Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Sunday, May 21, 2023

A New York Post story claiming that 20 homeless veterans had been kicked out of hotels in upstate New York to make room for migrants and was later spotlit on Fox News turned out was a lie. Without fact-checking the story or reaching out to the accused hotels for comment, Fox News' Laura Ingraham highlighted it with a chyron that read "New York City Puts Illegals Ahead of Veterans," while Republicans raged at Biden, with Nikki Haley calling it "liberal insanity at work." However, reporting by local outlet the Mid-Hudson News not only found holes in the Post's story, but what appears to be outright fraud, with homeless men telling the Hudson Valley paper they were given food and money to pose as veterans and claim they'd been displaced by migrants at the Crossroads Hotel in the town of Newburgh, New York.

The only thing worse than Fox News lying to millions is the utter stupidity of those millions that unquestioningly believe them. Every teacher who tried their best to teach the unteachables is saddened by thrir own failure which was inevitable considering the level of stupidity they were dealing with. I don't blame those teachers, you can't turn morons into thinking adults with the skills necessary to question the Fox News liars. I swear, sometimes I hear Republicans talking politics totally unaware of how stupid they sound and it just makes mr fear for the future of this country.

A typical faux outrage story, just as common coming from the left as the right.

The New York Post reporter interviewed a person he believed to be credible from past association with her charity. She was the the owner of an established non-profit for veterans, and she alone created this elaborate hoax. She provided receipts and at one point, even hired homeless people to pretend to be evicted veterans. The hotel in question refused to comment for the original story, Pete. Plenty of news stories get published every day with less due diligence from the left and the right. Once the story went viral (covered by numerous media outlets, not just "righties") The hotel broke their silence and the reporter followed up and reported the hoax. Fox and other outlets followed suit with retractions. What more do you want?

The only liar here is the woman who fabricated the whole mess. Considering her propensity to manufacture evidence, somebody should be looking into her books.

LMAO! Apparently doing the very basic of fact-checking and having more than a single source for a claim has been ignored by the right for so long that they have no idea what basic journalistic standards are. They just ran with an absurd on its face fabricated story. They RUN on confirmation bias as their operating principle. Then when caught it's "Oh we're just victims of this liar! Poor us!"

Nope, both sides aren't the same. Every situation, every news source is different. There isn't much point in arguing over which "side" is worse. What does whining, "they do it more than we do!!!" accomplish? More useless "Us vs Them" banter?

#12 Yes, you are correct. The lie was amplified by dozens of outlets, not just the right wing ones.

I'm not defending right wing media, Just saying the premise that the left wing media is any more responsible is absurd. You should read every story with a critical eye. We need to hold the media more accountable, ALL of them.

"What is it that attracts these types to Trump specifically? I believe that he, more than any other candidate on offer, represents the archetypal abusive father figure with whom many of them have a masochistic and sexually charged relationship. Having been abused himself as a child, Trump now transmits abuse to others. The Trump base, disproportionately conservative and religious fundamentalist, is also likely to have been the subject of punitive and authoritarian upbringings; rather than making a clean break with the sickness, they keep replicating it in their lives. Their slave-like loyalty to Trump is a form of masochism towards the angry yet protective family patriarch."

I'm surprised Miranda7 has a problem with this.

Being abrasive, if not actually threatening, gives them a sense of identity and attention they would otherwise lack."

It's not that "they are doing it more or better than we do"

Democrats would never take away basic human rights like a winch's right to abortion or same sex marriages or whatever better than Republicans. And they don't attempt to over throw election results more or better than Republicans do.

The democrats are not doing these things at all.

Events like Jan 6th prove the folly of the "whats the point" theory. As would all the Trumpy episodes of constitutional crisis after crisis we have had to live thru for the last 5 years if you were paying attention.

When one side supports a lie of the magnitude of the Big Lie and with the kind of repercussions we have had to face and with the importance of the upcoming election I think it's time to sit up and pay attention to who is telling the truth and consider which "side" you support.

I believe the point is not letting them get away with all the lies in pursuit of power and money and never letting us all forget that they tried.

"Did the Steele Dossier get press and you believed it? "

And how do you know what we believed?

The Steele Dossier got press because it was part of a larger story.

I believe that some of it is true and some of it is not. It became a bigger story because Republicans falsely claimed it was the basis of the FBI investigation.

It was not.

