Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The Texas Rangers are leading the majors with 6.4 runs a game and second in team OPS at 118. One of the surprising sources of that massive production is a player they acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals for "cash considerations" three years ago: 30-year-old Cuban outfielder Adolis Garcia. "He has the bat speed and muscle to pulverize the league's nastiest pitches, as he proved last week when he became the first hitter to go deep off Atlanta Braves flamethrower Spencer Strider twice in one game," writes Yahoo Sports sabermetrician Zach Crizer.

There are wars going on. People are leaving south America because of conflict. Nah, let's talk about bats. Put your head in a hole.

Sometimes sports is a pleasant diversion and a way of burning off energy competitively but not destructively. And baseball has its own parallels to life.

George Will was an old fashioned "conservative" journalist and widely syndicated columnist. He loved the comforting repetitive rhythm of the sport of professional baseball. At one point, Yale Professor Donald Kagan (a neo-conservative historian) called Will "democratically modern" because Will cited baseball's equal accessibility to aristocrats and to the masses as particularly virtuous. Will replied pointedly: "I have been called many things, but rarely, if ever, democrat or modern. This mudslinging must cease."

My favorite quote of George Will is regarding his LEAST favorite sport:

"Football combines two of the worst things in American life. It is violence punctuated by committee meetings.

"It's May. For chrissakes."

In their defense, it might be the only month they have!

Legalize it. I want to see Barry Bonds hr mark fall. Aaron Judge 100 HR's in a season and on his final one he swings so hard that he tears every ligament in this body.

I must be getting old. For some reason I misread the title and thought this was about unexplained swarms of bats showing up in Texas. I thought it was a climate change article or something like that.

Not surprising. Other than the Asterisks there's really no baseball in Texas.
