime. The fact that they don't shut them down indicates that they really don't want to shut them down. They more likely want to disarm everyone in general, as have oppressive governments always. The gang crime is phrased as gun crime, and the mass shooting is phrased as White crime. Somewhere in the machine code of your brain is assembled take-guns-from-whites. Voila.

Every country has gangs. Many have more gangs than we do. Why do we have more gun violence?

Saying "we can't restrict guns until all gangs are gone" is just another way of placing an impossibly high bar that will never be reached to avoid any gun restrictions.

We've been over this. If i say "well-regulated access of a neighbor to my home, being necessary to feed my dog while i am away, the right of my neighbor to keep a key to my home, shall not be infringed," would you think i just granted my neighbor unfettered access to my home at any time for any reason? At 9:57 a.m., just minutes before the shootings, Hale's former middle school basketball teammate received a message from Hale that read, "so basically that post I made on here about you, that was basically a suicide note. I'm planning to die today. THIS IS NOT A JOKE!!! You'll probably hear about me on the news after I die," according to News Channel 5.

Hale, whose post used the name Aiden, wrote, according to News Channel 5, "This is my last goodbye. I love you. See you again in another life." The friend responded, "Audrey! You have so much more life to live. I pray God keeps and covers you." Hale responded, the station reported, "I know but I don't want to live. I'm so sorry. I'm not trying to upset you or get attention. I just need to die. I wanted to tell you first because you are the most beautiful person I've ever seen and known all my life."

The post continued, according to the outlet, "My family doesn't know what I'm about to do. One day this will make more sense. I've left more than enough evidence behind. But something bad is about to happen."
