Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

David French: If you watched the first Republican debate last week or if you've listened to more than five minutes of Vivek Ramaswamy's commentary, you'll immediately note that he is exceptionally articulate but also woefully ignorant, or feigning ignorance, about public affairs. Despite his confident delivery, a great deal of what he says makes no sense whatsoever.

Take his response to the question of whether Mike Pence did the right thing when he certified the presidential election on Jan. 6, 2021. Ramaswamy claims that in exchange for certification, he would have pushed for a new federal law to mandate single-day voting, paper ballots and voter identification. Hang on. Who would write the bill? How would it pass a Democratic House and a practically tied Senate? Who would be president during the intervening weeks or months?

It's a crazy, illegal, unworkable idea on every level. But that kind of fantastical thinking is par for the course for Ramaswamy. This year, for instance, he told Don Lemon on CNN, "Black people secured their freedoms after the Civil War - it is a historical fact, Don, just study it - only after their Second Amendment rights were secured."

Wait. What?

While there are certainly Black Americans who used weapons to defend themselves in isolated instances, the movement that finally ended Jim Crow rested on a philosophy of nonviolence, not the exercise of Second Amendment rights. The notion is utterly absurd. If anything, armed Black protesters such as the Black Panthers triggered cries for stronger gun control laws, not looser ones. Indeed, there is such a long record of racist gun laws that it's far more accurate to say that Black Americans secured greater freedom in spite of a racist Second Amendment consensus, not because of gun rights.

When key members of the political class abandon any pretense of knowledge or truth, a poorly informed public is simply unequipped to hold them to account. A democracy needs an informed public and a basically honest political class. It can muddle through without one or the other, but when it loses both, the democratic experiment is in peril.

Ramalama is a ding dong, go figure....

Ramaswami-Havna-Gud-Time-Vishnu-Vareer is just playing dumb to reach the GOP base.

If he actually believed the words that come out of his mouth, he would be walking proof that not all Asians are smart. Kind of like how Ben Carson showed us that not all doctors are geniuses.

He thinks that if NATO agreed to permanently reject Ukraine as a member so that yhen we could take Putin's word that he would agree to give up his war and the goal of annexing Ukraine as part of Russia. Naive at best and I think NATO would tell him he is crazy if he thinks they would even consider that. But he talks as if it is a real, viable plan though I think President Zelensky would tell him he's crazy too.

Just start asking for his birth certificate. And keep asking. And keep at it, no matter what he produces...

Just another fascist, saying fascist stuff.

As much as we need to stop electing old white men, we also need to stop electing oligarchs. Government should not be run like a business. It should be run like a government.

"Despite his confident delivery, a great deal of what he says makes no sense whatsoever."

That describes literally every Republican here.

Ramaswami made his money through various pump and dump schemes, where the people who believed his hype lost millions and he managed to cash out just before the crash.

The guy has never had substance, just a bunch of hyped up bull ----.

His presidency would be no different.

But the Trumpers love him because he blabs out a bunch of trigger words that when taken as a whole statement don't make sense. It's perfect for the Trumped up zombies out there.

The trouble is, these days, anyone who can blab out a bunch of trigger words has a shot at the presidency, thanks to the idiocy of our populace.

Not the best type of people to be leading our Democracy. Basically snake-oil-salesman types. But that's every Republican POTUS since after Eisenhower.

"But the Trumpers love him" ... because he said Trumpy was the best President in a hundred years.

And that's why Trumpy loves him too.

It's as simple as that.

His platform is if/when Trumpy dies then I am your man!

Well, for me, there was the moment he said that global warming was a hoax. Told me everything I needed to know about him, he is willing to compromise his intelligence and truth telling to suck up to the most ignorant of the Trump gang.
