Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Monday, May 22, 2023

The NAACP issued a formal travel advisory for Florida on Saturday, saying the state has become "hostile to Black Americans" under Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis's (R) leadership. "On a seeming quest to silence African-American voices, the Governor and the State of Florida have shown that African Americans are not welcome in the State of Florida," the travel advisory reads.

Maybe LAMBDA will issue a similar warning soon.

Perhaps they should've put that memo out earlier because there are several black events scheduled in the state of Florida over the next few months. None of which put out statements today, canceling any of them. In fact, one is happening in Jacksonville beach in June because Savannah Georgia refused to permit the event again. I am all for boycotting for what you don't believe in. I wish the NAACP much luck in this mission.

For the NAACP to single out Florida means that particular state poses a risk that is unique to other states. Where is the supporting evidence for the claim?

Should we find some conservative black Florida residents who publicly claim to love the state? Would you consider them to be experts too?

NAACPTRAVEL ADVISORY FOR THE STATE OF FLORIDA

Under its current Governor, the State of Florida has engaged in an all-out attack on Black Americans, accurate Black history, voting rights, members of the LGBTQ+ community, immigrants, women's reproductive rights ,and free speech, while simultaneously embracing a culture of fear, bullying, and intimidation by public officials. In his effort to rewrite American history to exclude the voices, contributions of African-Americans and the challenges they overcame despite the systemic racism that African-Americans have faced since first arriving in this country, Governor DeSantis has signed various controversial anti-civil rights measures into law; including the Combatting Violence, Disorder and Looting and Law Enforcement Protection Act Florida HB1,Stop Wrongs against Our Kids and Employees Act("Stop W.O.K.E. Act") Florida HB 7, Constitutional Carry Act Florida House HB 543, Florida Senate Bill 266, and Florida Senate Bill 7066.

Under the leadership of Governor Ron DeSantis, the State of Florida has criminalized protests, restricted the ability of educators to teach African-American history, and engaged in a blatant war against diversity and inclusion. On a seeming quest to silence African-American voices, the Governor and the State of Florida have shown that African-Americans are not welcome in the State of Florida.Due to this sustained, blatant, relentless and systemic attack on democracy and civil rights, the NAACP hereby issues a travel advisory to African-Americans, and other people of color regarding the hostility towards African-Americans in Florida.

Please be advised that Florida is openly hostile toward African-Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals. Before traveling to Florida, please understand that the State of Florida devalues and marginalizes the contributions of and the challenges faced by African-Americans and other minorities.

More follows naacp.org

It is advisory is accurate in what it states. Be aware of the state of Florida and the climate of hate it has fostered. Hate against African-Americans, against Jews, against Gays and Lesbians, against Transgendered, against education, against diversity, against equality, against women's rights, and more.

As a result we are seeing anti-semitic signs and projections in cities across the state. We are seeing traffic control signs being reprogrammed with "KILL ALL GAYS". We are seeing women needlessly suffering because they can't get needed medical care. We are seeing parental rights stripped away because the State knows best.

The NAACP is being generous with their advisory.

"One day blacks will shake the progressive stink off them"

And go back to those worry-free days of being considered less than a human being?

To give up all the progress blacks have made in the past 50 years that gave them the opportunity to become doctors, lawyers, judges, teachers, scientists, CEOs, governors, senators, mayors, college graduates, sports heros, whole family units and all things that made them a Democrat stronghold and thus a threat to Republican White Supremacy.

Why would you wish that on black people. You're the one that says black people should pull themselves by their own boot straps.

They're doing that and now you call it a "stink."

Would a White Supremacist President do the same?

We're looking at what appears to likely be a 12% drop in College applications for Florida Universities directly because of DeSantis and the actions of the Florida GOP.

Of those that already are enrolled in a Florida university, 5% are working on transferring out of the FL system to another state.

The biggest reason people are staying is due to economics.

I doubt that the full ramifications of accreditation (likely loss of), inaccurate histories and false narratives, an environment of hate, and the dangers of being female in Florida have really sunk in. Once it does the ---- will really hit the fan, IMHO.

One thing becomes stunningly and crystal clear: DeSantis and the GOP have lost any chance of getting the vote from college educated younger people.

