Since we're on the topic I can't think of a single intellectual in the ancient world that was an atheist. Aristotle Plato Archimedes none of them were atheists.

And they could never use those "words" to admit any doubt as to the Bible's veracity or risk being burned at the stake.

Italian scientist Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake for teaching, among other heretical ideas, Copernicus' heliocentric view of the Universe. But what really got him into trouble was his belief in "many worlds". That was heresy.

And the penalty for heresy was being burned at the stake.

So you can probably imagine why no one would ever admit being an atheist in writing if the penalty for heresy was death.
