More from the cited article...

... The Miami Herald reports that the poem, which is titled "The Hills We Climb," was removed from the K-5 curriculum in the county after local parent Daily Salinas challenged it as inappropriate for students....

Salinas tells the Miami Herald that she's not in favor of censorship but she instead wants students to "know the truth" about Cuba with accurate reading materials....

Know the truth, or her alternate-universe version of the truth?

And the objection of one parent, just one parent, can cause censorship?

The older I get, the more lost America seems to be. Maybe every aging generation feels that way. But I do believe that the Millennial Generation is the hope for the future, and the sooner we actually turn the levers of power over to them the better it will be. Old, entrenched Seniors suck.

I didn't see any mention of the age of Salinas so why do you just assume that she is a boomer or that all boomers think alike. I think most of us oppose censorship and oppose Deathsantis and his efforts to push his ideolofical agenda, I think he is a closet Nazi just like Trump. Joe Biden is older than either of those two haters but we don't see him pushing a right wing agenda or wanting censorship. Ageism is just as unfair as any other prejudice.

The needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many. Sounds almost totalitarian when you think about it.

What great truth is she so intent on people knowing about Cuba?

A truth so important that her whim is given more weight than everyone else's first amendment rights.

Would Florida jettison everyone's second amendment rights for one person?

Why is the second amendment always considered the most "special" by so many?

Why is the first so ignored by the same type of people?

Our media are such complete trash. This poem did NOT get banned. It was reviewed and deemed more appropriate for Middle School than Elemenary school. The only mainstream outlet to accurately report this is CNN. This poem is accessible in middle school libraries in this district.

It happens a lot less to me than it does to conservative media consumers like you. Conservative media EXISTS to lie to people. Ailes created fox news because he thought he could have saved Nixon's presidency if he had a news network to lie to the country about nixon's crimes, so he created one, and used it to save the next nixon.

"I'm not saying I agree with the decision." This has become your daily cop out to let yourself off the hook for the actions of the party that you refuse to stop supporting even after they attempted a fascist coup.

Therefore, it was Banned from elementary schools.

Not sure why you feel the need to defend everything republicans do. But that's why you're a cultist.

You're an unthinking idiot who approves of literally anything they do.

If tomorrow they decide it's not appropriate for middle schools, you'll be fine with that, and if the next day it's decided not appropriate for K-12, you'll accept it as the truth.

Same as you have with the "Don't say Gay" legislation.

What's the objection to the poem?

Why does it need a different section?

I heard her read it out loud on Biden's Inauguration Day.

There wasn't anything even slightly objectionable about it.

I'm curious if you've heard or read it, and if so, what your opinion is as to why it's inappropriate for elementary students.

When day comes we ask ourselves,

where can we find light in this never-ending shade?

The loss we carry,

a sea we must wade

We've braved the belly of the beast

We've learned that quiet isn't always peace

And the norms and notions

of what just is

Isn't always just-ice

And yet the dawn is ours

before we knew it

Somehow we do it

Somehow we've weathered and witnessed

a nation that isn't broken

but simply unfinished

We the successors of a country and a time

Where a skinny Black girl

descended from slaves and raised by a single mother

can dream of becoming president

only to find herself reciting for one

And yes we are far from polished

far from pristine

but that doesn't mean we are

striving to form a union that is perfect

We are striving to forge a union with purpose

To compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters and

conditions of man

And so we lift our gazes not to what stands between us

but what stands before us

We close the divide because we know, to put our future first,

we must first put our differences aside

We lay down our arms

so we can reach out our arms

to one another

We seek harm to none and harmony for all

Let the globe, if nothing else, say this is true:

That even as we grieved, we grew

That even as we hurt, we hoped

That even as we tired, we tried

That we'll forever be tied together, victorious

Not because we will never again know defeat

but because we will never again sow division

Scripture tells us to envision

that everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree

And no one shall make them afraid

If we're to live up to our own time

Then victory won't lie in the blade

But in all the bridges we've made

That is the promise to glade

The hill we climb

If only we dare

It's because being American is more than a pride we inherit,

it's the past we step into

and how we repair it

#32 | Posted by truthhurts at 2023-05-24 06:33 PM | Reply

We've seen a force that would shatter our nation

rather than share it

Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy

And this effort very nearly succeeded

But while democracy can be periodically delayed

it can never be permanently defeated

In this truth

in this faith we trust

For while we have our eyes on the future

history has its eyes on us

This is the era of just redemption

We feared at its inception

We did not feel prepared to be the heirs

of such a terrifying hour

but within it we found the power

to author a new chapter

To offer hope and laughter to ourselves

So while once we asked,

how could we possibly prevail over catastrophe?

Now we assert

How could catastrophe possibly prevail over us?

