Unfortunately, as those who watch the local NYC each evening know, a person pushed into an oncoming subway train occurs more frequently than anyone would like.
My rough estimate would be two or three times a year.
Now if I ride the subways, I stand in the center of the platform until the subway comes to a full stop...

It's an unfortunate situation.
Based on the following article, the man was homeless, most likely he's mentally ill.

Subway Platform Barriers Will Be Tested at 3 N.Y.C. Stations (February 2022) www.nytimes.com
...The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which had resisted calls to add platform barriers, will begin a pilot program amid outcry over safety in the transit system. For years, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority had resisted calls to install the platform barriers that are used in subway systems around the globe to block access to tracks, citing the "special complexities" of bringing such technology to a more than century-old system not designed for it. But on Wednesday, more than a month after a woman was shoved to her death in front of a train at the Times Square subway station, transit officials reversed course and said they would move to test such barriers. While the pilot program will be limited to three stations, it does include some platforms at the Times Square station, one of the system's busiest stops, and officials say it could lay the foundation for an eventual expansion elsewhere. More than one-fourth of the system's stations have layouts that could eventually accommodate platform barriers, according to an analysis commissioned by the M.T.A., which operates the subway....

More madness from liberals politicians (empowered by their constituents) who think they are helping mentally ill by letting them rampage the streets and prey on the public. No lefties, you not helping mentally ill people, many who are homeless simply because they are not functional enough to maintain an apartment, e.g., budgeting for rent, grocery shopping, etc. They can't do it. They need help from society to provide the basic necessities, not the "freedom" to -------- on sidewalks, wear filthy, torn clothing, and never bath their bodies.

"They need help from society to provide the basic necessities"
Cities lost that help "from society" aka the Federal Government under Reagan.
I'm pretty sure you know that.

That's your problem right there.
"Society" isnt the federal government. In this case, it's NY local. Why cant NY scrounge up enough money to pay for it's mentally ill? Why does local NY City/NY state need to bum off the federal government for it's local citizens?
Why should the federal government, which gets money from ALL states be on the hook for a local NY problem?
Oh yea, the money pot is bigger in the federal system.
Progressives, always looking for free money.

Huh? Why are you pretending New York is the only beneficiary of helpful programs? And why is this the ONE time you don't start by saying "It's their money to begin with"?
New York pays A LOT more in federal taxes than North Carolina. Why shouldn't a proportional amount be returned in social programs of their citizens' choice?

You're missing the point.
I'll put it in terms you can understand.
Without the Federal Government protection you ----------- wouldn't have a society.