"Did the Hunter laptop Russian disinformation story spread on left wing media and you believed it?"

I am not sure what to believe regarding the Hunter laptop stories. There was no chain of custody so nothing can be proven anymore. Any theory is as good as another when there is no proof.

#29 No chain of custody? You might want to tell Hunter himself who said it was his and his attorney who emailed the shop owner himself telling him to give him Hunter's laptop. Or Hunter for suing the owner for releasing the info. But maybe Hunter is high and didn't remember right along with his attorney. What do you think? What is right in the Dossier? That Putin had a pee tape? Is that why he waited for Trump to leave office before he attacked Ukraine? Because if Trump stopped him he would show the Pee tape?

Chain of custody has nothing to do with Hunter being the owner (if he is).
It has to do with all the hands that it was transferred to and from before being used as evidence.
If the chain is broken at any point, evidence is viewed as garbage or suspect.

It's just stupid to even entertain the premise when the person trying to assert it isn't aware of what the terms mean.

#33 | Posted by YAV at 2023-05-22 02:05 PM | Reply

#33 It's even dumber to think that the reason the FBI won't release the original laptop's hard drive is because it would prove Hunter and his family's innocence. Or that the emails to and from Hunter's business partner were manufactured even though his business partner said they were genuine.
This gets me to my original point on this site.

Oh, there are going to be multiple lawsuits coming out of this little stunt:

Assemblyman Brian Maher (R-Montgomery) spent the last week claiming that 20 veterans were kicked out of a hotel to make way for an influx of migrants being brought up from NYC. On Thursday afternoon, he admitted that the whole situation was a series of lies.

Last Friday Maher teamed up with Sharon Toney-Finch of the YIT Foundation who told him that a number of veterans were being displaced as a result of arriving migrants. Together, the two began a campaign of denouncing the Crossroads Hotel in the Town of Newburgh where the veterans were allegedly staying. Toney-Finch, the director of the YIT Foundation, said she had housed 20 veterans at the Crossroads but the homeless veterans were told last Thursday night that they needed to check out on Friday. That has been denied by hotel management. Maher was steadfast in supporting Finch. Last Friday he denounced the hotel by name and used the incident, debunked by Mid-Hudson News, to attack the federal government's management of the migrant/asylum-seeker crisis. He also used the false situation to introduce legislation to prohibit the displacement of homeless veterans to make way for migrants.

There are so many pieces out there ripping Fox "news" to shreds over what they said and how easy it was to check - and how they failed even the basics.

They ramped up the hate over and over again. They used inflammatory language. They made more unfounded charges about wedding guests being kicked out. The Union Times got the names of a few "veterans" from Brian Maher (NY R Assemblyman) that met with these "veterans" and the Union Times immediately did what? CHECKED their NAMES and SPOKE to them where they immediately said they were paid to lie. You know who never bothered to do that? Fox "news" who, instead, stated repeatedly:

"Fox News has confirmed"

When they did no such thing.

This lie was promoted on Fox & Friends, Faulkner Focus, Fox News, and Laura Ingraham, for DAYS. After DAYS of reaping the benefits of stirring up all the hate, poor little laura and her minions finally had to confess "Turns out the group behind the claim made it up. We have no clue why anyone would do such a thing."

Right Laura. Why would anyone do such a thing?

We know why, Laura. It was all in the settlement between Fox News and Dominion Voting Systems. It excites your audience. It feeds the narrative. Your confirmation bias overrode all journalistic basics.

That would depend on the context. Obviously. Did you round off any numbers? Also what are you adding together? 2 atoms plus 2 atoms do not always equal 4 other atoms. Especially if you press them together under high pressures and temperatures.

But knowing your posting history I'd be highly suspicious regardless and want to check your sources and verify it with multiple other sources. Obviously.

Sure. You just happen to parrot the same talking points that come out of fox news on the same day.

If you're not getting it from fox news, then you and fox news are getting your news from the same propagandists.

I don't watch cable news.

You cite lies from right-wing propagandists all the time. Maybe you're not lying. Maybe you're just too stupid to know, after all these years of being wrong and shown to be wrong, to figure out you're being lied to. You cite National Review crap all too often.

The problem with the right-wing propagandist network is they're all in it together. It's hilarious to watch. Take this story - when it broke you could google it and see every right-wing garbage site citing it. No one else. Then other actual NEWS agencies picked it up, checked the sources, and it all blew up. This is a pattern repeated over and over and over with right-wing propagandist outlets. But you don't, you won't learn.