We will not march back to what was

but move to what shall be

A country that is bruised but whole,

benevolent but bold,

fierce and free

We will not be turned around

or interrupted by intimidation

because we know our inaction and inertia

will be the inheritance of the next generation

Our blunders become their burdens

But one thing is certain:

If we merge mercy with might,

and might with right,

then love becomes our legacy

and change our children's birthright

So let us leave behind a country

better than the one we were left with

Every breath from my bronze-pounded chest,

we will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one

We will rise from the gold-limbed hills of the west,

we will rise from the windswept northeast

where our forefathers first realized revolution

We will rise from the lake-rimmed cities of the midwestern states,

we will rise from the sunbaked south

We will rebuild, reconcile and recover

and every known nook of our nation and

every corner called our country,

our people diverse and beautiful will emerge,

battered and beautiful

When day comes we step out of the shade,

aflame and unafraid

The new dawn blooms as we free it

For there is always light,

if only we're brave enough to see it

If only we're brave enough to be it

Yeah, 99% of the people upset about it couldn't articulate why if you pressed them, but it doesn't matter. It's not about them, it's about all the people that could get that subtlety and be inspired by it. For me personally though, those themes were part of what made the poem great. Complaining that a poem that is inspirational and brilliant, written by 22 year old, was banned from K-5 curriculum because one pathetic, wretched, dumb as dirt, wacko MAGAt whined and complained. The same poem that was read by the author at Obama's inauguration on National TV to everyone in the United States and beyond.

Do you feel stupid now?

One more point: There is a single man in Clay County, FL that has gotten 360 books banned and has a list of 3,600 he wants banned. He's a f**king nutjob, but HE is determining what EVERYONE can read in schools. HIM. His name is Bruce Friedman.

Oddly, when I was taught about plurals of Latin word ending in "um," I was taught the proper plural representation of those words.

Maybe i should thank the New York City public school system for teaching me that, so that I do not have to rely on an incorrect "spell-check" as an excuse for my ignorance.

Please explain...

What does curriculum have to do with moving a K-5 book to a library for 6-8 graders because one magat complained?

@#83 ... What does curriculum have to do with moving a K-5 book to a library for 6-8 graders because one magat complained? ...

Good question.

Are the educational curricula in Florida so fragile that they can change so quickly upon the whims of a single person?

"please explain what you know about curricula that is not understood here."

Typically, different curriculums for different levels do not have identical material. So if something is in the K-5 library but not the middle school library, does that mean it's "banned" from the middle school library?

Choosing not to include something in a particular curriculum is not the same thing as "banning" it. By that logic, algebra is banned in elementary schools all over the country.

Not really.

If algebra had been allowed in elementary schools, then one single person complained about algebra being allowed in elementary schools, resulting in algebra no longer being taught in elementary schools, yes, that would be banning.

But the case you present does more to confirm what you are arguing against.

It does little to substantiate your view.

The "logic" your post asserts fails miserably.

Wrong.

3 of the 4 books are designed for K-3 and the 4th book is designed for 4-6 grades. the poem doesn't have an age attached.

They moved these books from the age-appropriate library to a library where they are far below the grade level that will be interested in them.

The school is preventing the age-appropriate children access to the material, thus banning the elementary students from accessing elementary school level books.

Hey look the lying PoS is once again downplaying the negative impacts of republican hate policies.

Hey -------------, you do realize this is a symptom of the larger problem emerging in Fl, right? Teachers afraid to teach ----, books being stripped from libraries, libraries being emptied, teachers being "investigated" for showing a disney cartoon, you know, all of the ongoing efforts to instill fear in teachers and schools.

to the detriment of the children you care so much for.

When you can't defend you downplay, when you can't downplay you deflect. You're a broken record stuck on cult.

The silence is because, I'd like to think, they know how utterly ridiculous

I don't agree. They a silent because of a few reasons. First it was a Biden inauguration speech, second her poem talked about a woman who came from slaves could become president, third she is black and fourth it is a book that they will never read.

Poems like these are banned because it hurts their fee fees that the ugly history of America includes a time when people were owned, raped, tortured and killed with impunity solely because the color of their skin was dark. They believe to this day that being a lighter shade of melanin makes them superior to these people. To suggest that any one of them is smarter than they are enrages them. They don't see how banning a thought or a book with a thought that all people are created equal is really enforcing just how inferior they are.

In all of recorded history the people who have banned thoughts, words and books have never been the good guys.

The older I get, the more lost America seems to be.

The intolerant minority has found a champion in the GQP that will give into their intolerance because they see it as a way to power. The GQP created this monster when it stood firmly behind this mob when it came to the inconvenience of wearing a piece of cloth during the COVID pandemic. Now the monster is demanding more and more appeasement.

Here's some on Salinas, who made this complaint:

"Just over a year later, Salinas attended another rally organized by the Proud Boys in support of Christoper Morzon, a far-right extremist nicknamed the "Cuban Confederate." At the protest in November, 2022, Salinas can be seen wearing a Ron DeSantis T-shirt and hat."

Morzon went on to march in Charlottesville.

Behind every crazy idea stands a proud MagaTurd.
