The man stood in a red Make America Great Again baseball cap pointing his AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle toward the sidewalk. -- An elementary school student ran home crying. Parents were terrified. Neighbors called the police.

Of course they were terrified, it is somehow legal in some states to walk the streets slinging a weapon of war, how is that NOT considered an attempt at intimidation? We live in crazy f'n times, I fear for this country.

And who can blame the kids? (Except for MAGA tools, that is.) How did he expect the kids to respond? People don't realize children often think about getting shot or caught up in a mass shooting.

Gun ownership is a responsibility, whether the Constitution explicitly says so or not, because it goes without saying.

This was not being responsible.

Just because you have a constitutional right doesn't mean you should exercise it.

I see no reason to have an "open carry" law on the books, especially for long guns. There is no good reason to carry around a rifle like that and no way to easily discern the intent of the person so it is only natural for people to assume the worst.

I have been places where folks open carry a handgun in a holster and I was ok with that. There are potentially good reasons (bears, snakes, self defense) and it isn't much different than CCW except at least I know it is there. I am concerned, however, that if the person hasn't been adquately trained, an assailant may be able to disarm them and use the gun against others, but that is less likely.

AR-15 is a design by Colt. The patent is expired. If you make a weapon from that design, and your name is not Colt, it is an AR-15 style weapon.

My dominant experience with open-carry people in Texas is that they use their guns to intimidate other people. And AR-15s intimidate absolutely.

The proper response to seeing ANYONE with an AR-15 in public, and especially near kids, is to scatter and run or subdue or kill the man with the AR-15 before his trigger finger has a brain fart.
