Many Americans may be confused about the fact that theirs is a liberal democracy because the Latin-origin word "liberal" has itself been bent out of shape in the U.S. Somehow it has come to mean leftist. That, is about as rare a definition of the word as the use of the Imperial system of measurement. And like the use of inches and ounces, it is basically just plain wrong. It becomes increasingly absurd once you notice that today's far left in the U.S., at least when it comes to free speech, is about as liberal as Mussolini. Liberalism stands for freedoms, just as it sounds. Britain's John Locke, one of the fathers of liberal thought, argued that individuals possess natural rights, including the rights to life, liberty, and property, and that even when not granted by governments they are inherent to human beings. He called for a "social contract" between the government and the people, to ensure the respect for and promotion of those rights.

It could happen in France and elsewhere in Europe too. Israel is teetering on the brink. And that brings us to the United States.

You could say the people didn't quite know who they were voting for in 2016, but now we know. About half the voters in 2020 still backed Donald Trump, and next year they might do so again.

There is no way Trump can be seen as a liberal democrat. He clearly projects no fidelity to Locke's theories. He will not only happily take away abortion and other freedoms, but he also cares nothing about any social contract. Certainly not one that provides citizens with a baseline of health care and protection from gun massacres. If you ignore his efforts to overturn the 2020 election (as well as the strange outcomes of the Electoral College), you might say Trump's democracy is, just like Netanyahu's, about no more than majority"or dishonest minority"rule.

Freedom without Democracy is Anarchy.

I have faith in you to figure it out.

He can self-identify as one like Tosserigelmainkebars.

... Liberalism stands for freedoms, ...

My unabridged dictionary has the following as the entomology of the word "liberal"

...
1325-75; Middle English (from Latin): of freedom, befitting the free
...

"woke" no longer means what it used to mean.

Ditto for "conservative."

In Europe, the term "liberal" generally refers to what USans would call a conservative. US "liberal" would be referred to as social democrats.

I think a lot of US Dems would actually be considered "liberals" in Europe, as many favor both economic and social freedom.

I also think a lot of "conservatives" would be labelled as "democratic socialists."

Especially the Trumpers.

Possibly.

I tend to avoid such attempts to define the words, and go more with how they seem to be currently used.

Especially the words seem to be more of some vaguely-defined label nowadays, a label that many who use the word could not define what they mean by it.

For example, the GOP and the word "woke."

'Woke' is to conservatives what 'fascist' is to progressives.

A term intended to ensure that the desired audience, progressive or conservative, dismisses it entirely instead of maybe actually thinking about it.

In a Democracy not everyone gets what they want.

I see on this site people claiming they aren't really "free" unless they get everything they want.

Personally, I have observed this perceived lack of freedom more from the left than the right.

The right has a slightly different definition of "freedom" than the left so they aren't believing they lack freedom.

The left thinks they should get everything their heart desires and you're a fascist if you don't give it to them.

'Woke' is to conservatives what 'fascist' is to progressives.

Let us know when the "woke" storm the Capitol buildings in several states and in DC.

Let us know when the "woke" start passing laws to strip people of their civil rights.

Let us know when the "woke" start writing laws to disenfranchise voters.

Let us know when the "woke" suggest changing the voting age to 25.

You know who wants "woke" and "fascist" to mean the same thing?

Fascists who want to obfuscate and muddy the water so their actions won't be considered as extreme.

Also. Much to lamplighter's point. "Woke" is a meaningless boogeyman. Fascism has taken over the Republican Party.

you're a fascist if you don't give it to them.

No Bill.

You don't simply get to ignore the actions of the Republican Party actively trying to destroy our democracy.

Good effort though.