Florida is one of the most popular states in the U.S. for tourists, and tourism is one of its biggest industries. More than 137.5 million tourists visited Florida last year, marking a return to pre-pandemic levels, according to Visit Florida, the state's tourism promotion agency. The NAACP's decision comes after the DeSantis' administration in January rejected the College Board's Advanced Placement African American Studies course. DeSantis and Republican lawmakers also have pressed forward with measures that ban state colleges from having programs on diversity, equity and inclusion, as well as critical race theory, and also passed the Stop WOKE Act that restricts certain race-based conversations and analysis in schools and businesses....

As an American citizen and someone that believes in equal justice for all, I am issuing a travel warning for Florida to all White Americans.

I do this because I am fed up with reading and listening to Ron DeSantis' fear-mongering and racially biased statements to the public. I cannot -- in my wildest dreams -- imagine raising a child up in Florida.

As for education, De Santis has set back the institution of learning by at least a century, or maybe more. This country has a remarkable history, albeit one fraught with racism, bigotry, and yet, a whole lot of remarkable events.

But good or bad, it is our history and we need to recognize and learn from it. Gov. DeSantis wants us to remain bigoted and racist, and that is what his presidency -- God forbid -- will give the American people. ...

At least boaz can express a justification for opposing the NAACP. You can't even do that. You can only quibble about the definition of safety. Despite the NAACP explaining the connection. I get it, you can't acknowledge the legitimacy of the NAACP position, because that would require you to defend the hate legislation being passed and that is more difficult for you to do (though you will try). So you are left with the claim that the entire position makes no sense as there is no connection between the legislation and safety.

Florida's legislative body and Governor were duly elected. Crist didn't even create a ripple in the pool.

You would have to be a moron to expect these elected officials to abandon the core reasons they ran on, and were elected on.

Saying Florida is unsafe is ridiculous and the only reason the migration to Florida even slowed down, is because as it gets more crowded, it also gets more expensive.

So, for this travel advisory to be issued Florida must have had a recent spike in hate crimes and improper police activity against black people.

That's not the standard. You just invented it. Here is what the advisory says:

Florida is openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals. Before traveling to Florida, please understand that the state of Florida devalues and marginalizes the contributions of, and the challenges faced by African Americans and other communities of color.
What portion of that do you take issue with, and why?

With all the politics and maneuvering, how is life in Florida changing for its residents?
apnews.com

... For many of those who live in Florida, recent months have brought some changes " many linked to Gov. Ron DeSantis. Here, longtime Florida-based Associated Press journalist Brendan Farrington, who has covered the state's politics since 1997, reflects on the changes for different groups and puts them into the context of the cultural and political landscape.

HOW LIFE IS CHANGING FOR ...
YOUR AVERAGE FLORIDIAN:

For your average Floridian, cost of living concerns have become an issue and really are not being addressed as vocally as most folks would have hoped.

Rents are going sky-high. Property insurance, whether you live near the coast or not, is becoming less available and less affordable.

Inflation obviously has played a role, but a lot of the discussion has been steered away from those issues affecting everyday Floridians into more of an "us against them" on cultural issues or abortion and discussions of race.

Guns are another thing. Under a new law, anyone who can legally own a gun can also carry it concealed without a permit. Now you need a permit in order to carry a gun and go through training and a background check to carry a concealed weapon. That will no longer have to happen beginning July 1.

There also seems to be an uptick in hate-related incidents. Somebody projected anti-Semitic messages on the Jacksonville Jaguars' stadium last season and there have been self-proclaimed Nazis waving flags and signs at events.

And, again, abortion. In April 2022, Florida passed a law setting a ban on abortion after 15 weeks, two months before the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, and passed a stricter one enforcing that ban after six weeks this year. It's clear reproductive rights are taking a hit in Florida.

They DON'T want it anywhere accessible from their main site. That really sums up the Republicans in Florida and their view of the LGBQT community and visitors.

