US voters blame Republicans and Democrats equally for the standoff over the debt ceiling, a series of new polls shows, sending a mixed message to President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy as they try to leverage public opinion to their sides in the negotiations.

More from the article...

... A Monmouth poll released Wednesday showed 51% of Americans want the debt ceiling issue to be dealt with separately from the debate over spending cuts -- a so-called "clean" increase. Just 25% say a debt-limit increase should be tied to negotiations over a package of spending cuts demanded by House Republicans.

That contrasts with a CNN poll Tuesday that found 60% believe Congress "should only raise the debt ceiling if it cuts spending at the same time."

"This appears to be a case of the old adage: Question wording matters most when people know the least,'" said Monmouth pollster Patrick Murray.

"Most Americans don't have a strong opinion on the debt ceiling " and won't have one unless there's a default that impacts them. Beyond that, partisan identity will drive who gets blamed for any unhappiness coming out of a deal," Murray said. ...

The Republican Part has decided that this is a win-win:

1) Biden doesn't cave, the economy is in ruins, and he gets the blame.

2) Biden does cave, the economy is in ruins, and he gets the blame.

"US voters blame Republicans and Democrats equally for the standoff over the debt ceiling"

Which serves to demonstrate just how misinformed or uninformed most US voters actually are.

You know the democrats are going to cater to their base and compromise here.

And, as everyone knows, their base is centrist op-ed writers from sea to shining sea.

What's to negotiate?

Never negotiate under threat or blackmail and never negotiate with terrorists.

I am ready. Good luck to us!

I think compromise is the wrong word for Democrats. Compromise would imply that both sides are getting something of substance.

The proper term for what Democrats do is:
capitulate
verb
cease to resist an opponent or an unwelcome demand; surrender.

Republicans raised it THREE TIMES during Trump's presidency.

The one that increased the national debt - accumulated by the U.S. since George Washington - by 25%.

In the middle of what the GOP called "a roaring economy." The one Trump inherited from Obama, who left the GOP an annual deficit cut from $1.4 trillion in Bush's last budget to $500 billion. The deficit Trump ran back up to the stratosphere.

Republicans now seek to defund the IRS' ability to audit high wage earners and corporations. Ya, slashing taxes doesn't life all boats. It doesn't trickle down. It goes in the pockets of those who don't need the money and has resulted in our national debt going through the roof instead of being erased per Bill Clinton's plan to have it paid off in the 2000's.

@#11 ... Defaulting on the debt is the best path for republicans to win in 2024 so umm yeah they will let default happen ...

If we default on the debt, the American Dollar as the currency of excellence around the world wil lbe diminished. That is why I wonder why Republicans seems to almost favor a default...

U.S. debt default to challenge, or enhance, dollar as safe haven: analysts (May 17, 2023)
asia.nikkei.com

... The U.S. may be only a few weeks away from defaulting on its debt over political gridlock, thrusting the global financial system into unknown territory that threatens to pummel stock prices and ignite a run on banks.

But views are mixed as to whether this would be a major blow for the dollar -- which has served as the world's major reserve currency since World War II -- or counterintuitively further enhance its safe-haven status as money flocks toward stable investments.

"On a very essential level, this is a threat to global stability and U.S. dollar dominance," said Juan Perez, director of trading for Monex USA, in an interview.

Although for now the market does not seem to expect the U.S. to default, Perez said it could be a possible "Brexit moment" for the world's biggest economy.

"How much political friction do you have in your country that you're preventing yourself from borrowing from yourself?" he asked.

A default on U.S. debt would likely be welcomed by China and Russia, which have been pushing for a "de-dollarization" to free themselves from a global financial system reliant on the greenback and decision-making in Washington. ...

So, so that is why Republicans seem to be so non-chalet about a possible default....

While I don't disagree with a lot of the attitudes on this:

I don't have a problem with Biden being the adult in the room.

To put it another way:
The Captain must go down with the ship.

As a hedge against that, he can't just ignore the crew who are trying to scuttle it.

OK, so I ask in #20 for evidence of your assertion, "But he won't, because he has to represent his constituents. And [his] constituents are centrist op-ed writers."

And what I see in response is...

"Is there anyone else in the country who wants him to compromise on this more than centrist op-ed writers? "

and

"I can't think of anyone who wants him to compromise other than centrist op-ed writers. "

So, for starters, you admit that you have no evidence to back up your assertion.

That aside...

"...I can't think of anyone who..."

So you think your thought patterns represent this Country?

Wow.

OK, that deserves a:

Which base are you talking about? House progressives have opposed any concessions, warning about a lack of support for it. Where do you find that Dem voters want concessions to the Republicans?

"A clear majority (65%) of Democrats say the debt ceiling should be handled on its own."

Your contention is that op-ed writers are running the show with zero proof.

Easily disproved by any number of progressive columnists who have argued against capitulation.

They should, but they wont. The GOP
has to do the bidding of their corporate
masters and take more from the poor and
the middle class, in their efforts to
make America a living hell. Which is
ultimately stupid, for the kids aren't dumb,
and will likely flee Dumbmerica over the
next couple of decades, for more friendly
work environments, like Europe, Canada, and elsewhere...