Election was stolen!
No.
Just tourists!
No.
No guns!
No.
Guns aren't the problem!
No.
Making abortion illegal won't hurt women.
Oh hell no.
COVID is a hoax.
No.
Getting vaccinated is harmful.
No.
Drag queens are dangerous!
No.
Teachers are indoctrinating our children to be transexuals!
No.
Teachers are teaching k-3 graders about gender and sex.
No.
on and on and on and on...

Really I should just find the one or two things the right does get correct. If that's even possible.

"Election was stolen! - I've never said that or implied it.

Just tourists! - I've never said that or implied it.

No guns!

Guns aren't the problem! - This is really a matter of opinion. A gun ban wouldn't affect me because I don't own any guns. I'm simply realistic about the fact that before a ban were to take place 2A would have to be repealed.

Making abortion illegal won't hurt women. - I think abortion needs to be legal for the first trimester and I've said so on many occasions.

COVID is a hoax. - It clearly is not a hoax.

Getting vaccinated is harmful. - I've taken 3 jabs

Drag queens are dangerous! - Not at all. Drag shows should be age appropriate. That is all.

Teachers are indoctrinating our children to be transexuals! - Anecdotal evidence clearly exists for this claim but I highly suspect these anecdotes are outliers.

Teachers are teaching k-3 graders about gender and sex. - Then why the freak out over "don't say gay"? I'd like to think that teachers aren't teaching k-3 about gender and sex but the freakout was (and remains) massive over a law that prohibits such teaching.

"Drag shows should be age appropriate."

What evidence do you have that they are not? Be specific with specific examples.

Are JonBenet's beauty pageants age appropriate?

If so they why aren't grown men dressed the same age appropriate?

See jeff this is a perfect example of why you are a trash person, why you have demonstrably zero integrity.

It has been explained to you in detail, repeatedly, how the Don't Say Gay law as written did not apply to K-3 only. Like 20 times.

In excruciating detail.

Yet here you are, once again, lying through your teeth. Do you expect us to have forgotten?

Yet you continue to ignore the real impacts this law has on people. You continue to ignore that the law wasn't explicitly expanded to K-12.

You are scum jeff, your brain is diseased. You are an amoral, unethical bag is dicks.

I don't expect an honest answer from you.

#71 No. I've said that SOME people walked through an open door (or were even waved through by capitol police) walked around and left. That is a true statement.

Others used violence to gain entry.

After K-3 the original legislation said age appropriate. Once it got expanded to 4-12 the age appropriate thing no longer is in play.

Not really.

You never said your State should have it.
You never said it should be enacted at the Federal level.
You're completely silent on the active threat in the other 49 States which only Florida has addressed.

This isn't an issue you believe in.

Jeff you're hopeless.

As has been explained to you ad nauseum, the original law extended to K-12.

In fact, the current "expansion" is simply the Fl BoE interpretation of the law. No new law was passed. the Fl BoE interprets the law so it extends to K-12.

I am sure you will rejoinder with a non-sequitur and another lie

The war on terror was sold as a war on extremist muslims and all their supporters and safe havens.

The equivalent group regarding 1/6 would be the insurrectionists including those who used violence and those that walked in walked around and walked out.

Including this woman: lawandcrime.com

see jeff, this woman is the type of person who walked in, walked around and walked out.

You see jeff, that is the problem with being a lying PoS, you have to remember all of your lies and it takes a lot of memory to remember all of the lies that you have told. In a way you are to be pitied for the struggle you face keeping track of your lies.

That problem is compounded when your philosophy is mean spirited nihilism, because your position (and the lies it fosters) is subject to change on a dime to encompass the worst of human motivations.

On policy the GOP much more aligns with my views than the Democrat Party. It's not even close. Does that mean I support ALL of their policies or ALL of the things some of them do? Of course not. I criticize them when I disagree with them or think a Republican did or said something stupid. In some cases, Trump specifically, I will just vote 3rd party.

So even when a republican attempted a fascist coup, you wont try your best to keep them out of office, you'll just throw your vote away.

Nearly your entire party is trump's delusional fascist cult now. What have dems done that is so much worse than republicans starting war based on lies or attempting to end democracy, so that it's NOT EVEN CLOSE for you? Giving poor people healthcare? Not being mean enough to trans people?