They're doing that and now you call it a "stink."

speaking of Florida anti-humanity laws I present some of the nastier provisions of Florida Senate Bill 1718 www.flsenate.gov

Not permitting undocumented workers to get driver's licenses-all that will happen is more uninsured drivers will be driving on Florida roads

Invalidates out of state driver's licenses for undocumented workers-means fewer trucks will deliver goods to Florida (price increase for Florida residents) or transport Florida goods being delivered out of state-Florida goods will not be sold (lowering income to Florida producers)

Undocumented immigrants will have to tell hospitals there documentation status-fewer undocumented will seek out medical help (that is simply cruel), even though it is illegal to withhold medicaid for that purpose

A business caught using undocumented workers has to GO ON PROBATION FOR A YEAR!!!! AHHHHHH

In that case the undocumented worker has committed a felony-business owner making the $-Probation, the migrant worker working his ass off for minimum wage-FELONY

If you bring workers across state lines-FELONY

This is effective 7/1/23

We should be hearing about construction and agriculture collapses come, say September

Remember all of the complaints republican make about regulations that interfere with business? Consider that in light of Florida's anti-migrant worker law

It is always fun to watch a bunch of white guys, who more than likely live in states with Black populations under 10%, carry on about Black issues. Boycotting states with large Black populations to "help" the NAACP cause. Ask yourself honestly, How many Black people live on your street? How many Black people are in your family? How many Black people did you interact with today? Hmmmm, not enough to make you experts.

At least Snoofy is honest with himself when he says

At least Snoofy is honest with himself when he says "Blacks need whites to progress.

And that's the fascinating thing about this new strain of pseudo-intellectualism promulgated in lock-step by the typical White Progressive Dumbass.

They've essentially conceded the point that the black folks are too intrinsically stupid, hedonistic and undisciplined to exist within a civilized society. They're literally conceding that point to the most vicious, Jim Crow-era racists of the Old South.

That said, the White Progressive Dumbass sees the only solution as utterly destroying the civilized society and remaking into something that accommodates the lowest common denominator of humanity.

Truth, you are aware that the NAACP is not the official spokesperson for Black People, right? Most of the groups that make themselves the mouthpieces of the community are more interested in the needs of their organization than the needs of the people they claim to represent.

The NAACP has 300,000 members. That is less than 1% of the Black population.

Laura,
Assuming you were being sincere, I should say that while my queer friends joke that I am non binary, I don't truly self identify as such. As a child, I never had interest in "girl" toys and all of my hobbies and interests and jobs are those that generally only interest boys and men. I prefer unisex/men's clothing for comfort reasons and don't wear jewelry or makeup but I have in the past.

I was brought up in an environment where gender roles were not limiting and have never felt discomfort or dysphoria, so I suppose that means I'm probably just a tomboy cis girl. I can't imagine what it must be like to experience gender dysphoria and I respect the experiences of others and always seek to understand better.

So Miranda7 I have a question for you.

Doesn't it seem like almost every woman you've encountered through your work in criminal justice and social services was injured to some degree because she did not grow up with that freedom, and instead found themselves in "traditional" subservient female roles, to really awful men?

This is why I don't get why you're so supportive of maintaining the gender roles and the status quo and not allowing people the freedom to determine those things for themselves.

Not having what you had harms people. You've seen it your whole career. But it doesn't seem like you want people to have it. Am I missing something, or seeing something very differently?

"Doesn't it seem like almost every woman you've encountered through your work in criminal justice and social services was injured to some degree because she did not grow up with that freedom, and instead found themselves in "traditional" subservient female roles, to really awful men?"

No. Not almost every woman. Not even most. Definitely some. Like the woman I found hiding in a neighbors bushes nude. Her husband took all her clothes to keep her from leaving the house. When he left, he locked up his clothes and anything else she could cover herself with. No sheets, not even a dish towel. Six months she lived like this, too ashamed to be seen. Finally she made a break for it while he was at work and I was called.

"This is why I don't get why you're so supportive of maintaining the gender roles and the status quo and not allowing people the freedom to determine those things for themselves."

I'm not, that is one of your straw men.

"Not having what you had harms people. You've seen it your whole career. But it doesn't seem like you want people to have it. Am I missing something, or seeing something very differently?"

Yes, you are missing a whole lot. Most of the posts you direct at me make incorrect assumptions about my beliefs or actions, or ascribe beliefs to me that I do not hold. For example, earlier in this thread you assumed I vote Republican, and you build a pile of strawman arguments on that false assumption.

