Michelle Goldberg: Because How Democracies Die was prescient about how Donald Trump would try to rule, I was surprised to learn, in Levitsky and Ziblatt's new book, "Tyranny of the Minority," that they were shocked by Jan. 6. Though they've studied violent insurrections all over the world, they write in this new book, "we never imagined we'd see them here. Nor did we ever imagine that one of America's two major parties would turn away from democracy in the 21st century."

What astonished them the most, Levitsky told me in an interview last week, "was the speed and the degree to which the Republican Party Trumpized." In "How Democracies Die," he and Ziblatt had reproved Republicans for failing to stop Trump's rise to power. But at the time, he said, "we didn't consider or call the Republican Party an authoritarian party. We did not expect it to transform so quickly and so thoroughly."

All liberal democracies have some countermajoritarian institutions to stop popular passions from running roughshod over minority rights. But as "Tyranny of the Minority" shows, our system is unique in the way it empowers a minority ideological faction at the expense of everyone else. And while conservatives like to pretend that their structural advantages arise from the judicious wisdom of the founders, Levitsky and Ziblatt demonstrate how many of the least democratic aspects of American governance are the result of accident, contingency and, not least, capitulation to the slaveholding South.

Just another reminder of how the remnants of slavery will continue to impact American society until all its dregs and century-lasting poisonous anti-democratic tentacles of systemic white supremacy are permanently relegated to the dustbin of history.

It can't happen soon enough.

Yeah, Republicans had us fooled foe decades.

This is what greed, willful ignorance, power hungriness and hurt fee-fees get you----It strips you of your American identity.

Most Republicans are no more Americans than Putin is.

Oh come on.

Republicans have been openly authoritarian since 9/11.

Where's the backwoods moron to tell us we don't live in a democracy?

I was thinking the very same thing. The Unitary Executive Theory was the functional genesis point IMO, and Cheney did a damn fine job of implementing it with his actions on 9/11 and subsequently as we invaded Iraq based on lies and misinformation.

"Nor did we ever imagine that one of America's two major parties would turn away from democracy in the 21st century."

It's very sad. Trump only cares about one thing only: himself.

You righties ought to think about that. He doesn't care about you, your family, or anything that isn't him.

I was ready the entire first year of the Trump Administration for there to be Street battles Nationwide.

I didn't anticipate Trump goose stepping on his own dick the whole time.

With a forward by Eberly discussing Roe v Wade.

Biden, otoh, loves you and cares about you.

#7 | Posted by looshfarmer

As a matter of fact, he does. He's been a strong advocate for average Americans his entire career.

Trump? He couldn't care less about you. Hell, he's spent and continues to spend millions in small campaign donations rubes sent him on himself.

Maybe he does.

I can tell by the policies he has pushed, he cares about rebuilding America from the bottom up while Donny fail only cares about himself.

I'd take Biden any day over the fascist that tried to steal 81,000,000 Americans vote, extorted an ally to make up lies about Biden, saluted a North Korean general, insulted our European allies, stole boxes of classified documents, lied and covered it up when caught and sucked Putins dick on live TV.

Headline fail, shouldn't it be "underestimated "?

#12 | Posted by TFDNihilist at 2023-09-13 07:42 AM | Reply

shouldn't it be "underestimated "?

No, because the authors were thinking in the affirmative, ie., that Republicans actually cared about protecting and preserving our constitutional democracy the way they've always claimed through the years.

So in this context, "overestimated" would be correct.

Venezuela is a prime example how and why a 'democracy' can die.

Trumpism is a better and more relevant example.

Historically that's too short sighted. The Unitary Executive is a product of nuclear weapons and 30 minutes to annihilation.
