Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis kicked off his presidential campaign formally on Wednesday, in an unconventional way: by hosting a Twitter Spaces event with tech billionaire Elon Musk.

Well, for starters, I do applaud Gov DeSantis for opting to use a most unconventional means to announce his candidacy.

Kudo to him for that.

OK, more to the political reality....

For such an important political event, Gov DeSantis failed. Miserably.

The build-up to the event. And the apparent failure of the event.

Wow.

You cannot ask for a worse occurrence for the start of your campaign for President of this great Country.

I mean, Gov DeSantis has shown that he cannot even plan a simple political event.

And he wants to be President.

The God ordained fighter & Republican savior Ron DeSantis interviewed live by the billionaire & self-declared genius Elon Musk, what could possibly go wrong? Oh, wait. . . #DeSaster

Yeah.

The first problem I see is having Mr Musk in an unscripted political event.

I mean, is Gov DeSantis that clueless?

Is this Gov DeSantis this evening?

DeSantis is promoting what he calls our "Great American Comeback" aka GAC. Will GAC Republicans replace MAGA Republicans? Ack, beware the GAC! It sounds like something a cat does to get rid of a nasty hairball.

Come back from where, to where?

"@#5 ... "Great American Comeback" ..."

It's his way of saying Make America Great Again without using those words. Folks are calling tonight's screw up the Ron & Elon Clown (or ------) show. BTW, it's starting to look like Everything Musk Touches Dies (EMTD).

Excellent take by Josh Marshall, who gives Ron credit where it is do:

Meatball Ron's Sad Discord Chat

One way to summarize the conversation was that about 50% of it was various guests saying Elon Musk is totally awesome; the other 40% was DeSantis saying DeSantis is totally awesome. I'm budgeting 10% for times the connection crashed.

Yeah, my view is that Gov DeSantis blew it, big time.

He was upstaged by Mr Musk.

But candidate DeSantis should have been aware of that going into this event.

But he did not seem to be aware.

That is a major concern.

Is Gov DeSantis that clueless?

It was brilliant of Democrats to stage this because they desperately want Lewzer to be the GOP nominee.

It was never about DeSantis.

It was always about Musk.

DeSantis was dumb enough to go along with it.

And it blew up in both their faces.

"I mean, is Gov DeSantis that clueless?"

He's not clueless. DeSantis sold his soul. He needs money and Elon Musk has the money, lots of it, even if DeSantis does have to dance like a marionette to get it.

One good thing did come out of this botched announcement. Now we know who's REALLY going to be running the country if DeSantis gets elected.

This 2024 election season is going to be Elon Musk's revenge on Trump and don't spare the horses. Money is no object.

"Is Gov DeSantis that clueless?"

There have been broad hints here and again that DeSantis isn't really all that bright.

No hindrance to him being the Republican nominee, of course.

No sane Democrat wants Trump to be the GOP nominee AGAIN.

Putting that treacherous fool that close to power for any reason again is madness.

No sane Democrat wants Trump to be the GOP nominee AGAIN.

Neither do sane Republicans, but they are a rarity these days. They are pretty much stuck with him.

#22 | Posted by REDIAL at 2023-05-26 10:52 AM | Reply

I'd prefer that the Republicans find someone who is both sane and honest but that wouldn't fit their authoritarian agenda.

So far, DeSantis is as close to a mini-Trump who has stepped up and he's no great shakes either. Twitter followers are his best bet.

Enter Elon Musk.

While i generally agree with this, unfortunately i don't see a scenario whete DeSantis is any less dangerous. If anything he'd probably spend a lot less time grifting and golfing, and accomplish even more regressive policies than Trump did.

On the plus side, i think DeSantis is potentially too creepy and wooden to win an election, and his decision to launch with a wooden creep like Musk didnt help him.

Desantis chose musk because he wanted to suck up to a rich guy and thought that rich = competent. Disaster ensued.

This has been a preview of how a desantis presidency would work.

#28 | Posted by SpeakSoftly at 2023-05-26 02:32 PM | Reply

28 I'm not sure that was the angle. Musk has spent the last year or two explicitly courting the extremely online side of the right. DeSantis saw this as an opportunity to ingratiate himself with those folks. I'm not sure how much value there really was in doing so as most of those people probably already like DeSantis, and it opens DeSantis up to easy attack ads every time Musk does something stupid/sociopathic in the next 18 months.

Then my point still stands- desantis is making reckless choices resulting in disasters. That is his leadership style. As it has been in florida, and as it would be in the white house.

Musk and sacks will each contribute $50 million.