Cheers for the NAACP! As Florida's Tea Party retread leadership steadily reverses social liberties and steps up its making new rules to disenfranchise its citizens of color or progressive political or pro-choice leanings.

www.loc.gov

The US Library of Congress maintains copies of possibly every annual issue of the above-linked, "Motorist's Green-Book", a Traveler's Guide to Safer Road Trips.

That series of books probably protected the lives of 1,000s of BIPOC vacationers during Jim Crow. NAACP response to Florida's creeping disenfranchisement of its BIPOC citizens and visitors is appropriate. It is also a tribute to the exceptional efforts of those who painstakingly researched the Green Book over the years to make travel safer for others.

Stacey Abrams got Blacks to turn Georgia Blue.
A similar thing happened with Native American voters.

So it's not that Blacks are too stupid and too lazy to vote.

This was alluded to earlier when LftHndThrds assumed I was talking about a black man, not him, when I asked "Felony conviction."

Nope, you have now spent an ENTIRE YEAR misquoting my views about abortion. You unrelentingly resurrected threads from months back pulling remarks completely out of context and paraphrasing them to say something pretty much opposite from what I said. You change my words to manufacture an opponent to suit your warped, twisted view of what you would have LIKED for me to say. That is what you do best. Spew absolute vulgar toxicity just to piss people off. It is a game for you. It is a shame, because you appear to be an intelligent person with some interesting insights.

I finally quit talking about abortion because I realized there was no point discussing it with people like you who really don't care at all about the women who are suffering because of new state laws. I was very clear that I did NOT support the new laws. I was also clear that it was not okay for doctors to use the new laws as an excuse to let women with life threatening pregnancy complications die, rather than perform abortions that fit EASILY within exceptions making their abortions legal. You were clear that you thought they should let these women die, rather than risk their careers for potentially violating a law that clearly gave exceptions for medical necessity. That is cowardice. It is a year later since the thread you won't let go. You could relink it but you cares.

Why don't you tell us about all the women who have died since then because their doctors refused to perform abortions. The ones you predicted would "bleed out on the operating table". I really don't know how many women died, if any did, but I can tell you that if a woman died as the result of a doctor refusing to perform an abortion in a situation where her life was in danger, in a state with clear exceptions provided for medical necessity, the doctor in question shares some accountabililty for that outcome. If you recall, that is the part you had a problem with.

I'm not going to continue this discussion with you. You are back on ignore.

Miranda7 was adamant that women that were having problematic pregnancies, life threatening pregnancies, or pregnancies where the fetus would be born and quick die or was severely damaged could get abortions without any issue or pushback. Miranda was adamant that it was the doctors that were at fault for being scared to do the procedures, simply because they faced 100K fines and life in prison.

Has that changed given all the news on women in red state after red state being denied medical treatment?

I don't know. You'd have to ask her.

You are, quite pointedly, dismissing the impact of the laws you say you don't support.

Saying "Come on, these laws aren't so bad!" isn't an act of resistance.

It is an act of acquiescence.

Yeah. She said the doctors and hospitals were in the wrong, that they could do those abortions, and they were being cowards by not doing them.

Otherwise known as victim blaming. The health care system is being blamed for being the victim of the Republican legislature. Women aren't even in that equation. And nevermind that it's only because of Republican laws that anything changed to begin with.

She's basically taken Boaz's "Guns have nothing to do with gun violence" meme and evolved it to "Republican anti abortion laws have nothing to do with women being denied abortion."

It's priggishness of the highest order.

Yav, There is a difference between saying "Come on, these laws aren't so bad" and saying "That is not what the law says at all." That is what I generally do, call out misinformation and hyperbole, particularly when the misinformation itself can cause harm. Spreading lies and disinformation about a law isn't resistance, and correcting them isn't aquiesence. For example, termination of ectopic pregnancy is always life threatening and is covered as an exception in every state. I raised objections to the widespread disinformation in the media (and on the DR) that women would die, or doctors would be imprisoned for terminating ectopic pregancies. That type of disinformation itself could actually CAUSE death, if women wait to seek care. In fact there was a story about a woman who was allegedly denied care (over the phone) for an ectopic pregnancy who traveled 10+ hours to another state for a legal abortion. ( I say allegedly because parts of her story were implausible) Certainly the new law created the situation, but the misinformation perpetuated by false news reports and rumors, the reckless over the phone diagnosis led to the woman delaying care to travel unnecessarily. If the ectopic pregnancy had ruptured while she was in the middle of the desert, leading to her death, would the hospital who ignorantly denied her life saving care share accountability? Or would you give them a free pass as a form of "resistance"?

It is not "resistance" for a doctor to refuse care and risk a woman's life out of "an abundance of caution". It is not "aquiesence" to seek legal clarification and work within the confines of a law you don't have the power to immediately change. The exceptions vary from state to state, but if the medical need for abortion is real, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to write a set of medical notes sufficient to overcome criminal prosecution. None of the legislation appears intended to incarcerate doctors acting in good faith, and indeed, none have been prosecuted.

As to my question, "Why don't you tell us about all the women who have died since then because their doctors refused to perform abortions." This was referenced back to the claims on that thread that "Women are literally bleeding out on the operating table", presumably because doctors were afraid to risk their careers to save their lives. I said if that occurred, those doctors were cowards, and I stand by that statement. A year has gone by and as far as I know, no women have died as a result of an abortion being denied. No doctors have been arrested for performing abortions. Court challenges are underway in many states. That is the way to effect real change, with facts and sound legal arguments, not fear and hysteria.

Certainly there have been some bad outcomes as demonstrated by the current Texas lawsuits. There's another thread on that so I'll stop here

So that's your threshold for when these laws impact women.
When these laws kill women.

The woman who was forced to give birth to a baby with no kidneys that died in her arms moments later suffered no significant injury or injustice, according to you.

Are you one of the ones who thinks you did that woman a favor, by forcing her to give birth and letting her hold her doomed baby for a few moments?

You are on the wrong side when it comes to freedom. You are on the side of acquiescence and compliance as women lose their reproductive freedom including women who actually want kids being impacted by anti-abortion religious zealots whose primary goal is to control wonem.

"It is not "resistance" for a doctor to refuse care and risk a woman's life out of "an abundance of caution".

You just said doctors are helping women by refusing to perform abortions.

And you wonder why nobody here thinks you support a woman's right to choose...

"The exceptions vary from state to state, but if the medical need for abortion is real, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to write a set of medical notes sufficient to overcome criminal prosecution."

Let's see some of these notes.
Since you're sure they exist.

You are lying.
You have no evidence or knowledge these medical notes exist.

You are lying.

"The entire medical world is wrong, but you are right."

Can you please show me where, how I said that? Nope you will slither away because I didn't. Just more straw, so predictable, Yav. Just like SNoofy, who just made up a whole bunch more stuff I didn't say. I'm sorry you too are so lonely and desperate for a fight you have to create imaginary opponents.

I suppose I need to add some context for the village idiot.
In the specific cases I was referring to, where a woman's life is in danger (for example ectopic pregnancy)
It is not "resistance" for a doctor to refuse care and risk a woman's life out of "an abundance of caution".
It is MALPRACTICE

No.

It's not "malpractice" when a doctor doesn't commit felonies.

The legislature inserted themselves into the doctor patient relationship.

Give the Republican Legislatures the credit they deserve. Without Republican Legislatures, these women wouldn't be denied needed medical care.

The legislature, not the doctor or the patient, is the reason doctors can't provide the care their patients want.

"The entire medical world is wrong, but you are right."

"Can you please show me where, how I said that?"

Right here:

"It is not "resistance" for a doctor to refuse care and risk a woman's life out of "an abundance of caution".
It is MALPRACTICE"

You are blaming the medical professionals, not the laws, for not doing abortions.
The medical professionals say they can't do these abortions.
You say the medical professionals are lying.

That's where you're right, and everyone else is wrong.

Like I said, pure priggishness.

If a medical professional says they cannot intervene in the case of an ectopic pregnancy, then yes, they are LYING. And if they refuse to terminate the ectopic pregnancy and she dies, they will be liable for malpractice, and possibly even criminal negligent manslaughter.

Yav, can you please identify what specifically I said that is factualky incorrect? Nope, you can't, because I speak facts, not --------. You are the one spreading the --------. You haven't given a single actual, specific response
Refuting a single thing I've said. That proves I speak the truth. You just can't handle the truth.
